Poster campaign in 2025 to find new staff

The Berliner Wasserbetriebe is Berlin’s municipal utility company, responsible for managing the city’s water supply, wastewater, and rainwater infrastructure. Through its subsidiary, Berliner Stadtwerke, it also provides electricity. The company has used TheSans, designed by LucasFonts, as its corporate typeface for many years, and continues to do so to this day. The font family is used consistently in advertising, on the website, and on signage. The italic font choice for the logo is perfect for a company that works with water, conveying a sense of dynamism.

Ballycopeland Windmill is the last working windmill in Northern Ireland and the only example of a functional roller reefing system left in the world. Tandem worked with the passionate team at Historic Environment Division to design and deliver site-wide interpretation at the newly restored windmill and surrounding complex at Ballycopeland.

Working with a unique heritage site such as this, we needed to strike a balance between authentic interpretation of its history and the benefits of technology and design to enhance visitors’ understanding. We employed a combination of industrial heritage inspired graphic design, physical interactives and engaging AV to bring the stories of the windmill to life.

Through interpretation in the form of engaging graphic design, AV and physical interactives, visitors get a sense of the day-to-day realities of a working windmill like Ballycopeland, as well as the skills and expertise of the specialists helping to conserve and restore this heritage gem.

A visual language inspired by the sails of the mill was complemented with display serif Arnhem, a typeface sympathetic to the industrial setting, and NN Nouvelle Grotesk, a typeface reflecting the everyday. Similarly, as the windmill was to be a destination for all ages and abilities, we used accessible san-serif FS Me, developed in association with Mencap, for interpretive graphic panels, which were complemented by a suite of delivery mechanisms to help bring the stories of the mill to life.

The promotion (shown below) is inspired by the interior of a late 1970s magazine. In addition to Chalet 1970, it uses Futura, with Alte Haas Grotesk in the footer info.

Man of La Mancha is a 1972 film adaptation of Dale Wasserman’s Broadway musical based on Don Quixote. Produced and directed by Arthur Hiller, the film stars Peter O’Toole and Sophia Loren.

For this Hungarian poster from 1973, István Bakos shows Don Quixote’s head floating over the iconic windmills. Above the illustration, the typography is set in two typefaces that were both designed by Bob Newman for Letraset: Manuscript Capitals (1972) and Pump Bold (1970) – with Dulcinea’s face tucked between the names. The contoured caps are used with both forms of A and partly overlap; the ultrageometric sans is used with barely any word spacing.

I was patiently waiting for an excuse to use Sandrine Nugue’s Orientation, and the opportunity presented itself when the good people at Garage Project came to us with their “Turbine” beer. Their brief was to explore the concept of the local wind turbine as a pinwheel, and Orientation’s sharp blades and sense of motion seemed perfect.

We created the illustration and type treatment, and designed the label, box and street posters. The team at Garage Project took care of the small text on the labels – set in Trade Gothic. Among the other typefaces on the packaging are Erbaum (“PALE ALE”) and Sofia (text on the side of the packaging box).

Amstel was the official beer of São Paulo’s Pride 2019. To celebrate this sponsorship we developed a colourful identity with icons from the brand’s hometown: Amsterdam.
