Ashbury Heights is a Swedish synth/electropop group formed in 2005 by singer, producer and songwriter Anders Hagström and singer Yasmine Uhlin (until 2008 and again since 2020). Three Cheers for the Newlydeads was their debut album released on the 5th October 2007.

The font used in the album cover and throughout the CD is Bleeding Cowboys, which was released just earlier that year.

The visual identity for 070 Shake’s sophomore album You Can’t Kill Me from 2022 was developed as a cross-media campaign including album artwork, logotype, photography, packaging, merchandise, tour posters, and promotional copy. Eddie Mandell designed the project in collaboration with 070 Shake and The C.O.R.E.

The typographic system pairs Futura (Paul Renner) with Tempos Mono (Samara Keller) for supporting and informational text and Anton (Vernon Adams) as the main title font. The blackletter face is Anglican Text (Dieter Steffmann).

The album cover features a Nicola Samorì painting, which is used alongside the typography. The cover was listed at #15 in Our Culture’s “50 Best Album Covers of 2022”.

IFA Wartburg is a Swedish band founded in 1984 by Nils Lundwall and Magnus Michaeli in Upplands Väsby, near Stockholm. They played characters, exaggerated Germans named Heinz Klinger and Rolf Kempinski respectively.
The lyrics, sung in learned (and, at times, broken) German, were largely inspired by the socialist era of East Germany and the USSR, though they were often silly or humorous in nature.

Shown here is IFA Wartburg’s only full-length album, Im Dienste des Sozialismus (“In the service of socialism”), released in 1998 by Plattenmeister. The uncredited design features two weights from Berthold’s Block family, the schwer (“heavy”) and the schmal (“narrow”).

Minnie ’n Me: Songs Just for Girls album cover (1990), ft. the italic and roman styles of ITC Century Bold Condensed for secondary text

Minnie ’n Me was a 1990s merchandise branding program from the Walt Disney Company featuring the comic character Minnie Mouse in her childhood days. Her youthful companions include Daisy Duck, Clarabelle Cow, Penelope “Penny” Pooch, Patti Pony, T.J. Turtle, Heather Hippo, Lilly Lamb, Minnie's dog, Fifi, and Daisy's kitten, Trixie. Later on, Disney added Figaro, Mickey Mouse, and Donald Duck to the mix. On the whole, this line of merchandise was mainly targeted towards elementary-aged girls ages 4–9.

There was a wide variety of Minnie ’n Me products, including dolls and other toys, trading cards and stationary, perfume and jewelry, luggage, bedding and more. The logo used for this brand is based on Sweetheart, and some of the merchandise, mostly books, actually uses the typeface.

Similar in design to Photo-Lettering's Bonaparte and Lettergraphic's Spring, Sweetheart features terminals and tittles decorated with hearts and an alternate B with a heart-shaped counter. Additionally, its f, t and ! have arrow-like qualities that suggest Cupid and his bow.

Last time I posted a record cover by Sly & Robbie, it was to bid farewell to Robbie Shakespeare. Now Sly Dunbar is sadly gone as well. The legendary Jamaican drummer died 26 January 2026 at the age of 73. The Guardian has an obituary by Ben Beaumont-Thomas.

Shown here is the CD cover and a vinyl record label for Sly and Robbie’s Taxi Sound. This compilation album was released in 2005 on Marcus Weedon’s Auralux Records, marking the thirtieth anniversary of Sly & Robbie’s own label, Taxi Records. The Art Deco caps with stripe pattern are based on A.M. Cassandre’s Bifur, with a few changes: compared to the 1928 original, S got a wider base and Y a second arm, the middle part of B was made longer, X has solid diagonals on the right as well, and U was widened.

A Dense Swarm of Ancient Stars is the third studio album by electronic music duo I Monster from Sheffield, UK. Released in 2009, it “sees the band in their usual mood – playful psychedelic electronic new wave pop.” The cover art was designed by band member Jarrod Gosling, credited under his pseudonym Varrod Goblink.

