The Internet era has deeply reshaped how we produce, consume and communicate. But despite living in an increasingly connected society the astounding amount of information we meet online can quickly overwhelm us.

Delving into these issues, my thesis project Turning Clicks into Pages explores the relationship between analog and digital media in the contemporary landscape. The work deconstructs Twitter’s navigation system into tangible matter, proposing a hybrid experience between material and immaterial space-time. What happens when information that was never meant to become physical is saved as something permanent? Detached from its original context, does the reading experience remain the same?

Student assignment from ESAD Matosinhos 2021: “redesign a paperback pocket book or travel book. The chosen work must be timeless and have gathered consensus regarding its quality.”

From the selection list of the El País newspaper I picked C by Tom McCarthy. The novel tells the story of a boy who spends his childhood between silence and the noise of static, and all his life was marked by the mysteries of communication: by codes used during the First World War, by seances in London after the war, and by enigmas of Egypt. C is “an ambitious and original novel in its historical and psychological scope”.

For the book’s core I chose Feijoa, from Klim Type Foundry, a contemporary and well-designed typeface. I chose it because it is serifed, which makes it easier to read in long texts.

For the rest of the book (in titles, subtitles, pagination, among others), I used Neue Haas Grotesk, an older design, however, modern. The choice of this font is also due to the fact that it is a grotesque, associating it with something austere and sober at the same time.

The C on the cover is a cut circle (very similar to the C in the Futura typeface), representing the life cycle of the main character and how it was shortened by not so good events throughout the story.

This photozine was an academic project for a class of photography applied to design, at ESAD Matosinhos. We had to create a narrative using photography, and then lay it out in a coherent format. The story I chose to tell was the excerpt of Simon Reynolds’ Retromania that you can read on the green page.

The narrative parts from the identification of massive entertainment with chewing gum; something you consume repetitively and which loses its flavor soon. From there came out the story of a girl chewing bubblegum that goes through different emotional stages.

I chose Aneirin for the resemblance of its serifs to bubble gum, and then Avara to antagonise the round shapes of the bubbles. Every typographic element is stretched or justified in order to convey the idea of padding content.

This is part of an academic project made at ESAD Matosinhos. Each student was asked to create two editorial projects on the basis of a journal. Content and form are connected. The two antagonists are in conflict: one represents moral, the other rebellion.

Crazy Kids Food is a catalog for a fictional exhibition about vintage breakfast graphics, made at ESAD Matosinhos. It emphasizes the importance of packaging and includes an interview with Dan Goodsell, the author of Mr. Toast.

Pli, Arte + Design Nº4 “Hot & Cool” was published in 2013. It is a publication of ESAD, School of Arts and Design of Matosinhos. José Bártolo and Sérgio Afonso were the editors of this issue. Inês Neponuceno was the art director.

This issue is dedicated to the theme “Hot & Cool”. This theme evokes the warm state associated with the conflicts and antagonisms we live in, and the cold state associated with reaction phenomena, such as critique and pragmatic that in general characterize the contemporary society we live right now, focusing on arts and design.

The project includes three different typefaces, such as Paperback (House Industries) for text and Solido Condensed (DSType) for text and headlines. For the major headlines, it uses Artigo Display by Nova Type Foundry, at the time not released yet and only used for this purpose.

For this academic project at ESAD Matosinhos, the main goal was the creation of an editorial object with a neutral, timeless and contemporary design, since it was a book with more than 6000 years, still being used today. The Art of War, by Sun Tzu, is a book that offers the reader a set of tips, rules and ways to beat the enemy without resorting to violence. After analyzing the book, I chose to work on the strategy concept associated with the map object and, for the cover I chose to draw a grid, where each reader can paste red circles, as a metaphor for each one to be able to create his strategy, thus giving rise to an infinite set of unique and different layers. The typography on the cover was worked in a circular form, resembling the representation of an armillary sphere. For visual content, I used images of wind and heat forecasts, as well as topographical representations of various terrains of China, also placing their coordinates.
