The want driving this project was to represent both sides surrounding the debate around consciousness; ensuring each viewpoint was represented equally. However, purely visualizing their debate was not enough. By allowing an audience to actually engage in the discussions, they can come to their own conclusions through critical thinking. From this problem identification, the design solution of debate cards developed. This document, illusion: what will you talk about? cataloged a debate by philosopher Mary Midgley and scientist, Colin Blakemore.

Four large ‘zine’ style publications each reflect a lobe of the brain. Debate cards were visually colour coded to fit into larger publications, which would let a reader investigate the topic more. This ensured the cards and the publications could each stand-alone, but together work efficiently to gather the information quickly. The size of the zines and the cards are based on research as to the average size of the brain.

On the larger publications, the debate is presented as one continuous thought, meant to act like this whole disagreement is in the head of the reader. The debate cards allow for other individuals to participate and the main content works in another way when more people are involved.

The addition of kinograms, which is a paper animation technique was added to create another dimension. Kinograms erase and change the type below using acetate and thin lines. This tied conceptually with the debate, reflecting how our brains consist of grey and white matter. The hope is that this solution could be used for other large debates on important human issues.

GT Sectra and Maison Neue were chosen to portray the debates for various reasons. GT Sectra is a contemporary serif typeface combining the calligraphy of the broad nib pen with the sharpness of the scalpel knife. It was originally designed for use in the long-form journalism magazine Reportagen. Reportagen is a beautiful visual combination of two worlds, journalism and magazines. Symbolically, this is reflected in the typeface. It was the best choice for the project as it could represent both a typed letterform and a handcrafted one. The use of book in the body copy and the use of display for the debate cards ensured that the conventional choices and interpretations of the type designer could be respected.

Maison Neue is the reworked version of Milieu Grotesque’s Maison typeface family. While the original version was constructed on geometric principles, Maison Neue has been meticulously redrawn with a stronger focus on optical criteria to create a distinct grotesque—paying particular attention to harmony, rhythm and flow. Maison Neue was chosen for it's harmony with GT Sectra, but also its dual-layered creation. It works well at smaller sizes within the documents and as marginalia.

It was awarded membership into the International Society of Typographic Designers and exhibited in TU Dublin end of year show.

When we think of masks, we think of carnival, African tribal rites or death masks, theatre and fashion, but also role-playing, wrapping and protection. Masks are among the oldest and most controversial objects in human cultural history. Contemporary artists are not only interested in the mask as an object, but also in its social, cultural and political significance and this book traces the mask in contemporary art.

Atelier Pol designed the exhibition catalogue in close collaboration with the Aargauer Kunsthaus. With rich visual material and short texts on the exhibited works, the volume shows the artists' respective approaches to the broad thematic field of the mask. Two introductory essays additionally shed light on the topicality of the mask and its prehistory in art.

Headlines use Founders Grotesk, all other text is set in Inter and Messina Serif.

In the visual identity for Yoko Ono’s latest exhibition Growing Freedom at the Phi Centre, Principal’s concept-driven designs are exemplified. “We wanted to focus on the fact that Yoko’s show was based on participation and interaction,” says [Bryan-K. Lamonde,] co-founder [of Principal]. Translating these movement-based concepts through the identity’s interlocking typography, the designers decided not to use any images of Yoko’s work, instead, evoking the artist’s performative work through the humanist letterforms. Keeping the levels of information to a minimum to further highlight the typographic identity, the studio draws out the emotional connection between Yoko’s work and the city of Montreal; one of the locations for her seminal work, Bed-ins for Peace that took place in the sixties.

All graphic material surrounding the exhibition — poster, signage, catalog, tote bag – has been consistently designed with the pair Suisse Works and Suisse Int’l. While looking minimalist the logotype is actually a complex nesting of the first and last name of the artist, the later being set in an outlined version of Suisse Works.

Suisse Works & Suisse Int’l are part of the Suisse family, available from Swiss Typefaces.

On the new website of inyourface you can watch the two copy writers Laura and Maria text live. Together with our technical partner Roman Schmid we designed a website where they can record text snippets in real time in the custom built backend. The animations are then being played back (and looped if wanted) as real – and search-engine-friendly – text on the main page.

With this tool inyourface can design their website along the defined grid. The genuine text sizes and the customisable layout are optimised for a perfect representation on all devices.

To mirror their unique positioning and prestigious reputation in the sustainable investment space, we paired an uppercase sans serif (Maison Neue) with a distinctive, modern serif (Noe Display and Noe Text) to strike a balance between traditional and contemporary.

Etxeberria takes its name from the Basque Country in Spain and France meaning ‘the new house’. We worked alongside renowned chef Javier Carmona to capture the spirit of a new house situated among the hills of the rural village where the food finds its origins.

With an identity centred around the theme of intersecting ideas, we created a brand style which was applied across a weekly-changing menu, social media imagery, and a simple one-page website.