The Berliner Philharmoniker under conductor Herbert von Karajan (1908–1989) performed Gustav Holst’s The Planets in January 1981. The recording was released by Deutsche Grammophon, with a cover design by Werner Koberstein and art direction from Lutz Bode.

The montage of the Saturnian system is a composite of several images taken by NASA’s Voyager 1 spacecraft during its Saturn encounter in November 1980. It’s not correct in scale or perspective. The moon at the top left is Dione, the one in the center is Mimas with its prominent Herschel crater, and the larger one to the right is Tethys. The reddish one at the bottom left is Titan, and the remaining one should be either Enceladus or Rhea.

Multiple editions have been released over the years, in various color variants. The primary typeface for all of them is American Gothic. This variation on Engravers Gothic [edit: rather Copperplate Gothic, see comments] was drawn by Vladimir Andrich for Alphatype in 1967.

Bordering on LTypI: Platelet for The Planets. Its designer, Conor Mangat, comments on the genesis of his debut typeface:

Platelet grew out of a 4-day workshop given to students—most with no type design experience—at CalArts in October 1992. The brief, from Phil Baines, asked for an original alphabet to be designed for a specific outdoor purpose, taking into consideration the context for usage, appropriateness and meaning, and traditional notions of good typography.

Consequently, Platelet is based directly on characters and figures found on the car license plates in California. Its original character set comprised only a single lowercase alphabet and non-lining figures, ostensibly to complement the existing all-caps characters on the plates. For its commercial release, however, the set was extended to include alternate, small capitals and other commonly used text characters – somewhat ironic considering the original brief had principally been to create specific display faces that weren’t just scaled text faces.

Cover designer Paul Marc Mitchell took advantage of the added small caps, and mixed them with the lowercase forms.

This album with the Berliner Philharmoniker’s rendition of The Planets under Simon Rattle (b. 1955) was first released as a double CD in 2006. Gustav Holst’s orchestral suite is complemented by four additional tracks by contemporary composers – thanks to Colin Matthews, Pluto finally gets acknowledged, too (just to lose its status as a proper planet the same year) – plus a video by Paul Bates.

“My Prerogative” is a single from Britney Spears’ similarly-titled album Greatest Hits: My Prerogative, released on September 21, 2004 by Jive Records. The art direction and design is credited to Jackie Murphy and Courtney Walter, with photography by Kathryn Indiek.

The artist’s name uses Anime Pornstar, a free font created by Jason Harlan of Eternal Maelstrom Studios. The single title uses all-caps Compacta, in an angled box similar to the corresponding album. Other text uses Alternate Gothic.

You’ve Come a Long Way, Baby is the second album by English big beat musician Fatboy Slim, an alias of Norman Cook, released in October 1998 on Skint Records in the UK and Astralwerks in the US.

Four singles were released from the album, “The Rockafeller Skank”, “Gangster Tripping”, “Praise You”, and “Right Here, Right Now”, all of which peaked within the top ten on the UK Singles Chart.

The cover art, conceived by Red Design, uses a photograph of an obese young man dressed in a T-shirt bearing the words “I’m #1 so why try harder” while holding a cigarette. The photograph was taken at the 1983 Fat People’s Festival in Danville, Virginia, and provided by the Rex Features photo library. Cook spent years attempting to identify the man on the cover, hoping to pay him, but as of 2025 had not been successful.

Vol. 1, Electronic Moods from Budapest to Brazil

In June 1999, Belgian lounge label Life Enhancing Audio released a compilation of downtempo chillout tracks named Transatlantik Lounging (Electronic Moods from Budapest to Brazil), which then spawned three sequels by 2001.

