Texas Monthly’s 2021 edition of “The 50 Best BBQ Joints” features delectable food photography, not to mention some equally tasty type combinations utilizing fonts from OH no Type Co. (Beastly and Coniferous), Hoefler & Co (Chronicle and Ringside), and Pangram Pangram (Right Grotesk).

Detail: Coniferous is used for the restaurant locations. The joint’s name uses Beastly 12 Point – the smallest of Beastly’s nine optical sizes, originally intended to set quite small type.

Count down title cards, set in Right Grotesk Tight

Two similar slab serifs, combined on the cover of Big Bend. The title is set in the heaviest weight of Heinrich Jost’s Beton, the extrafett. It was copied in the U.S. by Intertype as Beton Extra Bold. While Bauer’s family included condensed weights, too, these weren’t available from Intertype. The smaller text is set in caps from Linotype’s Memphis Medium Condensed and Bold Condensed.

The book was written by Ben Haas (1926–1977) under his pen name Richard Meade. First published in 1968 by Doubleday, this is the first paperback edition, issued as Signet Brand Western (P4130) in 1970. From Lynn Munroe Books:

The Big Bend of the Rio Grande in South Texas is the setting for several of Ben’s Westerns under various pen names. One of them is Richard Meade’s BIG BEND, the story of Nora Stewart, lost in the wild country with two men who love her – a rancher named Sam Ramsay looking for his rustled horses, and the huge and powerful ex-slave named Concho.

Charley Crockett is an Americana, Country, and Blues singer/songwriter with a throwback sound. This album, Charley Crockett: Field Recordings Vol. 1, is a collection of 30 lo-fidelity tracks recorded in Mendocino County. The album artwork was designed by Alice Maule, using Lone Pine with some of its swash alternates, paired wih Antique Olive Nord.

A creative project by Landry Print Co: T-shirts, tanks and other products “designed for lovers of Denton, Texas”. The name of Denton is set in Hollie Script with a custom shade.

The slab serif used for “TEXAS”, the gothic caps for “Share the road” and the distressed Tuscan type used for “Oh No You” are yet to be identified.

A collection of “news” stories encountered on the internet by the author during two years living in Dallas, Texas. An unreliable pocket guide to Texas and Texans. Riso printed in two colours on mixed paper stocks, paired with a glossy xerox printed appendix.

Commemorative “Explore Texas Craft Beer” beer glasses to celebrate Small Business Saturday and raise money for the non-profit Texas Craft Brewers Guild.

Illustrated by Texas-based artist Alana Louise and printed by the folks at Grandstand, the design on this Libbey Heavy Base Cooler glass encapsulates the natural beauty of Texas with iconic landscapes–from Big Bend National Park in the West, to Caddo Lake and the Texas Gulf in the East. Texas flora and fauna like the famous Caprock Canyons bison herd, bluebonnets, gulf shrimp, and many more are featured along the way.

Each glass is etched on the inside with a special Texas Craft Brewers Guild logo nucleation point which increases beer’s head retention and enhances aroma.

The logo on the glass is set in Forester, and the related website also uses Rubik.

Ever since the 1974 pilot episode featuring Willie Nelson, Austin PBS affiliate KLRU’s Austin City Limits has used Douglas F. Jones’s Skin & Bones in its logotype. Currently in the midst of its 40th anniversary season, ACL is the longest-running music series in American television history.

The Austin company CS Presents has put on The Austin City Limits Music Festival every year since 2002. In 2013, the festival expanded its schedule into two consecutive weekends of musical performances.

Apparently ACL’s old set at Communications Building B on the University of Texas at Austin campus had a sizeable hexagonal rug. (Since 2011, Austin City Limits has filmed their concerts at the Moody Theater in downtown Austin, Texas.)
