Supernature is the third studio album by English electronic music duo Goldfrapp, released on 17 August 2005 by Mute Records. The album received generally favourable reviews, with most critics complimenting its blend of pop and electronic music. It debuted at number two on the UK Albums Chart with first-week sales of 52,976 copies, and has been certified platinum by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI). Supernature has sold one million copies worldwide.

The design is credited to Mat Maitland at Big Active, with art direction by Alison Goldfrapp, Mat Maitland, and Gerard Saint.

Matra is used for the album title and track listing, while all other text is in ITC Avant Garde Gothic. The Goldfrapp logo appears to be custom drawn.

Expletive Script was designed by Jonathan Barnbrook and Marcus Leis Allion and released in 2001 by Virus Fonts. It’s a unique blend of threadlike monolinearity, the simplified circular forms of engineers’ stencils, and connected chrome scripts. The only time I’ve ever seen it in use is on Andreas Dorau’s long-awaited seventh album from 2005.

Both weights are used: Expletive Script Light is not only thinner, but also possesses more pronounced extenders than the Regular. The oscillating lines are created by combining the Regular with the Alternate cuts — in latter, some characters drop below the baseline. This nervous typography is a fitting counterpoint to the disturbing photography of Dorau and his wild boar alter ego.

The interlinear ligature of Andreas Dorau’s initials resembles the infinity symbol (∞). It is a custom creation and not included in the font.

“See You” and “The Meaning Of Love” are the fourth and fifth UK singles by Depeche Mode, both released in early 1982 and included on their second studio album A Broken Frame.

Depeche Mode is set in Gillies Gothic, a typeface that was originally released by the Bauer Type Foundry in 1935. It was also known as Flott (“speedy”) in Germany. Letraset had adopted both original weights and added two more styles, Extra Bold (Fred Sack, 1980) and Extra Bold Shaded (Philip Kelly, 1982).

For See You, another script from the Letraset range was used, Futura Script. Unlike one might assume from the name, this style is not one of the many Futura variations that Paul Renner created for Bauer. Rather, it is credited to Edwin W. Shaar, who designed it for Intertype in 1954.

Futura Script is used for the follow-up single as well, but now for the band name. The title is set in loosely spaced caps from Dom Casual, originally designed by Peter Dom and issued by ATF in 1951. Dom Casual was likewise available as dry-transfer sheets from Letraset.

The covers were designed by German artist and musician Moritz Reichelt of Ata Tak, also known as Moritz R® or Moritz Rrr.

This is the 7″ version – the 12″ has a nicer cover design with playfully illustrated letters.
