Churchward Design in use on the Dutch sleeve for ABBA’s “I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do”, the third single to be released from the Swedish pop group’s self-titled 1975 studio album. This pressing has “So Long” as the B-side, which had previously been released as the album’s first single.

Ring Ring by Björn Benny & Agnetha Frida, released on 26 March 1973 on Polar Records, Sweden. The cover was designed by Peter Wiking, with photography by Bengt H. Malmqvist and a tightly spaced version of Gill Sans Extra Bold with enlarged dots. The ampersand appears to be a custom addition.

Ring Ring was ABBA’s first album, released in 1973. I will share the fonts used for this album and the related singles. In this early period the band didn’t identify as ABBA yet. Instead, the covers spell out the names of the four members: Björn & Benny with Agnetha & Anni-Frid. In many cases, the women’s names are given as “Anna & Fri(e)da”. “Björn” often has to do without a trema on the o.

“People Need Love” (1972) was the first ever single released by ABBA. The “Ring Ring” single was released worldwide. “Nina, Pretty Ballerina” was only released in France and Austria. That single gained a #8 in the Austrian charts.

Under a rainbow-coloured band name set in Stack, ABBA look happy in white while sending out an S.O.S. on this single cover for the Swiss/German market. Stack is accompanied by a seemingly random duo of popular heavyweights at the time, Kabel Black and Antique Olive Nord.

Arrival was first released in Sweden on October 11, 1976.

News Gothic is the main typeface used on the artwork for the albums and singles by Swedish pop group ABBA from 1976 to 1982. It is also the typeface used for the iconic logo with the backwards B. According to Wikipedia, it was –

[…] designed by Rune Soderqvist, who had designed ABBA’s record sleeves. The logo first appeared on the French compilation album, Golden Double Album, released in May, and would henceforth be used for all official releases.

But the idea for the official logo was made by the German photographer Wolfgang Heilemann on a “Dancing Queen” shoot for the teenage magazine Bravo. On the photo, the ABBA members held a giant initial letter of his/her name. After the pictures were made, Heilemann found out that one of the men held his letter backwards as in ᗅᗺᗷᗅ. They discussed it and the members of ABBA liked it.

For the albums Ring Ring, Waterloo, and ABBA, different fonts were used.

The first appearance of the ABBA logo was on the French Golden Double Album ‎(Melba, Vogue, May 1976). The secondary typeface is Windsor Elongated in all caps.

On 31 March 2017, the groundbreaking book ABBA – The Complete Recording Sessions was published in a completely revised and expanded edition. This new edition features many more details on exactly how ABBA wrote and recorded all the music they created during their decade together.

ABBA – The Complete Recording Sessions by Carl Magnus Palm was first published in 1994, at a time when ABBA were still a long way from being the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame inductees they are today. Based on original research and interviews with all four ABBA members, as well as the key people who worked with them in the recording studio, the book was the first attempt at taking a serious look at the group’s music.

In the past two decades, more information about the group’s music has emerged, and the author has also spent hundreds of hours on additional research. These findings have now been incorporated into the new edition of ABBA – The Complete Recording Sessions. The book has been rewritten from the ground up and features more than three times as much text as the original volume.

Designer Maria Nicholas set the entire book in Questa and Questa Sans with just one notable exception: the word “ABBA” on the cover, set in News Gothic Bold as a nod to the group's trademarked version with reversed “B” developed in 1976.

The book was self-published by the author through a successful crowdfunding effort and is now making its way into the hands of ABBA and pop music fans around the globe.
