<p>[Songwriter/guitarist <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_Kemp">Gary Kemp</a>] was competing for [<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Altered_Images">Altered Images</a> lead singer <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clare_Grogan">Clare Grogan</a>’s] attention with Altered Images cover artist David Band and asked him to work with Spandau Ballet on the design for the new album. Because they were both seeing their careers take off during their attempts to court Grogan, they went camping together a few times in the English <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_District">Lake District</a> as a way of escaping their success. Kemp recalled, “We first started to devise a cover together for the <em>True</em> album when we were up in the mountains, in one of the pubs one evening. He was drawing in his sketchbook and a dove appeared, this little dove.” Band later added alongside it the outline of a man’s head with a brimmed hat, which the band loved; a variation was used for the sleeve of the “True” single. His work was described as “a marker for the look of the time, a jazz-influenced style that could also be seen in an exaggerated fashion in the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Romantic">New Romantic</a> look.” Kemp credits him with having “the skill of coming up with simple, figurative graphics that would set a visual tone for the decade.”</p>

According to the title, this big-band jazz/easy listening album is an attempt at “narrowing the generation gap”, featuring adaptations of recent hits like the Beatles’ “<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ob-La-Di,_Ob-La-Da">Ob La Di, Ob La Da</a>” and (1968) “<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aquarius/Let_the_Sunshine_In">Aquarius</a>” from the musical <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hair_(musical)"><cite>Hair</cite></a> (1967). The cover design tries to appeal to a younger audience as well, embracing a flowery hippie aesthetic complete with multicolored blossoms, a rainbow, a butterfly, and a dove.</p>

<p>The typeface is <a target="_self" class="entity-link" href="https://fontsinuse.com/type_designers/620/milton-glaser" data-entity-code-id="620" data-entity-code-type="TypeDesigner">Milton Glaser</a>’s <strong><a target="_self" class="entity-link" href="https://fontsinuse.com/typefaces/7322/baby-teeth" data-entity-code-id="7322" data-entity-code-type="TypeEntity">Baby Teeth</a></strong>, set on a curve and used in <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/stewf/49736287232/in/album-72157672536589760/">the counterless Opaque style</a>. While “Lester” features the alternate <strong>E</strong> with a short middle bar, the title has the same form but with tiny apertures as found in the Line style.</p>

The book title is set with <strong><a target="_self" class="entity-link" href="https://fontsinuse.com/typefaces/157459/jazzy-croquette" data-entity-code-id="157459" data-entity-code-type="TypeEntity">Jazzy Croquette</a></strong>. This font is used inside, too, together with <strong><a target="_self" class="entity-link" href="https://fontsinuse.com/typefaces/5117/times-new-roman" data-entity-code-id="5117" data-entity-code-type="TypeEntity">Times New Roman</a></strong>. By handing in your form at the Post Office or dictating it by phone before 22nd December (28 December for New Year) the message would be passed through one of the PO’s UK Radio Stations in the form of a telegram message.</p>

<p>Charges varied – any passenger or cargo vessel was 1/8d a word with those to RN vessels reduced to 1/1d a word, although in the case of the “Home Fleet” it was 8½d. Trawlers, drifters, coasters, cross-Channel and short voyage ships was a 1/– a word. The radiotelephone service using the PO’s Ship’s Telephone Service was quite involved as can be imagined and charges varied “according to the position of the ship” above 300 miles. Within 300 miles the charge was not cheap at 12/6d for 3 minutes.</p>

<p>The leaflet has no date but does have a designer shown – Roger Harris – with quite a stylish seascape and vessel on the cover and a dove of peace on the reverse side, carrying the olive branch. More than a dozen bands and artists followed the organizer’s call, for a twelve-hour lineup including <a href="http://www.instagram.com/maviphoenix/">Mavi Phoenix</a>, <a href="http://www.bilderbuch-musik.at/">Bilderbuch</a>, and <a href="http://www.wandamusik.com/">Wanda</a>. Vienna’s <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernst-Happel-Stadion">Ernst-Happel-Stadion</a> sold out in no time, and almost 45,000 people attended the event. For those who didn’t get a ticket, <a href="http://fm4.orf.at/stories/3022756/">Radio FM4</a> and other broadcasters offered a live video stream. All proceeds were <a href="http://www.volkshilfe.at/meine-spende/jetzt-spenden/donations/nothilfe-ukraine/">donated</a> to <a href="http://nachbarinnot.orf.at/nin/2022-hilfe-ukraine100.html">charities</a> that help the people affected by Russia’s war against Ukraine.</p>

