The Two Avant-guards?! Rhymes / Два авангарда!? Рифмы is an exhibition put on by the AZ Museum of Moscow as a part of the contemporary art festival First factory of Avant-garde. The exhibition took place at the Ivanovo Regional Museum of Art in the city of Ivanovo, Russia, which rhymed avant-garde masterpieces from the Ivanovo collection with distinguished creations by artists from the latter half of the 20th century.

Ira Koshaleva of Tuman studio was in charge of the exhibit's visual communications and used Beatrice Display as the main font for the project, including posters, catalogs, and pamphlets. The supporting sans is unidentified. [It appears to be Aeroport, see comments.]

Druk and Akzidenz-Grotesk are paired for the identity of AZ Museum. The private museum, based in Moscow, was founded by art collector and philantropist Natalia Opaleva and art curator Polina Lobachevskaya, and it is named after Anatoly Zverev.

From our interview with Sergey Lavrinenko, creative director and art director at ONY Agency:

Working on the style, we looked at the successful visual results that the museum had already achieved — for example, in the book by Igor Gurovich, — and tried to translate those into digital, preserving the scent and the flavour of the so-called second wave of Russian avant-garde.

Typographically, we were looking for something dense, with a Soviet vibe, yet convenient and contemporary. There are not many such fonts, especially narrow ones. We had already seen Druk in lots of projects by this point, but it seems to have revealed itself in a new way here. So, we have created a certain revival of Soviet informal art.

We decided to pair it with Akzidenz Grotesk — the most eclectic typeface, particularly when it comes to Cyrillic. The branchy forms in К, a slightly antique И

Free Flight, a catalogue for the eponymous exhibition at Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, has been awarded by the Society of Typographic Arts. The book, designed by Konstantin Eremenko, employs several styles of the Gauge type family.

The Free Flight show is a result of collaboration between the Moscow-based AZ Museum and the State Tretyakov Gallery. Dedicated to the creative legacy of the renowned filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky and of the Soviet Nonconformist artists, it seeks to present the non-official art of the 1960–1980s within the context of Tarkovsky’s cinematic universe.

A photographic monograph of Russian artist Anatoly Zverev, designed by Konstantin Eremenko, using Brioni Sans for the titles and the serif version of Brioni for the smaller text, and subheads. The book has been awarded at the D&AD Awards 2019 (Wood pencil), Type Directors Club Tokyo, 2019, and European Design Awards 2019 (Silver).
