Product catalog for Expormim, a leading European company specialized in indoor and outdoor rattan furniture. The design of the publication is based on simplicity, order and detail, both in the use of typography as well as in the system of physically structuring and ordering the content.

Neutral is used throughout. (The Expormim logo is based on ITC Officina Sans.)

Roscoe, the corporate magazine for the Canadian Association of General Surgeons (CAGS), was published twice (fall 2017, fall 2018). This post shows spreads from the first edition, launched to coincide with the organization’s 40th anniversary at the Canadian Surgery Forum, September 2017.

Positioned somewhere between a coffee table book and a magazine, Roscoe is an annual publication written entirely by surgeons. With a niche international audience, the publication explores issues related to the profession with authentic stories from a unique perspective. As with it’s namesake — Roscoe Reid Graham — the publication is bold, thoughtful and relevant.

Most typography is set in Lyon and ABC Favorit, with some headlines et in Druk. Small print like page information is set in Space Mono.

Eighth issue of Die Epilog, a German magazine that deals with the change of our society. By looking into the small things that are changing in our everday lives, it wants to explore and welcome the bigger shift around us.

Nothing is certain except! We are surrounded by tutorials that show us how we structure our lives, achieve goals as effectively as possible, and even suggest that only losers are haphazard. As long as we have a goal in mind, we have our lives under control. However, this planning fanaticism in our microcosms is counteracted by the suspicion that there is absolute lack of planning at the macro level. Nothing but distraction maneuvers? Epilog No. 8 raises its head from the flow of stress, trying to get an overview needed for the big biographical and political situations.

The extended version of Moderat is used largely for headlines as correspondence to this issue’s topic “Great plans”. It’s contrasted by the edgy Serifbabe and its alternate version.

The Future of Typography is a magazine series that presents nine interviews with designers and draws a conclusion in the tenth magazine issue. In her bachelor thesis in Communication Design at Folkwang University of the Arts, Essen (Germany), designer Josephine Becker researched how our handling of typography​ has changed as a result of digitalisation, and how we will we with writing in the future. Her interview partners include Niklaus Troxler, Julia Kahl of Slanted, Grilli Type, Studio Dumbar, Hansje van Halem and Götz Gramlich.

The main typeface is Cera Pro in a customized version: Interview partners TypeMates interpolated Cera to create a weight named “Ticken Schmaler” (“A nudge more condensed”), sitting between Cera with its circular o and the more compact Cera Condensed. The outcome is a slightly more space saving typeface for Josephine’s layout with some quite narrow columns. Cera Ticken Schmaler is paired with Blacker which is used mostly for quotes.

While the regular Cera has a 100% circular o and Cera Condensed has an o that is only 70% rounded, this custom version of Cera has a width of 95% compared to the regular Cera.

Westerly is a literary magazine that has been produced at the University of Western Australia since 1956. It currently publishes two issues a year, releasing its first online special issues in 2016. The journal maintains a specific focus on the Australian and Asian regions, but has published literary and cultural content from international authors. The magazine publishes fiction, poetry, cultural, autobiographic, and scholarly essays, and interviews.

Since the 2016 redesign, all typography uses Laski Slab. From the Chil3 website:

The brief: Refresh the design for well-loved 60-year-old literary magazine.
The solution: A new typeface to reduce the word count and e-pub versions bring the magazine up-to-date.

This publication was developed after a briefing by Maria Fernanda Antunes for the discipline of Editorial Design at ESE Coimbra. The output should be a magazine in Portuguese; it should include a barcode, a price, a title and existing (magazine) articles of different dimensions; and publicity. It was also demanded for us to choose between areas of study such as cinema, music, illustration, photography, etc. We settled on a magazine about photography, and restricted its scope to erudit photography.

Back in 1826, Joseph Nicéphore Niépce exposed a plate of tin to the sunlight during eight hours, obtaining what may be considered the first photograph of the world. Homaging the creator of the photographic era, Niépce is now the name of this publication.

The magazine aims to to offer a pleasant reading experience, and to perpetuate formats of photo-albums that may fall into disuse – in this case we reused old “catalog bags” photo-albums. On opening the album (10x15cm), the bags show the photographs, that in turn hide the articles.

For the typography we chose Courier for photographers’ names and biographies, the familiar Adobe Garamond for body copy, and Arial for main titles and some highlights. A careful typographic hierarchy was made for obtaining the best balance between economic use of space and readability, and to create a sufficiently distinct-but-not distracting layout.

As it was demanded to use a barcode, we fully embraced it and assumed it as a main element in the cover. It was also demanded that the magazine included price information so, despite this being not a commercial project, we included a price on the back cover.

All the photographs are followed by a sticker with a respective label. That is not only important because it gives information about the images (title, author, date), but because it slightly covers them.

An observer that is really interested in seeing the whole photograph must remove it from the bag. By doing that, articles about the photographer as well as them biography will show up behind the photos, turning the observers into potential readers.

We chose to include publicity (also demanded) in camouflaged way, by making it to appear in the form of an article, only marked with a discrete “sponsored” side by its author. In this case, it is an article referring to an exhibition.

Playful, informed, eclectic, and thoughtful, it encourages the discovery and intelligent appreciation of cannabis through creative and inclusive explorations of art, culture, and fashion.

Every issue of Broccoli magazine uses a new trippy treatment for the logo (based on Tiempos).

For the exhibition Make-up. Shaped for Life? at the Museum der Kulturen Basel, Büro Fax created a magazine called Haut-nah.

German agency Releit und Junker publishes the oversized and monothematic Über Magazin. It features creatives and artists from various disciplines. The eighth issue focusses on the topic of “hours” and uses Miller and Cera as temporary typefaces. The next issue will have a new art direction and new typefaces …

The Cumquat is a space initiated by Jordan Heng and Patrick Honan to explore creative projects through the loose constraints of sexuality, smut & love. It is also published as a zine.
