A striking print ad for the Dick Smith CAT, published in the May 1984 release of the magazine Electronics Australia. The Dick Smith CAT was an Apple II clone created by retailer Dick Smith, a chain of Australian electronics retail stores.

The headline “Only $699!” uses Helvetica Inserat, catching the viewer’s eye with bright red, emboldened text that leaps out from the page. Helvetica Inserat was designed by Arthur Ritzel and was first released in 1966 or 1969 by Stempel.

The slogan “Our CAT eats Apples!” uses Times New Roman. Times New Roman was designed by Stanley Morison and Victor Lardent, and was first released in 1931 by Monotype.

The mail-in information header and form use Helvetica. Helvetica was designed by Max Miedinger and Eduard Hoffmann, and was first released in 1957 by Haas under the name Neue Haas Grotesk.

Apple Music Chill is a radio station launched in December 2024, designed to provide listeners with a continuous flow of relaxing music across various genres. The station aims to offer a sanctuary of sound, helping listeners unwind and find calm throughout their day.

Programming includes ‘mindful moments’, brief interludes intended to encourage presence and relaxation. These programs explore how music can serve as a tool for focus and mental well-being. It used Raum, the new experimental display typeface by Justin Sloane and Huw Williams, characterized by its distinctive inktrap design.

GOZU II is the first attempt to implement a fighting game on Apple Vision Pro, featuring innovative camera movement tailored for Apple Vision Pro headsets. Enter the ruthless tournament of GOZU II, where only the cunning survive in a relentless struggle for supremacy. As a part of large Tekken fanbase, the tournament is filled with a lot of spicy details. The toughest AAA fighters face off against rivals, equipped with 3D scanned shoes, custom clothing replicas, and face masks. In the construct room, minimal architecture serves as the arena for visceral combat. Muzzle harnesses the power of Houdini, ZBrush, Substance Painter, and Unreal Engine 5 to create an unparalleled combat experience.

Graphics for International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month used by Apple in the App Store, Podcasts, TV+, Books, and Music. Feature stories and highlights honour powerful female voices in various Apple applications.

The typeface used for headlines is Spektra, designed by Alja Herlah and Krista Likar, published by Type Salon. Design by illustrator and artist Meredith Schomburg together with Jelly.

Omnes is the typeface used for the Shazam logo.

Originally launched in 2002 and owned by Apple since 2018, Shazam is an app that can identify music and other audio. By 2011, it had become the most downloaded iOS app of all time. It was then that the Brand Union was commissioned to develop a new visual identity. Designer Dana Killinger collaborated with Sam Becker, overseen by Wally Krantz who was Worldwide Creative Director at the time. They chose Omnes Bold, but used it with a twist: the wordmark mixes capitals with lowercase a’s brought to the same height.

The new look was unveiled in January 2012. This means that the logo featuring Omnes turned ten years this month – happy anniversary!

Apart from the logo, Omnes was also used in an advertising campaign. “Discover. Experience. Share.” is set in Omnes Light.

The Scrapbook application from Mac OS 7.0.1 (1991) uses Susan Kare’s pixel font Toronto for its introduction. Included in a collection of apps designed to make the system feel more like a physical desk (called Desktop Accessories, or DAs, in computing), this digital scrapbook could store text, images, and sound clips. It was included in every Mac OS revision until Mac OS 9.1.

The OS itself is set in Chicago, as was the norm for Mac operating systems until Charcoal became the default in 1997.

With the release of the Apple-1 computer in 1976, Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs produced various manuals for their first computer. The “Apple-1 Operation Manual” shown in the example differs from the other manuals in that it uses IBM Executive Modern, a proportional typewriter font for the IBM Executive for the interior, while the other manuals use either proper typesetting (“Apple-1 Cassette Interface”) or a non-proportional typewriter (“Preliminary Apple-1 Basic Users Manual”; the apostrophe in “Users” is missing in the original version of the manual).

The fonts used on the cover are Volta for the title and Helvetica for the address printed below the title.

October 3rd 2020 marked the 30th anniversary of the German reunification. Apple Germany celebrates the milestone by presenting Gesichter Deutschlands (“Faces or Germany”) during the month October. Tech/business website W&V reports (translated):

The “Faces of Germany” campaign will present specially curated playlists, book, film and podcast recommendations until October 31. In addition, Apple introduces German app developers, “who have changed our lives with their apps”. The corresponding features with all their content can be found in iTunes. A corresponding special page was also put live on the Apple website.

