The hand drawn Outright Horror has found the perfect match in Blumhouse’s 2025 update on the classic creature feature Wolf Man.

Originally designed as a font pair, Outright Horror features a bold inky version plus a light contrasting font with a scratchy feel that the studio have employed in this title design. The trailer makes a clever use of the transformation from a classic serif – apparently Trajan – to Outright Horror in an expression of the themes contained in the Wolf Man story. On this teaser poster in landscape format, the smaller text is set in Times New Roman.

Cover for Super Video Inc.’s release of Night of the Howling Beast, which, next to The Werewolf and the Yeti and Hall of the Mountain King, is one of the English titles of the 1975 Spanish horror film La Maldicion de la Bestia, starring Paul Naschy.

The cover art with the Wookiee-like werewolf is by Basil Gogos (1929–2017), and appears to be adopted from a poster for the movie. There are not that many typeface names starting with the letter Q. This use brings together two of them: Quadrata II and Quorum.

“Kentucky After Dark” is an advertising campaign devised by indie agency Coomer, on behalf of a collective of small local Kentucky tourism boards. The campaign aims to highlight local spooky and paranormal folklore to draw people to lesser-known sites throughout the state, using a passport program. The passport contains imagery and descriptions of each location, as well as fill-in sections for participants.

The campaign's primary logo is custom-lettered by designer Jason Carne. Supporting typography on the passport is set in EFCO Colburn and Thanatos, a typeface originally designed for a horror film, with some Las Vegas Fabulous. The website additionally uses Basement Grotesque.

Artwork for the single “Slowly Through Youth” produced by Bofirax & The Bird Yellow, mixed by Bofirax, mastered by Yves Roussel and published by Au! Records. It combines an illustration by Èric Segura with the title work by Ignasi Àvila Padró.

The title takes Neue Helvetica (Linotype) and liquifies the words causing a foggy effect. The music video titles, animated by Dídac Àvila Padró, use the same typeface.

The fantasy novel series Shadowvale by Kristen Painter uses Sveva by astype fonts as title font and for the chapter headings.

The sans serif used for “best seling author” might be Avenir Next Condensed. The caps used for the author’s name are either custom drawn or from an unidentified typeface. So are the swashy seriffed letterforms that spel out “Shadowvale” in the gate shown in the illustration.

The Werewolf of Washington is a 1973 horror-comedy movie about a press secretary for the US President who becomes a werewolf and terrorizes Washington DC. A partial satire of the then-active Nixon administration, it was directed by Milton Moses Ginsberg and stars Dean Stockwell.

The most common US poster for the movie shows the title in either a manually outlined adaptation of Standard Gothic or a color-separated adaptation of its pre-outlined relative, Comstock. The secondary type is set in Helvetica and Helvetica Condensed.

Prolific book jacket designer Lawrence Ratzkin was fond of blackletter type, as well as ITC Honda, Ronné Bonder and Tom Carnase’s 1970 “grayletter” with equal parts fraktur and roman sans serif.

Ratzkin used a couple alternates for this tight lockup, including a t that I would argue is much better than ITC Honda’s default version, and which tucks neatly into the adjacent w. The standard looped k is replaced with the alternate roman form.

Unfortunately, the current digital version of ITC Honda is missing all eight of the alternates available in the original phototype version. The sample below shows what this headline would look like in the digital font. You can see why the alt t really came in handy.
