Mono Mind – yet another side project of Per Gessle – have released one album and seven singles. They all feature designs that follow almost a cookie-cutter template, with coarsely halftoned images of the band characters on random backgrounds in bright colours. The band's name has always been set in David Kerkhoff’s Dirrrty, with the release title in Bureau Grot Medium Compressed. The sole exception to this is the album which has its title set in Akzidenz-Grotesk Extended. From the third single onwards, the single titles have been mechanically skewed 15° to create a faux italic.

Encantado is the new album by Brazilian singer-songwriter Silva. We were invited to develop its identity and a homonymous publication that is the tactile soul of the album, bringing together details of his creative process.

“Forever Young” by the group Interactive is an anthem of happy hardcore and trance. The sound is based on a sample of Alphaville’s “Forever Young”. Interactive has defined hardcore and electronic music in the early 1990s, with several big hits like this one.

The cover is rather direct and not very subtle visualization of the idea of eternal youth, with the head of a baby shown big. The style of this cover is representative of the hardcore and trance covers of the 1990s. An aesthetic to which studios like I-D Büro and M-Design Wormerveer contributed a lot. While M-Design Wormerveer focused on illustration and drawings in many of its designs, I-D Büro is more at home with the technique of collage. But bright colors, collage effects, beveling, colorful and abstract backgrounds are always present in the works of both studios. In this example we see a lot of photo effects, which are essential for the saturated aesthetics of early 1990s hardcore covers.

The typography is crucial, too. OCR-A – a comon choice in electronic music – is used for the name of the group, with an outline between the panel that contains it and the title itself. The song title below is in Bank Gothic.

It’s not the first time that Interactive used OCR-A in their iconography: every time I-D Büro was involved in the design of their covers, we find this logo, see e.g. “Tell Me When” and “Touché”, both from 1995. On the back cover, the tracklist also is in OCR-A, and the credits in Bank Gothic.

Earth Rich was painted with a well-used and slightly dry brush—some might call it seasoned. The result is a zesty all-caps type, deep in flavor and variety.

Earth Rich is paired with various sans serifs, including one that’s similar to Kapra Neue. The BIGS logotype appears to be custom drawn.

Renata is from Minas Gerais, and Alexandre from Curitiba. The two share a love for literature, travelling, and the arts. Their wedding, a simple yet elegant ceremony in the countryside of Minas Gerais, reflects the couple’s personality.

Guimarães Rosa, also from Minas Gerais, is one of the couple’s favourite author. In many of his books, the writer collaborated with Poty Lazzarotto, an artist from Curitiba. Their partnership, know as a perfect combination of form and content, was the main inspiration behind the invitation.

Representing both interests of the couple and the nature of the cerimony, the illustrations were drawn in reference to Poty’s wood engraving style. Using both screen printing and hot foil stamping, the printing processes were chosen in order to balance with the roughness of the illustrations. The floral pattern (inspired by their favorite painting, Van Gogh’s Sunflowers) was chosen by the same reason.

Chiavettieri proved itself ideal for the task. While the sharp cuts of its italics matched the illustration style, its book text look was suitable for the couple’s literature background, and its low contrast and generous x-height guaranteed the typeface’s legibility through all different sizes and printing processes.

Issued on the occasion of the (West) German federal election on March 6, 1983. Die Grünen (“The Greens”) reached 5.6 per cent of the votes and were represented for the first time in the Bundestag, the German parliament.

The font used on the iconic sunflower poster is Frankfurter, with the smaller type (“ökologisch · sozial · basisdemokratisch · gewaltfrei”) in the lighter Medium weight, the only member of the family to include a lowercase.
