Shared Tomorrows is an anthology of science fiction short stories written in collaboration. Edited by Bill Pronzini and Barry N. Malzberg, the books includes 12 stories by 24 authors.

The jacket design is by Andy Carpenter, featuring art by Gary La Sasso and Bill Farr’s Inverserif. The display typeface with the “inverse serifs” is here used in all caps, and supported by ITC Avant Garde Gothic Condensed.

Inverserif is also used on the book’s spine. The back panel of the jacket list the authors in a regular-wide style of ITC Avant Garde Gothic, with text on the inner flaps set in Times New Roman.

Fonts In Use featured other editions of this book before, see Pink Mouse for the 1973 paperback by Pocket Books and Optex for the Faber edition from 1974. This is the first edition of Beyond Apollo, published by Random House in 1972. The story about the repercussions of a failed Venus mission set in 1981 won Barry N. Malzberg (b. 1939) the inaugural John W. Campbell Memorial Award for Best Science Fiction Novel. Joachim Boaz wrote an insightful review on Science Fiction and Other Suspect Ruminations.

A two-color use of Hermann Zapf’s ornamented Saphir, paired with Bodoni Black (roman caps and italic) and an ominous Rorschach test, for the jacket of Oracle of the Thousand Hands. This edition of the early novel by Barry N. Malzberg was “published by arrangement with the Traveller’s Companion, Inc. and the Olympia Press, Inc.” and “has been especially designed and bound for the members of the Olympia Book Society”.

The title page shown below features another of Zapf’s typefaces: it’s Palatino-Kursiv, used with its swash capitals. The author name and the title are entirely set in italic swash caps. Generally considered a typographic faux pas, this stylistic device here acquires a different quality. In combination with the sumptuous frame, it passes as a nod to elaborate title pages from Renaissance book printing. Note the use of the swash J in place of F. In the German tradition, this character often has a crossbar. In North America, such a shape is understood as a script F, with all or most of the roof to the left of the stem. A strong and colourful use of Optex for the 1974 hardback edition of Beyond Apollo by Barry Malzberg, published by Faber & Faber. It's used throughout the cover for all copy, from the title (all caps) to the author (upper and lowercase), down to the logo on the spine (U&lc). The jacket design is credited to Gask.

The letter design appears to have been tweaked to include an additional colour band (pink) which is reminiscent of some of the variations of Prismania/Prink. Additionally, the capital Y and N appear to be alternates or at least non-standard.
