On 70 pages with 60 illustrations, Art and a Century of Canadian Rowing recounts one hundred years of sports history. The book was written by Peter King and published by Amberley House, Toronto, in 1980. The author is a former president of the Ottawa Rowing Club and vice president of both the Ontario Rowing Association and the Canadian Association of Amateur Oarsmen. He has been national team manager and an official at the 1976 Olympic Games. In 1980, he was editor of the national rowing magazine CATCH, and chairmen of the Centennial Committe to celebrate the centennial of the rowing association.

The typeface chosen for the gold stamped title on the cover dates from the beginning of Canadian rowing history. Designed by John F. Cumming, Skjald was issued by the Dickinson Type Foundry in Boston in c. 1890. The treatment, however, is quintessentially 1980s, with tightly spaced letters as well as lines, and a plethora of swashes that crash into the neighboring glyphs. Film versions of Skjald were available from Photo-Lettering, Inc., Lettergraphics, and Facsimile Fonts. Homage to the Alphabet (1980) has a showing of the glyph set, including the alternates for A R W and a that were used here.
