How can we ensure technology serves humanity, rather than undermines it? Omidyar Network (ON), the US philanthropic organisation founded by Pierre and Pam Omidyar, challenged us to create a brand identity reflecting their commitment to embedding humanity into our digital future. With nearly $2 billion invested, ON is one of the largest philanthropic funds dedicated to guiding technological advancement towards collective power, prosperity and possibility.

Our brief was to develop an identity centred on collaboration, collective achievement and responsible innovation. We crafted a distinctive wordmark and emblem symbolising unity and strength. Rejecting typical philanthropic aesthetics, our dynamic design system was inspired by authentic human interactions, visually highlighting the vital link between people and technology. Typography was chosen to embody ON’s vision, pairing the warmth of Feijoa Medium with the future-oriented precision of F37 Lineca.

On their website, re:arc institute uses the combination of two typefaces, Romie by Margot Lévêque and Ambiant Sans by Laura Csocsán. The logo uses Ambiant Sans with slight modifications.

re:arc institute is a non-profit philanthropic association based in Copenhagen DK. Our work is made possible with funding from the Interogo Foundation.

We provide resources to an annual cohort working in diverse approaches that support architectures of planetary well-being.

The same fonts are also used for the Revision(s) website, an initiative of re:arc institute. The Revisions logo appears to be custom drawn, or from an unidentified typeface with similarities to Serous or Metaballs.

The Metcalf Foundation is highly respected for its philanthropy and support for research to inform public policy. Its latest biennial report published in 2022 addresses “What Matters Now” in the aftermath of the global pandemic. The designers collaborated closely with artist Dalbert B. Vilarino to intimately integrate their striking illustrations with their design’s bold typography and colours to amplify the urgency of Metcalf’s work over the past two challenging years. The theme is presented initially on the front cover as a question but is transformed into an emphatic statement on the back to leave readers with a message of hope and empowerment.

In addition to the printed brochure, there is an impressively elaborate mini-site that supports the content and illustrations with animations.

The Phillips Collection was founded by art collector and philanthropist Duncan Phillips in 1921. The Phillips Collection has been collecting modern and contemporary art for one hundred years. Duncan Phillips’s former home – and additions to it – in Washington’s historic Dupont Circle neighborhood provides a unique setting for the growing collection of over 5,000 works. Following Phillips’s unconventional approach to exhibitions, The Phillips Collection galleries are frequently rearranged to facilitate new conversations between artworks and fresh experiences for visitors.

The Collection website was designed under direction of Vivian Djen – Head of Editorial and Design at The Phillips Collection. The typography primary uses Elido, a humanist sans serif type family with a wide range of variations for editorial use. The tag line of the logo is set in Odile (Elido in reverse) – the serif companion of Elido. The design concept for the sans/serif superfamily draws inspiration from an experimental typeface named Charter, originally designed by the American book and type designer William Addison Dwiggins.

Jubilat Book is used for labeling the six fields of priority by Haslam Giving.

The visual identity of Haslam Giving brings together two typeface families by Darden Studio, Jubilat and Halyard. Haslam Giving is one branch of the philantropic initiatives of the Haslam Family Foundation, committed to helping children and families. Cleveland-based agency Form designed a new identity and website.

Jubilat was chosen as the display typeface. The low-contrast slab serif with compact proportions is used for headlines, intro texts, and key figures. It’s paired with Halyard Display, which can be seen in the logotype and in secondary headings. While Halyard Display wasn’t explicitly designed as a sans-serif companion to Jubilat, it shares a lot of its DNA, coming from the same designer and catering to a similar size range, and hence makes for a congenial counterpart. All smaller text, from the menu to article copy, is rendered in Halyard Text. This subfamily brings the same robust and lively qualities to the table as its display equivalent. With its more open shapes and spacing, Halyard Text is better suited for longer strips of text in reading sizes, while maintaining a consistent typographic personality.

The visual identity of Haslam Giving succeeds by combining emotive photography with a well-structured and hence easily accessible typography.

The Haslam Giving wordmark uses two contrasting weights of Halyard Display.

Jubilat is the display typeface chosen for the website of the Sawiris Foundation for Social Development. The gentle slab serif by Darden Studio is used for headlines, teasers, and intro texts. Jubilat is paired with Source Sans (body copy) and Brandon Grotesque (logo, buttons, smaller headings). The Arabic version of the website features Droid Arabic Naskh, see Noto Naskh Arabic.