<p>The typeface used for the visual identity is <strong><a target="_self" class="entity-link" href="https://fontsinuse.com/typefaces/182408/ozik" data-entity-code-id="182408" data-entity-code-type="TypeEntity">OZIK</a></strong>. Designed by <a target="_self" class="entity-link" href="https://fontsinuse.com/type_designers/3916/erik-marinovich" data-entity-code-id="3916" data-entity-code-type="TypeDesigner">Erik Marinovich</a>, this family was released just a few weeks ago via Erik’s newly launched <a href="http://nuformtype.com/ozik">Nuform</a>. Ozik is used in several of its four weights, and exclusively in lowercase letters featuring the quirky <strong>a</strong> and <strong>e</strong>. The peace dove used as key visual was likewise drawn by Erik, and <a href="http://twitter.com/nuformtype/status/1498678298515320834">shown on his social media channels</a> <a href="http://www.instagram.com/p/CakgqMevmqt/">in March 2022</a>, together with <a href="http://www.instagram.com/p/Ca219mMPJfW/">related</a> <a href="http://www.instagram.com/p/Car58gMla4h/">graphics</a>. The symmetrical illustration featuring doves and flowers is accompanied by multiscript typography: while the Latin part is set in <span><span><span><strong><a href="https://fontsinuse.com/typefaces/32145/edel-grotesk-aurora-grotesk-vi-vii">Aurora-Grotesk VII</a></strong>, the Cyrillic text is shown in two typefaces that, to my knowledge, didn’t offer official support for this script. </span></span></span></p>

<p><span><span><span>Spelling out the album title with glyphs from <strong><a target="_self" class="entity-link" href="https://fontsinuse.com/typefaces/7273/gill-kayo" data-entity-code-id="7273" data-entity-code-type="TypeEntity">Gill Kayo</a></strong> was the easier part: all letters in “aкордеон” (“accordion”) could be approximated by repurposing Latin letters: akopgeoH. In Bulgarian Cyrillic, the lowercase letter <strong>д</strong> (de) can look similar or identical to a Latin single-story <strong>g</strong>. The only required hack was to make a small cap <strong>H</strong> for the Cyrillic <strong><span><span><span>н</span></span></span></strong> (en). For the artist’s name in <strong><a target="_self" class="entity-link" href="https://fontsinuse.com/typefaces/10726/tintoretto" data-entity-code-id="10726" data-entity-code-type="TypeEntity">Tintoretto</a></strong>, the designers had to get more creative: <strong>Д</strong> (De) is a modified <strong>A</strong>, and <strong>М</strong> (Em) and <strong>Ъ</strong> (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_sign">hard sign</a>) are completely new creations. <a href="http://fontsinuse.com/uses/32827/der-gloeckner-von-notre-dame-by-victor-hugo-k">Letraset sheets</a> didn’t include a breve accent for <strong>й</strong> (short i) – but a dot was deemed good enough.</span></span></span></p>

      <title><![CDATA[Local birds at Tilburg city hall]]></title>

The texts were typeset in <strong><a target="_self" class="entity-link" href="https://fontsinuse.com/typefaces/119640/tilburgsans" data-entity-code-id="119640" data-entity-code-type="TypeEntity">TilburgsAns</a></strong>, a typeface based on the idiosyncratic, raw, experimental, humorous and surprising character of this city. TilburgsAns is distributed for free and aimed to connect the Tilburg inhabitants to the city and each other.</p>

<p>The birds were drawn in the same iconic style as the pictograms that are part of the typeface. The graphic design, with its playful and clean tone, aims to bring the figure of Galli as close as possible to a diverse public, highlighting the exclusive use of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romagnol_dialects">Romagnolo language</a> as a living and authentic expression of a poetic style strongly linked to its territory. The drop glyph taken from <strong><a target="_self" class="entity-link" href="https://fontsinuse.com/typefaces/44799/sole-serif" data-entity-code-id="44799" data-entity-code-type="TypeEntity">Sole Serif</a></strong> is a recurring illustrative element used throughout the media.</p>
