The Paloma can from Straightaway Cocktails features New Forest, giving the flavor name a refined and contemporary presence that complements the drink’s bright blend of tequila, grapefruit, and tamarind. Designed by Each Other with illustration by Colby Brooks.

The secondary fonts are Domaine Sans Text for the small text and Triade for the logo.

The wedding ceremony of Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez took place in Venice over several days in late June 2025. The invitation is set in the delicate italic style of Mrs Eaves (Emigre’s 1996 interpretation of Baskerville), accompanied by graphics including eight medium-sized stars (four shooting), three butterflies, three feathers, three gondolas, two birds, a dragonfly and the Rialto bridge. The graphical style has been variously described as “an MS Word template in the 90s”, “worse than an 8-year-old’s scrapbook”, “clip-art”, “tacky” and “the ugliest fucking invite ever”.

In 2023, the Downtown Albany Business Improvement District revitalized its visual identity to reflect the city's dynamic growth and modern appeal. The branding employs Compilation Grotesk, a variable sans-serif typeface designed by Felipe Calderón, known for its adjustable height axis that brings flexibility and a fresh aesthetic to typographic compositions. This choice underscores Albany’s commitment to innovation and community engagement.

The design of this packaging example for Luxury Box Sicilia stems from the packaging producer’s desire to transform two iconic symbols of Easter tradition – the dove and the chocolate egg – into “collectible objects capable of communicating craftsmanship, delicacy and care through a refined and contemporary aesthetic”.

The script typeface – Nautica by Resistenza – helps define the identity of the project, with a thin and sophisticated line that recalls handwriting, while maintaining balance and readability. The quote by Erri de Luca and other information are set in Adobe Garamond Italic.

[Songwriter/guitarist Gary Kemp] was competing for [Altered Images lead singer Clare Grogan’s] attention with Altered Images cover artist David Band and asked him to work with Spandau Ballet on the design for the new album. Because they were both seeing their careers take off during their attempts to court Grogan, they went camping together a few times in the English Lake District as a way of escaping their success. Kemp recalled, “We first started to devise a cover together for the True album when we were up in the mountains, in one of the pubs one evening. He was drawing in his sketchbook and a dove appeared, this little dove.” Band later added alongside it the outline of a man’s head with a brimmed hat, which the band loved; a variation was used for the sleeve of the “True” single. His work was described as “a marker for the look of the time, a jazz-influenced style that could also be seen in an exaggerated fashion in the New Romantic look.” Kemp credits him with having “the skill of coming up with simple, figurative graphics that would set a visual tone for the decade.”

The typography in Optima is by Stephen Horsfall, who here is credited as “Stephen Horzfall”.

The compressed, high-waisted caps of Rainer are the star of Grace Han’s jacket design for The Faraway World. Tracked out, the long-legged letters stride through the flock of city doves as if on stilts.

The novel by Patricia Engel, best-selling author of Infinite Country, was published by Avid Reader Press, an imprint of Simon & Schuster:

Art direction by Alison Forner. The small type is in Neue Helvetica Extended, with Bulmer used for Lauren Groff’s praise.

1969 release by the Lester Lanin Orchestra which was formed in the 1930s and led by Lester Lanin (1907–2004). According to the title, this big-band jazz/easy listening album is an attempt at “narrowing the generation gap”, featuring adaptations of recent hits like the Beatles’ “Ob La Di, Ob La Da” and (1968) “Aquarius” from the musical Hair (1967). The cover design tries to appeal to a younger audience as well, embracing a flowery hippie aesthetic complete with multicolored blossoms, a rainbow, a butterfly, and a dove.

The typeface is Milton Glaser’s Baby Teeth, set on a curve and used in the counterless Opaque style. While “Lester” features the alternate E with a short middle bar, the title has the same form but with tiny apertures as found in the Line style.

ITC Serif Gothic with the tight spacing that’s so typical for the 1980s and various alternate glyphs including the angled e, the descending f, and the uncial E. The descending t is customized.

The Different Drum: Community Making and Peace (Touchstone, 1987) is a book by psychiatrist Morgan Scott Peck (1936–2005) who is best known for The Road Less Traveled from 1978.

Rose Asphalte is a book series for kids published by Bayard Editions in France. The first volume, La colo des zombis, was written by Anne Schmauch and illustrated by Raphaël Chabassol, better known as Mokë.

Bangel Black Rounded is used for the logo title, and Bangel Black for the chapter titles. The book title is set with Jazzy Croquette. This font is used inside, too, together with Times New Roman. On the back cover, it’s seen with Brandon Grotesque.

“Help. Prisoners of the sheep institute.” When her carrier pigeon brings her this message, Rose immediately signs up for this strange camp, taking along her best friend Firmin. A leaflet advertising the Post Office’s radiotelegram and radiotelephone services that allowed you to send seasonsal greetings to family members or friends who were serving in the Merchant Navy or Royal Navy. By handing in your form at the Post Office or dictating it by phone before 22nd December (28 December for New Year) the message would be passed through one of the PO’s UK Radio Stations in the form of a telegram message.

