The black beyond collective’s exhibition _origins is a beautiful XR experience and new media art exhibition which seeks to “reimagine Black femme futures,” as the designer and the collective’s founding director jazsalyn describes.

One look into _origins and your mind immediately unravels, immersing itself into an intellectual and wholly-enriching experience.

Inspired by the cosmic terrains of Octavia Butler’s landscapes and the primordial pools of the Danakil Depression give, the virtual exhibition gives life to the visceral and amorphous realm of _origins. The show regards femme energy as eternal. Referring to the emergence of life through the femme spirit, a metaphysical energy which exceeds three-dimensional and binary form.

Typographic designs balance organic lifeforms with elegance, pairing a 3D-custom logotype inspired by the Danakil Depression’s sulfuric microbes, along with the graceful and slender Apoc (Blaze Type) and a more exaggerated and calligraphic Ogg Display (Sharp Type).
