The first version of Rave Generator, released in 2014

Rave Generator by Wavosaur is a rompler, a VST plugin for Mac, Windows and Linux, containing many of the classic sounds of early 1990s rave/hardcore. Most of the included samples sound very good and there’s already plenty of top producers across all genres using Rave Generator within their productions.

In reference to Thunderdome, the VST uses Pritchard for its logo. The fonts used for menus and buttons are yet to be identified.

The textures design is also inspired by the logo Thunderdome type design by Victor Feenstra

Rave Generator version 2, 2017

Track cover art for the 2020 album SATELLITE etc by Baltimore-based rapper and producer beardy. The art direction is inspired by ’90s Generation-X CD covers, experiences on the early Internet, and y2k techno-optimism.

Space Grotesk and its older monospaced cousin (used in the little “BEARDY” logo) provide a dose of modernity to clarify that the work is looking back on the 2000s from the present and not simply emulating them whole cloth. We discussed a lot of directions, all balancing the vibes of growing up online, dealing with broken connections both digital and personal and the twin lost arts of physical music media and software packaging.

FF Screen Matrix works double duty conceptually. Sure, it evokes ideas of “cyberspace” and technology, but it also evokes memories of a time when those were new ideas.

When reviewing the finals for these we realized they look “small”; almost like Minidiscs or some other proprietary music format that kids would be encouraged to collect and trade.

The covers are based on a simple two-column layout; elements can move up or down but not horizontally. The stickers, like a real sticker, are slapped on in “random” locations not constrained by the grid.

Title based on Aller Display, subtitle set in Savoye, author credits in Futura (softcover) and Myriad (hardcover). Blurb on the back uses Delius.

As the Promotions Director for Washington University's Social Programming Board (SPB), I designed all promotional materials for the biannual outdoor concert named “WILD” (Walk In Lay Down). This included posters, Snapchat geofilters, backstage passes, and the social media artist reveal campaign and subsequent posts.

For my second round of designing WILD promotions I wanted to explore the common associations we have with the word “wild” such as wild animals (and therefore fur. True to its name, the day of the WILD concert at WashU is wild: students drink, let loose, and celebrate classes being finished for the semester.

QuikTrip makes use of Monthoers in headlines/callouts on their website – an effective choice for fun and engaging typography. The main text typeface used here is Oswald.

Digital album artwork for the LCD Soudsystem singles "Call The Police" and "American Dream".

The covers for Mario R. García’s ebook on iPad news app design use Canto Pen. The overall design is by Joe Zeff Design, and Reed Reibstein set the cover type. Read more about the project on garciamedia.com.

The iOS version of the Instagram app uses Freight Sans for large type (usually centered headlines) and the system’s Neue Helvetica for everything else. On Android, that system’s Roboto is used along with Freight.

The Instagram website uses Proxima Nova for all text with Neue Helvetica as a fallback.

The current logo, which replaced a sloppy Billabong-based mark in May 2013, is custom lettering by Mackey Saturday. The icon sports a little “Insta” badge in Chunk.
