The fine drawings and paintings by Stanley Roy Badmin (1906–1989) have rather come to epitomise “England’s landscapes” and he was exceptional gifted when it came to the illustration of natural scenes and trees in particular. His work encompassed paintings, commissioned works for adverts and posters, as well as illustrations for many books. This is a particularly luscious example of his art from a 1952 book of “Famous Trees” by Richard St Barbe Baker and published by the private Dropmore Press. The frontispiece is of the Panshanger Oak in Hertfordshire that still stands with a girth of 7.6m and was recorded as being a fine tree as far back as 1789 by Gilbert White. It stood in the grounds of Panshanger House that was demolished soon after this sketch (between 1952 and 1954) and the grounds are now used for gravel extraction.

Survival Is a Style, Christian Wiman’s first collection of new poems in six years, may be his best book yet. His many readers will recognize the musical and formal variety, the voice that can be tender and funny, credibly mystical and savagely skeptical. But there are many new notes in this collection as well, including a moving elegy to the poet’s father, sharp observations and distillations of modern American life, and rangy poems that merge and juxtapose different modes of speech and thought. The cumulative effect is extraordinary. Reading Survival Is a Style, one has the sense one is encountering work that will become a permanent part of American literature.

Art & Design: Myunghee Kwon

Identity for Les Nuits de Saint-Sauveur, a small French music festival for family and music lovers. I developed an identity which is understandable for a large public, that evokes the feeling of a sunny countryside landscape. The poster is inspired by a monument of the city, an old tower called ‘La Tour Sarrasine’. I made a symbol of it to settle the festival in the local culture.

I picked Belgika 8th to fit the illustration style, assisted by Aperçu for body copy.

Cook-In was conceived by Kathleen Dunning Fisher for her “two girls, Suzanne and Vicki”. Cover design and illustrations by Loretta Trezzo. Published by David White Inc., New York City, January 1969.

The title appear to be custom drawn, loosely modeled after Seymour Chwast’s Art Tone (1964). The author’s name in bottom-heavy caps with contour represents an early use of Photo-Letterings’s Village Stocked a.k.a. Psychedelitype 5785 (1968).

Studio Noel were commissioned by Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew to design the book Get Plants. How to bring green into your life by author Katherine Price. The book was aimed to encourage a wider audience into introducing plants into their homes and was divided into four sections drawing upon Kew's scientific and horticultural knowledge.

The bold, expressive Noe Display was used for chapter openers, contrasted by the sans serif Akkurat for pull out quotes and the reference section.

Etnohaus is where art takes place. People meet, make music, exchange opinions.
A creative center for projects and spaces in Rio. They invited us to enter the house, so that we could arrange the things that were going on there.

Our role was convey the whole essence of Etnohaus in design. We made a logo that says a lot about how they see each other: through a circle, in a place with no hierarchy. Where everything and everyone unites through music, respecting the personality of each other. Where everyone is welcome.

From there on, we selected colors that could express these fine personalities, a typographic selection that communicated everything they were talking about, and putting it all together in a system that would be easy to replicate on the communication platforms they use.

Printing house Joon (“a line” in Estonian) specialises in personalised printing services and special solutions. Their new identity, developed by AKU using GT Walsheim, leaves a lot of room for though – clean, striped surfaces inspire to write down new ideas and make them happen.

Three colours refer to the main business areas. The simple system adapts well to various applications and stands clearly out amongst competition.

Park is a bar, restaurant and distillery located in the Canadian resort town of Banff, within the Banff National Park, and the province of Alberta. It is a region of diverse natural beauty which includes mountains, prairies, forests and desert badlands, and that attracts walkers, campers and skiers locally and internationally.