As noticed by type designer Christoph Koeberlin, the corresponding artwork pairs collage illustrations with texts set in his Fabrikat Kompakt typeface.

Digger is a Moscow-based online publication about “the future that is already here”, focusing on technology, devices, people and how they interact. Made by professional journalists, articles on gadgets, social networks, virtual reality, apple devices, robots and the Internet of Things are on the agenda.

The Cyrillics of the extended Halvar Breitschrift are used for subheadings and quotes paired with the bold and strong Mittelschrift for headlines. Halvar is “an industrial sans with nods to typefaces based on blunt geometry like DIN 1451” (v–fonts.com). Ilya Ruderman, Yury Ostromentsky, and Maria Doreuli consulted on the Cyrillic. Body copy is set in IBM Plex Sans, a design that has similar squarish moments and an engineered appeal also found in Halvar.

One of Apple’s latest ads for iPhone features nature photography set to heavy metal music (Last Rites by Megadeth) and closing with two lines of copy. In the first line, “Mother” appears to break into pieces as it morphs from San Francisco, Apple’s identity typeface, to Shatter, Vic Carless’ clever modification of Helvetica which was very popular for Letraset back in the 1970s and ’80s, and is still one of the more effective manifestations of hardcore energy in a typeface.

According to Wikipedia, Contacts is the first macOS or iOS app to use San Francisco Compact Rounded, a variant of Apple’s system type family which was previously seen only on watchOS. It’s used in the placeholder monogram for contacts that don’t have a photo. The rest of the type is set in San Francisco, the standard type for macOS.

Apple goes non-San Francisco and even went for Optimo’s types. The newly introduced Spotlight feature in Apple’s News app uses both Display and Text styles from François Rappo’s Practice, alongside Mark Simonson’s Proxima Nova.

Pentagram:

Designed by Apple in California is a new book that chronicles 20 years of Apple design. This remarkable body of work is expressed through 450 photographs of past and current Apple products, from 1998’s iMac through 2015’s Apple Pencil. The book also documents the materials and techniques used by Apple’s design team over two decades of innovation.

Pentagram’s Luke Hayman and team assisted Apple in the design of the book, the first to be produced and published by the technology company. Working closely with Apple’s Chief Design Officer, Jonathan Ive, and the Industrial Design team, Pentagram supported Apple in their goal to create a book worthy of the company’s extraordinary legacy.

Oh, and it also costs $299.

Asphalt is one of the headline typefaces used for the Memories feature in Apple iOS10.

The geometric letterforms on the left are inspired by Milton Glaser’s Baby Teeth — without any counters, as seen in this Photostat version. Its Pac-Man C has been replaced by a semicircle, or rather a semistadium. I couldn’t ID the middle one. The angular script on the right is Kyle Wayne Benson’s Millie Bold in all-caps, with the alternate S and a few mods.

San Francisco Compact was designed specifically for the Apple Watch. In the same genre as Neue Helvetica, which has long been Apple’s choice for system fonts, this typeface has larger apertures, flatter sides, and looser spacing, making for a more legible experience overall, especially for the small, glanceable type on a watch display.

San Francisco has a vertically-centered contextual alternate colon that appears when placed between numerals.

The Activity app uses a special rounded version of San Francisco.

As far as I know, this is the first time Apple has used their new San Francisco family as webfonts. Apple Music is also SF’s first use outside the Watch app/OS/logo and 2015 MacBook keyboard. There are two subfamilies of San Francisco. This is Compact, the narrower version intended for the Watch display. I hope they’ll continue to use SF Compact for stuff like this because they own it — making it much more distinctive than Myriad. It’s also more interesting than the standard San Francisco family, which departs less from the Helvetica it replaces.

The Apple Watch app that comes bundled with iOS 8.2 (besides being annoyingly impossible to delete) gives us the first preview of how San Francisco might look as an iOS system font. Works for me.

There are still traces of Neue Helvetica in the app — strangely it is used for the small stuff, for which San Francisco is much better suited. But it does offer a comparison of the two families on one screen where it’s easy to see San Francisco’s simplified, more compact forms and looser spacing.
