Ellison Wonderland is a collection of short stories by Harlan Ellison (1934–2018). First published in the United States in 1962, this is the jacket for the first UK edition, issued by Millington in 1979.

Instead of working with an illustrator, designer Lorie Epstein opted for a purely typographic approach featuring Quartermaine. She separated the thin and thick strokes of Stuart Longley’s open, dimensional unicase typeface and gave them different colors: blue and purple for the author’s name, and orange and pink for the title.

The Science Fiction Book Club mention in the bottom right corner is set in ITC Avant Garde Gothic, with its alternate e and faux small caps.

On Wings of Song is a science fiction novel written by Thomas M. Disch (1940–2008). First published as a serial in The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction in three installments in early 1979, it was published in hardback by St. Martin’s Press in August 1979. This is Bantam’s paperback edition from a year later, with cover art by Lou Feck.

The typographer at Bantam arranged title and author’s name in three lines of Gonzales Flair. The display typeface by Francisco Gonzales with the characteristic long shade is featured with some of its curly glyphs (C G S) as well as two of its extending swash forms (for W and A). Secondary text is set in all-caps ITC Clearface.

Signet’s paper back edition of The Beast that Shouted Love at the Heart of the World was first published in April 1974. This printing is from 1976.

The cover combines art by Bob Pepper with a typeface by Jerry Matejka: Soul was issued by VGC around 1972. It here is used exclusively in caps from the Bold weight, and paired with ITC Avant Garde Gothic.

The Beast that Shouted Love at the Heart of the World is a collection of fifteen short stories by Harlan Ellison (1934–2018), first published by Avon Books in paperback in July 1969. A hardback edition followed ten months later, by the Science Fiction Book Club. The titular story won the 1969 Hugo Award for Best Short Story. The last story, “A Boy and His Dog”, is among Ellison’s most famous ones, and was adapted into a film of the same name.

The cover design by Leo and Diane Dillon uses lettering, not type. It does qualify for Fonts In Use, though: the letterforms are clearly patterned after a typeface, namely Davison Art Nouveau, a.k.a. the Dune font. This is evident in hallmark glyphs like the O with the internal swash terminal. The designers even referenced several of the typeface’s many alternates, more or less directly: there’s the R that curls inside the counter, the one reaching below the baseline, and the one where the leg curves to the left. The accompanying sans on the paperback edition is Helvetica Condensed.

The typeface is Circo, a narrow bottom-heavy Italienne by Czech designer Jan Solpera (*1939). It was released by Berthold Fototypes in 1971 and copied by Lettergraphics as Cirque.
