Lillian and Madison were unlikely roommates and yet inseparable friends at their elite boarding school. But then Lillian had to leave the school unexpectedly in the wake of a scandal and they’ve barely spoken since. Until now, when Lillian gets a letter from Madison pleading for her help.

Nada para ver aqui (“Nothing to see here”) by Kevin Wilson is the fifteenth publication by TAG Livros, a Brazilian surprise book subscription service / publisher. The cover typography by Túlio Cerquize is set in BadTyp by Zavier Leslie Cabarga.

Nonstop Kino is an Austrian subscription service giving access to 23 independent cinemas in Vienna, Graz, Linz, Krems, Freistadt, Salzburg and Innsbruck for a monthly fee. It’s supported by local, state and European subsidies.

Vienna based design studio Bureau F created the colourful identity packed with playful illustrations drawn in-house. It makes an unmoderated use of colorful backgrounds in the semi-pastel tones to divide its formats in rectangular zones, keeping the use of the black color for the typography and illustrations. Not an inch of white is visible.

For the logo, Bureau F went for a customised version of Droulers Italic, skillfully transforming the disconnected italic into a connected script, making the logo a one-word ligature. Titles are set in NaN Jaune Midi Black in all caps, with longer words often splits between lines, using the letters as massive black graphical / building blocks.

The secondary titling typeface, also a sans used in all caps, is Lexend in its lighter weights and with a wide letter spacing, contrasting with Jaune. The final family in use, only seen on their website so far, is Lastik, a condensed Times-inspired serif bringing some welcomed contrast with the two sans typefaces.

Fall 2023 preview

Founded in 1981, Edition Moderne is the oldest independent comic publisher in the German-speaking world and the only one in German-speaking Switzerland. In 2019, graphic designers Julia Marti and Claudio Barandun took over the baton, and introduced a new visual identity.

The logotype is set in Proto Grotesk. This “beast” (André Mora) by Production Type also serves as one of the two typefaces in the wider identity. It’s used for the website, the biannual previews in newspaper format (photos by Anne Morgenstern), and other materials. There it takes turns with Livory AS. The first serif designed by Aurèle Sack of LL Brown fame, it was released in 2023 with Lineto as LL Ivory.

For the design of Proto Grotesk, Jean-Baptiste Levée found inspiration in faces like Breite halbfette Grotesque. Shown by the Bauer & Co foundry in Germany in 1883, this raw sans has roots in early American Gothics. Sack, in turn, cites “19th century wood type and poster fonts of American origin” as the main influences for Ivory. No wonder the two typefaces go along so well. Both Ivory and Proto Grotesk exhibit a strong contrast and some eccentric details. They’re not stuck in nostalgia, though, and make for a mix that suits the contemporary, funny, and at times cheeky program of Edition Moderne quite well.

As of 2024, the publishing house is managed by Julia Marti and Marie-France Lombardo and maintains its focus on comics, graphic novels, and humor.

In 2019, the City of Zürich honored co-founder David Basler for special cultural achievements.

Sonagi is a skincare sheet mask subscription service that “brings the magic of Korean sheet masks to the UK”.

Seoul and London based K-Beauty brand Sonagi uses Instrument Serif paired with Acumin on their website and for social media posts.

Studio Chong designed the visual identity of Brewser, “the beer club that connects 120 of the nation’s best independent breweries with a growing community of curious craft explorers.”

The designs feature Meek Display by Ryan Bugden as the main typeface, supported by Basier Mono Circle by Atipo and Kern Standard by Pizza Typefaces.

The logotype and icon are based on Meek Display, customized with the help of Treintayaseis.

Born from the belief that nourishing, high quality, planet-friendly products should be available to everyone, Wholesome is the online eco-health pantry and membership that makes a difference at every step. They tasked Universal Favourite with an end-to-end brand overhaul that would reflect the innovation of their DTC offering, looking, feeling and sounding as good as the brands and products they stock.

The logo is set in Gooper, a typeface that embodies the communal spirit of its heritage (the ever-ubiquitous, retro Cooper) while bringing its own goopy, playful flair. Slight customisations were made to the w allowing it to tuck neatly under the h ascender and also to shine as a standalone icon. With its soft edges and winding curves, the mark is distinctively warm and inviting.

