Time Without Pity is a 1957 British film noir thriller film directed by Joseph Losey and starring Michael Redgrave, Ann Todd, Leo McKern, Paul Daneman, Peter Cushing, Alec McCowen and Renee Houston. It is about a father trying to save his son from execution for murder.

The film was directed by Losey after he was blacklisted in the U.S. during the McCarthy era. It was his second film in Britain and his first under his own name.

The screenplay was written by fellow blacklisted writer Ben Barzman and adapted from the 1953 play Someone Waiting by Emlyn Williams.

The title card features lettering based on Imre Reiner’s Matura (1938), with a cursive initial T from Matura’s Scriptorial Capitals (series 528). The W was made a tad narrower than in the original.

Style frames from the Criterion Channel’s 2025 Miami Neo Noir film collection. The collection featured the films Body Heat, Out of Sight, Miami Blues, Wild Things, Bully, China Moon, and Miami Vice.

Each month the Criterion Channel releases a handful of curated collections. Each collection getting some stylized typographic treatments used for a teaser trailer and style frames (thumbnails) for the collection as a whole plus a few select films within the collection.

The Miami Neo Noir collection is styled with the look of glowing neon signage paired with a thick, angular script and a quirky, geometric sans-serif.

The featured, glowing pink neon-like font is Piccadilly, from ITC, originally a typeface drawn for Letraset in 1973. It’s a neon-like rendition of Broadway, which features in the Miami Vice logo.

The accompanying script is Agneya from Seventh Imperium.

And the sans-serif type used to list films in the collection on the main title image and the director’s names on the individual film images is ITC Kabel.

Dark City is a 1998 neo-noir science fiction film directed by Alex Proyas and starring Rufus Sewell, William Hurt, Kiefer Sutherland, Jennifer Connelly, Richard O'Brien, and Ian Richardson. The screenplay was written by Proyas, Lem Dobbs, and David S. Goyer. In the film, Sewell plays an amnesiac man who, finding himself suspected of murder, attempts to discover his true identity and clear his name while on the run from the police and a mysterious group known as the “Strangers”.

The cover art for the DVD and Blu-ray packaging of the 2008 director’s cut of Dark City, which seemingly reuses the typographic setup employed for the Warner Bros. 2005 DVD release of Batman: The Motion Picture Anthology 1989–1997. The film’s title is set in SpikerSerif with additional text set in Alexon.

The 1973 film The Long Goodbye opens cruising through the streets of Los Angeles and closes with a salute to the 1949 film The Third Man. Both title sequences are set in Blippo Bold (see also Burko). Motion graphics studio Momoco designed this opening for a noir detective series from Hans Rosenfeldt, writer of the critically-acclaimed The Bridge. The typeface, Time In Hell (a mix of Times and Helvetica), is one of many sans/serif mutants of the 1990s. It’s interesting to see this hybrid style make a comeback several decades later in these titles, and 2019’s Parasite movie poster and trailer.
