Cookbooks tell us how to cook. Blasphemy tells us how to break the rules. A 104-page act of defiance, it fuses culinary experimentation with cultural provocation, challenging everything we accept as sacred in food.

In cooking, as in life, we are bound by tradition. Rules passed down through generations define what we eat and how we prepare it. Blasphemy dares to question those rules.

The book’s design mirrors its irreverence. Inspired by the Bible, the ultimate rulebook, it twists traditional typesetting, injects chaotic layouts, and revels in rebellious aesthetics. Almost-illegible overlays, mirrored text, misalignments, and pixelated photographic errors make it feel as though the book is fighting against its own existence. The book design features Amador and Eskapade Fraktur.

Its creator? Olly Wood has no professional culinary experience to his name. The very act of authoring and designing this book is, quite fittingly, blasphemy itself.

This editorial project is a result from personal questions, explorations, research and readings around popular religiosity. This book explores religiosity and spirituality with a local and popular graphic look. It was printed in a single copy.

The texts presented in the publication are results of personal notes and individual interpretations.

The book seeks to show the process of deinstitutionalization and individualization of beliefs, and the contrast between different religious and ideological systems, so the fonts used need to have an evident contrast between them, so a blackletter typeface (Respira Black) was used in contrast with a script font (Carta Nueva) and other contrasting fonts for the headlines, including Ohno Fatface, Gopher and Faglia Serif. On the other hand, Kiffo BT was used as the body text font since it is an easy-to-read and fluid font.

Josef Glaser is (or was?) a Fleischer (butcher) in Weitra, in Austria’s Waldviertel. Glaser is additionally labeled as Selcher, which is someone who smokes meat and sausages, and sometimes also offers hot meals.

The job titles on the store front are shown in mounted dimensional letters based on Rudolf Koch’s Deutsche Schrift. In German-speaking countries, ligatures like ch and ck are considered atomic in blackletter typography. That’s why they weren’t dissolved even when the words were letterspaced. (It’s not known whether the butcher also sells mutton.) Glaser’s name above is rendered in letterforms that only vaguely resemble Koch’s original design. It also foregoes the “long s” that would be required according to traditonal typesetting rules: Joſef Glaſer.