The typography intertwines practicality and expression. Gooper SemiCondensed is disarmingly personable with just enough charm for headers and large-scale use. Maison Neue takes out the role of best supporting typeface, providing a clean but friendly sans serif that’s ideal for smaller pops of copy. And then there’s Kale Sans Mono – the informative, matter-of-fact, typewriter-esque workhorse. Together they make for a type system that’s as rich in quality and variety as the brand they represent.

TT Trailers became the new branding typeface of pamipe pet food, one of Spain’s first home delivery feed subscriptions for pets. From Omni Design:

In our sessions to compare ourselves to the gigantic brands in the market in their clinical, youthful, friendly, sweet, familiar, childish, happy positioning... we found the solution. We had to leave the slipstream of the competition, turn the brand upside down; Pamipe needed to break with everything established, show herself as a leader; safe, authentic and light-hearted.

We helped inne express their purpose and position as a guide for women across life stages. To reflect this, we crafted a visual identity system based on the brand idea “connect with your inner rhythm” that balances scientific accuracy, bold simplicity and human warmth. Our typefaces GT America and Oceanic Text were chosen to express this balance and contrast.

About Fonts

The variable version of Grilli Type’s GT America with its precise, yet humanist features, space efficient construction and great readability make it an ideal functional typeface that works great for the text and information heavy communication inne does.

On the other hand we have Oceanic Text by Interval Type which is used for larger and more expressive brand touchpoints, it adds warmth and personality to the brand through its rounded, approachable character. Both typefaces share similar x-height, letter width and proportions, making it easy to pair them side by side, sometimes within a single sentence to highlight specific pieces of information.

Dance is a frictionless e-bike subscription service that saw its debut in Berlin in 2020. It now is also available in Hamburg, Munich, Vienna, and Paris. The company was launched by SoundCloud founders Eric Quidenus-Wahlforss and Alexander Ljung along with their friend Christian Springub, co-founder of Jimdo.

Brand identity by Kurppa Hosk. Digital brand application, UX/UI design, iOS development, and web development by MAD. TWK Everett by Nolan Paparelli is used as the main typeface throughout.

New website and identity for Fresh Fonts, designed by Kolaps from Barcelona, with web development by Reveal Studio. Fresh Fonts is an independent publishing house based in Lausanne, Switzerland. They publish a monthly newsletter featuring a curated selection of new font releases from independent type designers and small foundries from all around the world.

For the expression of the brand, we start from the idea of uniting its creative and human tone with the fresh and innovative typefaces that are put at the forefront in their newsletter, without outshining them. Through the use of vibrant colors, dynamic condensed type, and lighthearted illustrations in the form of geometrical shapes — that represent the variety of services present in the company’s offering — we managed to give the brand an affable yet bold character, illustrating its spirit and its values.

The logo is set in NB International, which is also used throughout their digital material for supporting text and main copy, including on the email newsletter. The condensed, all-caps titling font is FK Screamer, making use of its backslanted and italic styles as well, and the variable font version was used to create stunning font animations on the website.

Established in 2015, Blix was created by father and son duo, Edouard and Ariel Sterngold, with the aim to supply high quality ingredients in the home. They spotted a gap in the market creating an advanced system that is scalable, sustainable, and intuitive for everyone to use. Following extensive testing and prototypes, they created the perfect blender, ideal for at home smoothies. Blix went on to launch their product in 2019.

From designer Ariana DeLuca:

In order to resonate with Blix’s demographic and to develop a modern, playful brand, I redesigned the packaging of their cups. I hand drew 60+ custom illustrations. These illustrations denote the strongest flavor profile in each recipe.

F37 Foundry’s F37 Ginger was used during the branding and packaging process. F37 Ginger’s geometric shapes and unusual near-circular counters, makes it ideal for fun and exciting packaging.