Charges varied – any passenger or cargo vessel was 1/8d a word with those to RN vessels reduced to 1/1d a word, although in the case of the “Home Fleet” it was 8½d. Trawlers, drifters, coasters, cross-Channel and short voyage ships was a 1/– a word. The radiotelephone service using the PO’s Ship’s Telephone Service was quite involved as can be imagined and charges varied “according to the position of the ship” above 300 miles. Within 300 miles the charge was not cheap at 12/6d for 3 minutes.

The leaflet has no date but does have a designer shown – Roger Harris – with quite a stylish seascape and vessel on the cover and a dove of peace on the reverse side, carrying the olive branch. I suspect, given the design, this is a mid-60s version of the annual leaflet.

Snow White Dove is the debut album by Leeds based musician James Shakeshaft and his band. The artwork channels the look of folk and country covers of the 1960s and 1970s featuring a header set in Indigo designed by André Chante (alias Andy Song) and issued by Hollenstein in Paris around 1972, Franklin Gothic and Nimbus Sans.

F37 Judge and Noe Display

This year marks the return of the Birmingham Design Festival (BDF) after a three-year hiatus. Sponsoring the event is F37 Foundry & Studio, a type foundry and design studio based in Greater Manchester.

F37 Foundry supplied Birmingham Design with a wide array of their fonts, including F37 Judge, F37 Caslon, and F37 Factory. These are paired with the festival’s standard typefaces, Graphik and Noe Display, as well as NT Cornelia for the wordmark.

This years festival promises to be an incredible comeback, with a lineup filled with incredible speakers, workshops, and pop-ups. Speaking at the event will be Richard Turley, Mr. Bingo, Simon Dixon and Aporva Baxi, Kate Dawkins and Morag Mysercough just to name a few.

This Saturday Austria’s music scene got together for a big concert in support of the people of Ukraine. More than a dozen bands and artists followed the organizer’s call, for a twelve-hour lineup including Mavi Phoenix, Bilderbuch, and Wanda. Vienna’s Ernst-Happel-Stadion sold out in no time, and almost 45,000 people attended the event. For those who didn’t get a ticket, Radio FM4 and other broadcasters offered a live video stream. All proceeds were donated to charities that help the people affected by Russia’s war against Ukraine.

The typeface used for the visual identity is OZIK. Designed by Erik Marinovich, this family was released just a few weeks ago via Erik’s newly launched Nuform. Ozik is used in several of its four weights, and exclusively in lowercase letters featuring the quirky a and e. The peace dove used as key visual was likewise drawn by Erik, and shown on his social media channels in March 2022, together with related graphics. At the concert, two big birds framed the stage, carrying a musical note in their beaks.

Uncredited sleeve design for an album by Bulgarian folk musician and accordionist Dimiter Stoykov (Димитър Стойков, b. 1931), released by state label Balkanton in 1974. The symmetrical illustration featuring doves and flowers is accompanied by multiscript typography: while the Latin part is set in Aurora-Grotesk VII, the Cyrillic text is shown in two typefaces that, to my knowledge, didn’t offer official support for this script.

Spelling out the album title with glyphs from Gill Kayo was the easier part: all letters in “aкордеон” (“accordion”) could be approximated by repurposing Latin letters: akopgeoH. In Bulgarian Cyrillic, the lowercase letter д (de) can look similar or identical to a Latin single-story g. The only required hack was to make a small cap H for the Cyrillic н (en). For the artist’s name in Tintoretto, the designers had to get more creative: Д (De) is a modified A, and М (Em) and Ъ (hard sign) are completely new creations. Letraset sheets didn’t include a breve accent for й (short i) – but a dot was deemed good enough.

What defines a City? Is it its buildings, public spaces or people? No Seat At The Table is a fictional graphic novel about the local and global influences of gentrification on citizens in Turkish and Dutch cities. The book highlights four neighbourhoods where this phenomenon is occurring: Piyalepaşa in Istanbul, Ismetpasa in Ankara, De Kolenkitbuurt in Amsterdam, and Lombok in Utrecht. Each story is told from the perspective of pigeons and inspired by real life experiences of residential displacement in Turkey and the Netherlands. The stories critically investigate gentrification, the housing crisis and the current interpretations of setting priorities and affordability in urban planning. By doing so, it aims to facilitate the conversation on inclusive and sustainable cities for all.

In the new city hall of Tilburg the windows of five conference rooms were decorated with birds with specific dialect names. The texts were typeset in TilburgsAns, a typeface based on the idiosyncratic, raw, experimental, humorous and surprising character of this city. TilburgsAns is distributed for free and aimed to connect the Tilburg inhabitants to the city and each other.

The birds were drawn in the same iconic style as the pictograms that are part of the typeface. They are a symbol for the different ‘voices’ of the city dwellers.

To celebrate the centenary of the poet Walter Galli (1921–2002), the City of Cesena has planned three days of readings and an exhibition in the streets of the city centre with some of the most significant poems by the author. The graphic design, with its playful and clean tone, aims to bring the figure of Galli as close as possible to a diverse public, highlighting the exclusive use of the Romagnolo language as a living and authentic expression of a poetic style strongly linked to its territory. The drop glyph taken from Sole Serif is a recurring illustrative element used throughout the media.

The project was carried out in collaboration with Cesena Comics and Stories and Associazione Culturale Barbablù; the coordination and selection of texts is by Elisa Rocchi.
