This natural history classic about animals’ favorite treats includes fascinating facts about tickbirds, gorillas, ostriches, koalas, platypuses, porcupines and other exotic creatures eating habits. Told in amusing rhyming verse and republished with all new illustrations.

Animal Snackers is the first book by Pratt Institute graduate Betsy Lewin (b. 1937). It was published with bread-dough animals (and ITC Souvenir and Cooper Black for the typography) by Dodd, Mead & Company in 1980.

The book was reissued by Henry Holt & Company in hardback in 2004, with revised text and new illustrations by the author, now rendered in brush and ink. Designer Patrick Collins used Bonita for the cover and the headings. Jim Parkinson’s all-caps face from 1996 is set on a bouncing baseline and with a subtle drop shadow. The rhymes are added in Century Gothic.

The No-Tel Motel is situated on 2425 N Oracle Rd in Tucson, Arizona. The sign features Giorgio (VGC, 1966). It’s unclear when it went up. Back in 1956, the place was known as De Anza Motel.

A beautifully illustrated and brightly coloured book from UCLAN Publishing. Written by Dr Adam S. Smith and Jonathan Emmett, and illustrated throughout by Adam Larkum. The text is split into three styles, each with its own font. Aunt Mildred is used for the speech bubbles, Hawkland for general text and the main story, and Pembroke is used for the information found in the coloured boxes on each page spread. The title font on the cover is Blackcat.

Normally we associate Tekton with measured architectural penmanship, so it was an amusing surprise to see one of my favourite typefaces being used (in its Bold Extended style) for the signage of a noodle bar while walking in the centre of Sheffield, UK. Secondary Latin script text is in Arial.

Noodle Doodle, and the other secondary and Hanzi script text, is in yellow-on-red, matching the decor of the restaurant’s shopfront.

So, this is the classic sticker that you will sometimes see on promotional copies of old records. It was a not so subtle hint to try to get radio DJs to announce the name of the song when they played it on their station.

I'm looking to re-create it with slightly different text to put on T-shirts that I sell (When you wear it, share it!). I assume it's some long lost phototype Helvetica clone, but I'm hoping you guys can point me to a digitization that has a straight tailed comma like the one in the example.

Épinal prints were made at Imagerie d'Épinal, a printing house founded in 1796 in Épinal (France). They are rendered in bright sharp colors thanks to the mechanical aquatype process. This French machine from the beginning of the 20th century replaced the hand stencil method to produce large series.

The photos shown here are from a series of sheet music probably printed in the 1980s. The fonts in use include Vendôme (1952), ITC Barcelona (1981), and ITC Souvenir (1970).