The German company Planted is using Brûle for its logotype and communication materials. Brûle was designed by Andrei Robu for Typeverything, and the identity was designed by LIT Create:

Planted actively fights climate change by helping individuals offset their own carbon footprint with a monthly subscription that plants trees and supports compensation projects. We proudly support the team and their mission from the very start of the organization and the planting of the first tree at the beginning of 2021.

Toronto-based creative agency Quake developed a branding and content system for Goodfood, Canada’s leading meal kit subscription. The delivery vans, boxes, and bags were redesigned to be as tasty and colorful as the food inside. In addition, different versions were created to combat the bias that meal kits didn’t offer variety.

The various brand assets and a modular content system allow Goodfood to easily publish across multiple channels without having to redesign the layout, reset the type or recrop the assets. A grid system was created with images and type retaining their relational sizes to be scaled and used in a “plug and play” manner. The branding system uses a customized version of Oldschool Grotesk developed in collaboration with Quake.

Mr. Dee Still is a shoppable magazine and a website dedicated to the world of beverages.

The initiative aims to tell the stories of spirits’ producers, the most important cocktail bars in the world and the trends that characterize them. The goal is to make consumers more aware of their consumption of beverage products.

There are more than 500 references on the website to date, and the offer consists of a range mainly made of premium distillates, but also of small producers distributed by family businesses.

Editor Condensed is the main typeface, occasionally paired with its Editor’s regular width styles. The accompanying sans serif is Acumin.

MyBudget provides debt assistance and budget management for individuals in the form of programs and apps. Company founder Tammy Barton worked at a debt collecting service and felt things could be better:

“I could see that traditional banking wasn’t helping people. If you want to get ahead, to live your best life, you need a different set of tools. You need a system and support that helps you plan for the future—to look ahead, not behind you,” says Tammy.

The company website uses Ciutadella as the main typeface, paired with DM Serif Display for selected headlines. The typefaces for the MyBudget logo appear to be Rage Italic and a customized FF Sari (or Barmeno) Italic.

Hungry Harvest is a food delivery service based in the US, working directly with farmers to deliver surplus or unwanted produce that would otherwise go to waste.

From branding consultancy BBMG:

Hungry Harvest was founded on the simple belief that every American deserves to eat healthy — and everything grown deserves to be eaten. Since 2014, they’ve partnered with farmers and suppliers to fight food waste and hunger by turning rescued fruits and vegetables into delicious boxes of fresh ingredients delivered to customers’ doorsteps.

Rebranded in 2021, Hungry Harvest’s identity makes extensive use of MD Nichrome in headings and subtitles — a modified version also appears in the logo. Elsewhere in the brand, Vulf Sans is used in mockups and instagram posts, with Cabin and Neue Helvetica Extended appearing on the website.

TOTM is Tesco’s first organic femcare brand that offers “planet-friendly period care”. The website was designed by White Sky Creative. Headlines are set in IvyPresto, paired with Sofia for text and Termina for smaller headings.

In 2016, Communion Records launched the Singles Club. Every three months subscribers received a limited edition 7″ single on vinyl from one of the Communion artists, at a discounted price and accompanied by an exclusive print. The purely typographic artwork for the initial run was designed by SEEN, employing “die cut sleeves so the label art messes with the cover text. Each new single will be a new colorway.” – @seenstudio

The “impossible” bicolor sans probably is Bron. Released by Jeremia Adatte in 2014, Bron is a faithful revival of Bronisław Zelek’s Zelek, originally issued by Mecanorma for dry transfer lettering in 1972. The digital version comes in separate layer styles that can be combined for chromatic effect. I should add that SEEN is known for digging into predigital typefaces, so I can’t rule out that what we’re seeing is (their own digitization of) the original Zelek. [edit: It’s Dick Pape’s freebie digitization, see Jeremia’s comment.] The label text is set in another revival: Font Bureau’s Bureau Grot is a compilation and extension of the various numbered or generically named grotesques by British foundry Stephenson Blake.

for the visual identity of this startup, Hollywood-based branding agency Truffl picked GT Walsheim, used from logo to body text, plus Neue Droschke – used in all caps for headlines, and in upper- + lowercase for certain bits of short copy. For some reason, the menu items in the navigation bar are set in Neue Helvetica.
