In recent years, the prayer hour Freie Zeit from Worms, Germany, has been a spiritual space to catch a breath in the midst of everyday life. Irgendwo ein Anfang (German for “Somewhere a beginning”) is its book form: just as authentic and unconventional, but small and light enough to fill any jacket pocket with selected prayers from the two initiators and the community.

The lilac-colored cover cloth, the dark blue embossing foil and printing ink and plenty of white space in the layout create a calm, relaxed atmosphere. The prayers are set in Edita, accompanied by a framing story set in Pecita. This story actually begins with the book title on the front cover – where it’s also visualised by a never-ending line – and runs through the pages as a common thread, only ending on the back cover. It literally frames the prayers on every spread and allows them not only to be read at will, but also page by page. Every now and then, variations in the layout provide moments of surprise.
