For the playoffs and Super Bowl season, KFC Mexico took the NFL experience to the next level. As part of the NFL’s Global Markets Program, an initiative to build fanbases outside the U.S., it opened several NFL-themed restaurants.

A key element in the ambiance was the neon graphic pieces, designed to immerse fans in a vibrant and energetic atmosphere.

One of the biggest challenges of the project was adapting the Burpee typeface for use in neon signage. This involved meticulous work on optimizing curves, adjusting intersections, and ensuring uniform stroke thickness to guarantee proper light distribution and impeccable readability.

The result: a striking graphic system that not only reinforced the visual identity of the campaign but also created an immersive environment where the excitement of the game could be felt in every detail.

The featured teams are the San Francisco 49ers, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Kansas City Chiefs.

Ticket stubs for the Super Bowl VIII which was played on January 13, 1974, at Houston’s Rice Stadium and ended in a 24–7 win for the Miami Dolphins over the Minnesota Vikings.

“Super Bowl VIII” is shown in linked letters from Yagi Bold. Even the Roman numerals were connected. The name of the location is set in contoured caps from Friz Quadrata, integrated into the illustration by Peter Palombi. Information at the bottom is in Helvetica. The seat info at the top appears to use News Gothic and Alternate Gothic. The flag in 1 is a little different – maybe it’s a version for special numbering machines.

MegaTech was a UK video game magazine dedicated to the Sega Mega Drive ("Sega Genesis" in North America), which was published from December 1991 to July 1995. The first issue was edited by Paul Glancey, with Jeff Zie as art editor. Glancey and Zie had previously produced The Complete Guide to Mega Drive.

The logo uses Modula Serif, which is also used elsewhere on the cover and for some of the interior text. (This logo was retained until issue 17, when a new logo was adopted.) Oakland and Oblong also form part of the magazine's identity. All three of these fonts were designed by Zuzana Licko.

Text fonts include Memphis, Helvetica, ITC Kabel, and Century Expanded. An unidentified Japanese font is used on the cover for the word メガテケ (Megateke).

Gamay is the typeface chosen for the promotion of Betr.app, a digital platform that offers a blend of fantasy sports and microbetting.

The Gamay font family was designed by Viktoriya Grabowska, with art direction by Eben Sorkin, and released earlier this year. When we were putting Gamay through the hoops at Darden Studio, we had many potential applications and industries in mind. To be honest, sports bets was not among them, but here we are. Did the designers search for a gambling font and stumbled upon Gamay because its name starts with “gam”? We knew that font naming is crucial! In any case, Gamay does look slick in the graphics. With its sharply defined shapes and gestural details, it plays its part in building a fresh and facetious brand image.

Betr makes use of several of Gamay’s six widths, in various weights, and exclusively in all caps. The straightforward sans with the characteristic vertically cut terminals in letters like C G S serves in many of Betr’s social media posts. In the promotional images on the App Store, Gamay is used in the ExtraBold weight, with tightened spacing, and supported by Inter.

The Got Back tour was McCartney's first series of live shows since 2019, and runs from 2022 through 2023. The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in the cancellation of the final European leg of his previous tour in 2020.

The setlist for the Got Back tour consists of over 30 songs, including songs by the Beatles and Wings, as well as songs from McCartney's solo career.

Alias Cactus is used for Paul McCartney type, with either Akzidenz Grotesk or Glaser Stencil, and various secondary typefaces depending on the venue. Cactus is also used for headline type for the Tour programme.

New Heights is an NFL show giving fans unfiltered access into the memories and lifestyles of Kelce brothers: Jason and Travis.

The wordmark (based on Domaine Display Narrow), color and typographic system are designed to pair modern nostalgia and heritage, as the Kelce brothers are strongly tied to their hometown Cleveland Heights, where they grew up with dreams of turning pro.

Kenny Stabler, notable for his 10-year career with the NFL’s Oakland Raiders, is featured here with his Houston Oilers team helmet – placing the date of this ad in 1980 or 1981 – when Stabler was with the Houston team.

Starting in 1979 (and continuing throughout the 1980s) the Motorcycle Industry Council launched their “Ride Aware. Show You Care.” public relations campaign [source]. Print media ads featured celebrities, sports figures, and motorcycle enthusiasts of the day, including Charles Bronson, Caitlyn Jenner, Lorenzo Lamas, Kent Howerton, Bobby and Al Unser, and American NFL quarterback Kenny Stabler.

Some of those ads, like this example from 1980/81, shouted “WHO CARES?” in large print across the top third of the page followed by a quote from the featured spokesperson warning the reader about the dangers of riding a motorcycle without protective gear. To quote Kenny Stabler from the ad:

I’d be laughed out of the stadium. Or carried out. Yet I see a lot of cyclists riding without even a helmet.

“Who Cares?” and “Ride Aware. Show You Care.” feature Futura Extra Bold Condensed Oblique. The body copy is set in Century Oldstyle Regular and Italic. The wordmark of the Motorcycle Industry Council uses Microgramma Bold Extended.

F37 Judge by F37 Foundry is used by Studio Freight for the official online merch store of Patrick Mahomes II, American football quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Studio Freight employed F37 Judge Bold Condensed as a headline font, using large typography across the site, making it impressionable and modern. F37 Judge has been paired with GT Pressura by Grilli Type for the menu and all smaller text.

For Super Bowl 50 in February 2016, CBS introduced a new score bug using FF DIN. It remained in use for NFL broadcasts until Super Bowl 55 in February 2021.

The wordmark used by American football team Indianapolis Colts from 1984 to 2019 is based on a French Clarendon. Together with the colors blue and white and the iconic horseshoe logo, it formed the visual identity of the team. The horseshoe goes back all the way to 1953, when the team was founded as Baltimore Colts, and named for Baltimore’s history of horse breeding and racing. The franchise relocated to Indianapolis on March 29, 1984.

The exact typeface version is unidentified, and chances are that several different ones (as well as custom drawn interpretations) were in use across the many applications. Playbill is similar, but has a different spine in S. Among digital options, Buffalo Western, Wood Factory or MPI French Clarendon come close. In 2020, the Colts introduced a new wordmark.

Addendum to the post about the first volume of Touchdown Illustrated from 1973.

In 1977, the designers of Touchdown Publications still relied on catchy faces from Letraset’s range of rubdown type. For the cover announcing the 1977 edition of the Oregon rivalry game, they went with Vexier. This “impossible” design by Christof Gassner offered the possibility to embed the teams’ colors in the letterforms; green and yellow for the Ducks and orange with white for the Beavers.

#1 Pacific 8 Conference Football ’73 ft. ITC Busorama

Touchdown Illustrated is an American college football magazine by Touchdown Publications, Inc. It was started in 1973 as the official publication of the Pacific 8 Conference and its member universities. In its first year, Touchdown Illustrated simultaneously published nine issues, all edited by Ralph M. Grady and David A. Duncan. No. 1 covered the Pacific 8 Conference in general. The other ones were dedicated to the eight university teams.

For the covers and the headlines, each issue uses a different display typeface or two. Most of the featured faces had been released in the years before. All of them were included in Letraset’s range of typefaces for dry transfer lettering.

While the former relies on the bold and strong Thorowgood, the typeface used for the latter might have been chosen for its name: Americana for an American (football) saga. In this regards, the cover of the Penguin edition is the synthesis: Pioneer is a weighty display face and also has a quintessentially American name.