Judging from the k whose diagonals meet the stem in a point and the closed 4, the title typeface is URW’s Nimbus Sans Black Condensed Italic. Linotype’s equivalent, Helvetica Inserat, is distinguished by an open 4. A light extended style of Eurostile serves for the label name and the text on the bottom of the covers.

In July 2016, Australian electronic group the Avalanches released their second album, Wildflower.

While the front cover has no type at all, except for a sticker with Jersey M54 for the band name, all-caps Arnold Böcklin for the album title, and ITC Franklin Gothic for additional text, the typographic party takes place on the back: it features a different style for each track on the album, with embroidered letterforms. Most of the song names are based on fonts, with or without modifications.

Volume 3 is the seventh installment in the You Don't Know Jack series, and the third general knowledge edition. It was originally released on October 31st, 1997, and is hosted by Cookie Masterson.

The primary typeface still is Franklin Gothic – see the previous post about the YDKJ logo. Snell Roundhand Black is used for “schmivia!” on the CD-ROM label. In the game, Franklin Gothic is combined with Éclat to make the question segues.

Apoptygma Berzerk released their single “Kathy’s Song (Come Lie Next To Me)” 25 years ago, and recently have published a remixed 25th anniversary edition.

A CD-single remix release in the year 2000 (soon after the original, presumably) uses an image of a young woman (Kathy?) in PETSCII art on a Commodore 64 and uses the Commodore 64 ROM font for the track title. This year’s release features the same young woman in bitmap art on a Classic-era Mac, and uses the Mac’s menu font Chicago for the band name and track title; Chicago appearing in its bitmap strike. Chicago also appears in the Mac Paint menu bar on the screen of the Mac. The background of this image is made of a repeating circle motif, and this motif is one of the 8×8 desktop backgrounds that are selectable from the control panel of the original Mac. Susan Kare designed Chicago, the original Mac control panel, and quite possibly the desktop backgrounds (I couldn’t find a definitive note).

The Commodore 64 ROM font, like most ROM fonts from the 8-bit microcomputer era, doesn’t seem to have a name. Given the relative simplicity of reconstructing 8-bit fonts from the ROM, reconstructions have probably been done many times over.

You Don’t Know Jack is a series of video games developed by Jackbox Games (formerly known as Jellyvision Games) and Berkeley Systems, as well as the title of the first You Don’t Know Jack game in the series. You Don’t Know Jack, framed as a game show “where high culture and pop culture collide”, combines trivia with comedy.

The logo of You Don’t Know Jack (YDKJ) uses all-caps Franklin Gothic, and specifically its Condensed width.

The franchise also uses other widths of Franklin Gothic. “YDKJ Classic Pack Bundle” combines the regular width with the Extra Condensed.

The logo as it appeared in a 1996 ad by Berkeley Systems. The text at the top uses Franklin Gothic Condensed and Extra Condensed. “The irreverent quiz show party game” is in some version of Helvetica Inserat. “Free Demo” and the URL use Eagle.

Cover for You Don’t Know Jack: 5th Dementia is the thirteenth installment in the series, released in 2000. The secondary font is the bold italic style of ITC Benguiat Gothic.

The second, self-titled album by alternative rock band Bellwether from Minnesota was released in 2000 on Rustbelt Records. Bass player Phil Tippin took care of the cover design and used News Gothic for the front cover text.

The song names on the back use VTypewriter SmithUpright (1996), likewise in all lowercase letters. Susan Townsend’s grunged typewriter font is one of the many followers of Trixie that were made in the 1990s.

Im Herzen der Katze by Jina Khayyer is a German literary fiction novel published by Suhrkamp Verlag (Berlin). The cover design and illustration were created by Barbara Thoben of the Cologne-based studio Lübbeke Naumann Thoben, while the book’s typesetting was handled by Satz-Offizin Hümmer in Waldbüttelbrunn. The audiobook, published by Der Audio Verlag, is also available on CD, read by Pegah Ferydoni. The novel was nominated for the German Book Prize 2025.
