Think – speak – listen: A portrait of an artist’s work

The act of hearing the sound of spoken language forms a fluid, sometimes fractured act of change in time. At the same time, orality and the human voice are situated in space and thus create new places. This publication brings to the fore the performative character of the human voice and the unifying, spatial quality of sound and presents works by the artist Ricarda Denzer from the last ten years.

All photographs, both in the book and of the book itself, were taken by Michael Giefing. The book cover consists of a folded poster.

Ricarda Denzer – ganz ohr / all ears was among Austria’s fifteen Most Beautiful Books of 2024.

The Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Public Service and Sports (BMKOES) and the Main Association of the Austrian Book Trade (HVB) jointly organize the competition “Die schönsten Bücher Österreichs”. A jury of experts evaluates the submitted books and selects fifteen of them the most beautiful books in Austria of the past year.

One of the featured books is the specimen for Morion by David Einwaller, the same typeface that studio Sensomatic/Christine Zmölnig chose to use throughout the catalog.

Our recently founded Vienna based design bureau Hazod Schlagintweit is focused on projects in the fields of art, culture and industry. We create visual identities, books and magazines – which led us to work on self-initiated book projects. After doing a redesign for Austrias biggest food magazine in 2016 we came up with the idea of a magazine that also dealt with this topic but in a more authentic and edgy way.

In the publication named Salz (“Salt”), various graphic designers and artists are dealing with the topic of salt. As a result different interpretations were formed and embedded in stories about places, nature, people and the far-reaching topic of culinary art. Salt is not just a declaration of love for the raw material that gives the food the necessary flavor, but can also be seen as a metaphor for the flavor of life itself.

The two-part publication has two different screen printed covers. The aesthetics of the book are very much influenced by the risography printing technique, which has led to a reduced, bright color scheme.

Schick Toikka’s Chap is applied throughout the whole book and is strongly integrated in the design as its shapes reminded us of salt crystals.

Awarded by Die Schönsten Bücher Österreichs (“The most beautiful books of Austria”) in its 2018 competition in the “special edtions and non-commercial” category.

Published as part of the 55th Biennale di Venezia 2013 and based on previously unpublished photographs, plans and correspondence from public and private archives, this scientific 540-page bilingual publication presents for the first time a comprehensive overview of Austria's participation in the art biennials since 1895.

The concept and the editorial structure are the result of a close exchange between the editorial team and the design team, ideas for the formal conception influence the order of the contents as well as vice versa. Different material properties and page formats inside the book give structure to the comprehensive and detailed information and support the structure.

The volume was recognized as one of the most beautiful books in Austria in 2013.

Korpus (Binnenland, 2009) and Helsinki (Ludwig Type, 2013) are paired in this book on movies from Lower Austria, and a price winner of “Die schönsten Bücher Österreichs 2016”. From the website of Austrian design agency Lichtwitz-Leinfellner:

The volume documents the activities of the Province of Lower Austria in the field of film promotion since 1996, and presents and reflects on numerous film projects that were shot in this state.

A book about a time-based medium with a short film on the cover: a lenticular image depicts a short sequence of a tracking shot through the landscape of Lower Austria. There are also analogies to the medium of film in the table of contents: as in a fictitious film editing program, the individual “scenes” of the book are arranged here as color-coded blocks along a timeline. The pages are numbered in minutes, seconds and frames.
