Halloween in use on the cover of Puppet on a String, an album by English pop singer Sandie Shaw (b. 1947). Released by Pye Records in May 1967, it’s named after the opening track with which Shaw represented the United Kingdom in the Eurovision Song Contest 1967 held in Vienna. “Puppet on a String” won the contest, making it the first of the United Kingdom’s five Eurovision wins.

Kinksize Session is the first EP from British rock group The Kinks, released in the UK in 1964 shortly after their first LP.

The cover features extra-large, all-caps settings of Franklin Gothic and Antique Olive Nord incorporated with a photo of the band to further accentuate the Kinksized sense of scale. The back cover is less confidently styled, using a hodgepodge of British sans-serifs in a somewhat awkward composition.

Joseph Francis Robert “Joe” Dolan (Mullinger 1943 —2007 Dublin) was an entertainer/singer with a number of international hit songs from the late 1960s on. In 2008, a life-size statue of Dolan was revealed in his birth town.

The cover of this Portuguese release of “Sister Mary” uses Lucky (in all lowercase, except for the M), with an l and t which are remarkably similar. How many Portuguese listeners have thought they purchased a hit single by “Joe Dotan” (or “Joe Docon”) instead of “Joe Dolan”?

Brotherhood Of Man is a British pop group best known for winning the Eurovision Song Contest in 1976 with “Save Your Kisses for Me”. “Kiss Me, Kiss Your Baby” is another hit single from the year before. The disco pop song reached the Top Ten in several European countries. The typographic choices on the various releases impressively illustrate the dominant role that dry-transfer lettering played for single sleeve artwork during this period.

French sleeve ft. Windsor Elongated (carried by Letraset).

German sleeve ft. Aachen (a Letraset original) and Futura Light, another face available from the English manufacturer of rub-down lettering sheets.

Spanish version with B-side “Love me for what I am”, ft. Dreamline and two weights of

Churchward Design. These faces were available from Mecanorma, the French competitor of Letraset. Mecanorma’s version of Churchward Design 70 was named Galaxy.

Eggomania is a wire-like typeface designed by Tony Yates and issued by London-based Face Photosetting around 1971. So far, no-one has missed it enough to engage in a digital revival.

This compilation of Status Quo recordings was released by Golden Hour, described at Discogs as a “Budget record label – it offered ‘Sixty Minutes of Entertainment’. Earlier issues had a ‘clock face’ embossed on the front cover. The first Golden Hour release appeared Christmas 1971.”
