Handmade in Japan. The Pursuit of Perfection in Traditional Crafts is a book published in 2020 by Gestalten and Irvin Wong. In response to the mass production of our century, people began to get more interested in small-batch products and crafts. The cultural tradition of Japan is an emblem of the care given to objects and products, whether you talk about Ikebana, the Japanese art of arranging flowers, or the tea ceremony, which is in itself an aesthetic ritual. Handmade in Japan shows the diversity of Japan’s crafts through a dense photographic documentation of traditional workshops in different regions of the country, through the eye of the photographer Irvin Wong.

The publication comes in two language versions. In addition to the English one, there’s a German edition titled Das Streben nach Vollkommenheit. Japanisches Handwerk zwischen Tradition und Moderne. They were designed by Ilona Samcewicz-Parham, who chose to play on some symbolic features of Japan, especially for colors: the pale pink cover reminds us immediately of the pink cherry tree blossoms for which Japan is so famous. The book’s layout assigns a lot of space to margins, taking attention not to charge the pages with too much information, in order to keep this specific balance between plain and forms you find in most traditional Japanese creations. The book is set in three typefaces: Cardinal from Production Type, ParaType’s version of Futura by Paul Renner, and Yu Mincho designed by Toriumi Osamu from Jiyu-kobo for Japanese texts. The design of Cardinal is at the same time a synthesis of Garamont and Granjon inspired typefaces and a new step towards digital aesthetics: this mix puts the typeface out of time, and thus follows the pure aesthetics of Japanese arts and crafts, barely touched by the passing of time. Cardinal is also lighter than most typefaces of this kind and makes a good combination with the Japanese characters of Yu Mincho.

The Ideal City: Exploring Urban Futures is a book about sustainable urbanism, edited by Space10, designed by Ilona Samcewicz-Parham’s studio Spilenka, and published by Gestalten.

As technology and urban life edge ever closer, The Ideal City explores the ambitious actions and initiatives being brought to life across the globe to meet tomorrow’s demand in clever, forwarding-thinking ways. From pedestrian infrastructure to housing, the book uncovers what is being discussed at the forefront of urbanism through expert essays and profiles.

In March 2019, gestalten published Kitchen Living: Kitchen Interiors for Contemporary Homes — a beautiful, 256 page book that explores how the kitchen has transformed into a space where humans connect and share experiences.

For the book design, Mona Osterkamp chose Ogg Display as the primary typeface for headers and pull quotes which surround stunning shots of kitchen interiors and redesigns for the reader’s inspiration. Ogg is complemented with Nimbus Roman for the body copy and Aktiv Grotesk for sub-headers.

The typeface used on the packaging is Canary, designed by Mark Frömberg during his undergrad studies at HTW Berlin, initiated by an assignment in Jürgen Huber’s type design class.

[…] many fonts are not suited to be used with most editorial illustration artwork. Either they don’t fit or they even reject each other. Hence, I tried to design a typeface that can sit next to as many illustration styles as possible.

Frömberg lists many sources of inspiration for Canary, including italic manuscripts and writing samples by Arrighi, Fugger, Granjon, Manutius and Tagliente. I wouldn’t be surprised if a good deal can also be ascribed to an admiration of Underware’s body of work, though. The partly connected, slightly left-leaning cursive with a brush-lettered feel merges several of the features that this trailblazing type collective has employed, without being too close a follower of any of their typefaces in particular. Canary comes in six weights equipped with small caps, dozens of ligatures, titling and swash alternates, as well as catchwords.

One year after the release of Canary, the native Berliner moved to The Hague to enroll in the Type and Media master program at the Royal Academy of Arts — the same place where the Underware members had met in 1998. His graduate project Shequalin, “a text typeface designed for sophisticated humoristic literature and all kinds of typographic shenanigans”, is mouth-watering. It’s not available yet — Frömberg is wise enough to know that “typefaces need to ripe and mature over long time” — but I am already looking forward to the release of Shequalin, or other works by this talented chap.
