A fun set of matchbooks made by the Ohio Match Company showing days of the week set in different typefaces. Monday is set in ATF Stencil, Tuesday is set in ITC Grouch, Wednesday is set in Buxom, Thursday is set in Egyptienne Bold Extended, Friday is set in Futura Prisma by Photo Lettering, Saturday is set in Futura Black, and Sunday is set in Gill Kayo.

“The Ohio Match Company was established in 1895 and was the second oldest operating match manufacturer in the United States. Originally, as with all of the early match manufacturers, Ohio made only wooden matches. Later, with the advent of book matches, Ohio began its journey to become one of the true giants of the industry. Located in Wadsworth, OH, its plant was the largest in the world, producing more than 300 million wooden and paper matches each day. The facility covered 18 acres. Also, in 1938, it was the first in the industry to regularly produce reverse-strikers.”

Hi Records, 1972

The debut album of Otis Clay (1942–2016) from 1972 combines big green type with a photograph by William Cantrell. The swashy letterforms are from West Behemoth Italic — possibly with some customizations like shortened ascenders of h or l, for a tighter setting. The glyphs included in this sample demonstrate how close the knockoff Stymie Black Italic (or Flair) is to Dave West’s design. The differences here are mainly in the counters of e or v. Also, the copy didn’t include a y with diagonal as shown here.

The cover was designed by Farmlett, Barsanti & Wood Inc., a design firm founded in 1966 by Tony Barsanti (1931–2018) and Harry Farmlett (1932–2016). Located in Manhattan on 208 Fifth Ave., it wasn’t too far away from the Photo-Lettering office on 216 E 45th St.

Series of movie posters for Klute (1971, awarded a best actress Oscar for Jane Fonda) with different designs, most of them using Burko (Gurpo) for movie title and cast.

Klute is a 1971 American neo-noir crime-thriller film directed and produced by Alan J. Pakula, written by Andy and Dave Lewis, and starring Jane Fonda, Donald Sutherland, Charles Cioffi, and Roy Scheider. It tells the story of a high-priced prostitute who assists a detective in solving a missing person case.

A software retailer ad in Byte magazine, January 1985. The ‘S’ in Harlow Solid was was modified for clarity, letter connections were made, and a fresh balloonish highlight was applied.

Beautifully nostalgic series of record covers for three EPs — Glowing in The Darkest Night, Making Up a Changing Mind, Spilling Over Every Side; all 2010) — by American electronic artist Pretty Lights, illustrated and designed by Dan McPharlin. 

The records show heavy ’80s psychedelic rock influences with a touch of Moebius and Heavy Metal. Beautiful.
