Rosey Grier’s Needlepoint for Men is a craft book written by Rosey Grier (b. 1932) and published by Walker & Co. in 1973. From the inner flap:

What happens when a tough cookie tackles the finer things in life? Will he leave people in stitches? Must he take a little gentle needling? Not if it’s Rosey Grier, former Los Angeles Rams and New York Giants tackle, who is putting down the pigskin and picking up stitchery. A sissy? Not a hulking, awesome, six-foot-five, three-hundred-pound chance. And if Rose’s massive hands can create lovely designs on canvas, then so can just about anyone’s.

Rosey Grier’s revolutionary aims are made clear in “Chapter 13: Other Men in Needlepoint.” Grier is brutally honest, discussing the shaming he received for his needlepoint, including numerous harassing phone calls. Naming and quoting friends and football players, Grier charges them with a kind of tacit homophobia: “cut that crap, Ro, you’ll have everyone who thought football players were rough and tough, looking at us like we are sissies or something else.”

Don’t cry. Rosey has all the answers. In time his shade-throwing football buddies all end up in his ever-growing sewing circle: “Every one of them does needlepoint now.”

Furniture Finishing is a woodworking book by Walter Ian Fischman, with drawings by Lloyd Birmingham. It was published by Bobbs-Merrill Company, Indianapolis, in 1978.

To kick off a new decade, 1960 Topps baseball cards hit the market with a new design concept that Topps hadn’t tried before. Horizontal layouts were something they’d featured before, sure. But this time, the cards featured a split-pane look, dual player images, and player names where every other letter alternated in color.

The typeface used for these two-color settings is what I consider the quintessential American typeface, Franklin Gothic, originally designed by Morris F. Benton in 1902 for American Type Founders. Shorter names make use of the Wide cut. Type historian Mac McGrew mentions that “although Benton started a wide version along with the others, it was abandoned; the present Franklin Gothic Wide was drawn by Bud (John L.) Renshaw about 1952.” The condensed style used for the team names and positions is Alternate Gothic.

The red caps appear to be News Gothic, paired with Venus Italic. Some smaller texts are set in Monotype’s Grotesque (Light 126 or Regular 215). Its italics are distinguished by a descending ‘f’.

The depicted Flight Kit packaging shows Brush Script. “FORD GT” is similar to Eurostile, but not as low-waisted.

Dampf (German for “steam”) is a book series for makers of steam engine models, started by Theodor Vieweg in 1981. The title and number is set in Davida. From publisher Neckar-Verlag (translated):

Thematically, stationary models, ship steam engines, road steam models and model steam locomotives are covered. Special topics include steam generators, control systems, turbines and rattling boats. The tried and tested models are presented in words and pictures in detailed building instructions with the corresponding drawings. From simple steam models to complex steam systems, the DAMPF books contain an extensive range of construction plans.
