Movie tie-in edition from ca. 1974

When “Rock Around the Clock” returned to the U.S. charts in 1974 after being used as the theme for the movie American Graffiti (1973), Pickwick Records brought out a new pressing of a best-of compilation by Bill Haley and the Comets, featuring a cover design that was already used for their 1970/1971 issue. The same album was first released in 1968 under the title Biggest Hits.

The main typeface is Pink Mouse (PLINC, 1970) by Charles Papirtis, here used in its “E” style, i.e. with contour and drop shadow, in trichromatic lowercase letters. The song titles are in all-caps Futura, likewise set on an angle. The movie tie-in edition adds Frankfurter with Univers.

An earlier pressing from 1971, without the reference to American Graffiti

A relatively early and copious use of ITC Neon, in alternating line colors. The film typeface by Ronné Bonder and Tom Carnase was released one year earlier, in 1970. It’s an adaptation of Prisma (1930), Rudolf Koch’s all-caps multiline companion to Kabel. This ancestry is particularly visible in the narrow C and the wide M. Unfortunately, there’s no quality digitization of ITC Neon. My favorite detail in David Krieger’s cover design is the added entry stroke at the top left – as if this was a real neon sign where all parts need to be somehow connected and hooked up.

Compiles the two live albums recorded for Sonet Records of Sweden and originally released in Europe in 1968. However, none of the photos included in the album actually show the lineup that performed in 1968; several images (including the one of Haley on the cover) date back to approximately 1964, while the gatefold image dates from either 1969 or 1970 (based on the musicians visible).

Shake, Rattle and Roll is the title of an early rock and roll compilation album issued by Decca Records (DL 5560) in 1955, and featuring music by Bill Haley & His Comets. […] The cover art for this album, depicting a cartoon image of Haley and the Comets riding a hot rod, would later be reused by Bear Family Records for their 2006 Haley box set release Rock ’n’ Roll Arrives.

The cover typography combines bichromatic Orplid on a bouncing baseline (“SHAKE”), black sans-serif caps, possibly from Twentieth Century Ultrabold Italic, with an added scribbled inline (“RATTLE”), and red caps from a straight-sided gothic, maybe Alternate Gothic, set on a curve (“ROLL”). The handwritten “and” is probably just that, and not type. The songs are set in regular and condensed styles of Futura (or one of its US epigones like Twentieth Century or Tempo).
