Harmony Records HS-11350, “a product of Columbia Records”

A phototype adaptation of Nesbitt’s Gothic of 1837 seems to have been a go-to font for Columbia Records during their 1960s heyday – you’ll find plenty of uses, from Dylan to the Byrds to Jeff Beck as you flip through used record stores.

According to Wikipedia, Columbia revived the name Harmony Records as an imprint of budget-priced record albums and compilations – which ultimately proved so popular they acquired and reissued records from other companies, including Warner Bros. and Reprise.

This album, Christmas with the Everly Brothers, was previously issued by Warner Bros. as WS 1483 in 1962, with fanciful circus-style type. For the Columbia-Harmony reissue shown here, it used their trusty Gothic.

The Magic of Doris Day is a 1970 album by Doris Day released on Harmony Records. All-lowercase Blippo is used for her name and title with the i being modified with a flower on top. Song titles are set in Futura, arranged at the left and right. No cover designer has been credited.

Encore is the title of an album by the piano duo Ferrante & Teicher, released in 1970 on the Harmony Records label. Originally released in 1960 with a different cover and titled Themes From Broadway Shows, it features arrangements of show tunes from musicals like The Music Man, Gypsy, and Bye, Bye Birdie. Two sizes of Bookman are used for setting the titles, artist name, and song list. The cover photo is credited to Don Hunstein who may have been responsible for the typography as well.

In the 1960s, CBS/Columbia Records released dozens of albums by easy listening band leader, Percy Faith. Many of the covers featured a trendy new typeface, often (if not always) supplied by New York’s top headline phototype shop, Photo-Lettering, given that many of the styles were available exclusively from PLINC – for their first few years, at least.

This 1970 release of Younger Than Springtime was issued by CBS’s budget labels, Harmony Records and Columbia Special Products. The typeface is the brand new Torino Italic Swash, Photo-Lettering’s ornamental version of the early-19th-century didone, which didn’t appear in a major PLINC catalog until 1971. See the P from “Percy” and the Y from “Younger” matched in this sample from Alphabet Thesaurus Vol. 3 (1971):

Within a few years, another phototype firm – likely Castcraft – caught on to the idea that Torino italic, with its sparkling contrast and ball terminals, was well suited for embellishments. Their bulkier, stubbier version isn’t as elegant as Photo-Lettering’s, but it has lowercase swashes that the original doesn’t have, and still packs a pretty punch. “The Toreador Brass” is an alias of the Torero Band that, according to Discogs, was a “British group of studio musicians, imitating the style of Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass, […] led by Alan Moorhouse”. The album was first released on Music For Pleasure in 1968.

For this 1969 U.S. release on Harmony, a budget label by Columbia Records, the unknown designer specified a festive setting using Renaissance.

This ornamented and shaded Tuscan was shown by William H. Page & Co in a 1874 specimen, including chromatic versions, see below. I’m aware of two phototype adaptations: Headliners had it under the name MP 330 as part of the Morgan Press Collection, and Solotype carried it as Rondell. Troubador JNL is a digital interpretation.
