Sorry! is a popular board game in which players try to travel around the board with their pieces (called pawns) faster than any other player. The game was first published in 1929 in England by W.H. Storey & Company and in later years was introduced to America by Parker Brothers. Today it is wholly owned and distributed by Hasbro.

Since 1972, its logo typeface is Advertisers Gothic. It’s bold and brash, like the city it comes from, Chicago. Advertisers Gothic was designed by the accomplished German-American matrix engraver, Robert Wiebking, for the Western Type Foundry in 1917.

2005 edition. “The Game of Sweet Revenge” uses Platelet. “Plan a Family Game Night” is set in Marydale.

This edition of the Monopoly board game is from 1985, and was sold by Parker Brothers in the U.S. It has the logo in the Kabel typeface that has been used since the 1930s. “Parker Brothers Real Estate Trading Game” on the box is set in ITC Korinna. The deed cards use a combination of Copperplate Gothic and Futura. Kabel is also used for the gameboard text. The booklet is set in Palatino.

Probe is a board game for 1–4 players, “introduced in the 1960s by Parker Brothers. It is reminiscent of the simple two-person game Hangman, whose object is to guess a word chosen by another player by revealing specific letters. Probe […] introduces additional game elements that increase the levels of both skill and chance. Like Hangman, each player has a secret chosen word. But unlike Hangman, the game ends when the last word, not the first word, is revealed. All players remain in the game until the end. It was created by Ted Leavitt and licensed by him to Parker Brothers.” [Wikipedia]

The Probe game pictured here was released in 1976. It features (a) Bookman Swash for the primary logo, using swashes for the P, r, and b. The words “Parker Brothers Game of Words” above the main logo are set in ITC Avant Garde Gothic Extra Light, and its Regular weight is used on the bottom of the box.

Q*bert is a classic arcade game. First published by Gottlieb in 1982, it has been ported to numerous platforms. The logo uses Cooper Black in yellow letters with a red outline, set on a bouncing baseline. The Q has been customized – by default, this letter has a rather peculiar form in Cooper Black. The asterisk (*) is taken from ITC Zapf Dingbats. It has later been assigned a dedicated Unicode, as Teardrop-Spoked Asterisk (✻). The Gottlieb logo appears to be custom, with similarities to Handel Gothic.

The classic Parker Brothers Ouija board is only one of hundreds of “talking boards” produced since the late 1800s, but it is the version most familiar to today’s Americans. The board uses lettering (not type), referencing the handtooled Antique Tuscan styles from some of William Fuld’s original boards of the 1930s and ’40s.

So there is no example of a font in use on this iconic board, but the packaging of these games often used type, and went through many variations over the years. This 1972 edition captures the otherworldly (or “exotic”) spirit of Dante (Lettergraphics), with its slab top and flared bottom.
