Every year, for his coding class course at KABK, professor and designer Quentin Creuzet programs a website presenting the project topic to his students. This year, the theme revolves around the infra-ordinary. This mini-website summarises the theme and specifies the schedule of the course. It also points out the learning goals.

He chose Garnier Regular to typeset the whole website, playing with text blocks and shades of black and grey.

As possibly the largest hackathon ever held in China, AdventureX is deeply rooted in the local landscape, committed to amplifying the power of youth-driven technological creativity. In July 2024, 200 young innovators emerged from over a thousand applicants. In just five days, they not only launched over 50 promising projects, but also continuously redefined what it means to “create”.

The visual inspiration of AdventureX 2025 comes from the picture of meteor fragments splashed by SpaceX rockets, symbolizing the afterglow of exploration and the continuation of innovation. In the deep picture like the universe, countless high-speed light spots pass through the night sky, symbolizing teenagers from different backgrounds and skills - they meet briefly like meteors, but in a limited time they collide, burst, create, and light up the direction of the future.

Besign has designed a visual guidance system for all participants for AdventureX. The system uses high-saturation color blocks to mark the reachable space, and uses 3D modeling maps to assist information transmission. While giving priority to function, taking into account the visual aesthetics, the signboard adopts high-contrast typesetting, auxiliary color point navigation, icons to strengthen spatial semantics, and greatly improves the efficiency of path recognition and the speed of action decision-making through distance and estimated time prompts.

Continuing the Dune-style font tradition in 2024, Besign designed a new brand typeface Orbix, named after the Latin orbis, which means ring, orbit and universe. This minimalist science fiction style font adopts a softer curvature and geometric structure, integrating modern and future languages, echoing the scientific and technological ideals and the spirit of unknown exploration carried by the key visual. Orbix has been officially open sourced to GitHub before the AdventureX 2025 event, and logged in to Besign Foundry, providing free-to-use and expandable text expression tools for young designers and developers around the world.

c0da is an artistic research and publishing project by Katrin Mayer, conceived during a grant by the Berlin Artistic Research Programme. The website shows artistic contributions by different artists and writers that reflect on feminist modes of coding and writing, and it serves as a platform for activities related to its ongoing research and artistic production.

Katrin has invited a group of artists, writers and art historians to develop artistic contributions and correspondences loosely based around figures such as zeros, circles, holes and voids, which tie into concepts of feminist theory and philosophy and also reference the 0’s and 1’s that constitute the binary language of code and computation.

The typeface CMM Coda, specifially developed in the context of this project, is based on Dual Basic, a typeface designed in the 1960s for the IBM Selectric typewriter. It was one of the first machines where fonts could be switched and characters stored on magnetic band – thus an early analogue word-processor and important bridge technology between typewriter and computer.

Interestingly, both “typewriter” and “computer” were once terms to describe the female workforce operating the machines. Starting the late 19th century, typewriters enabled women to pursue careers such as typists, punchcard operators and telegraphists. Because women’s work used to be strongly associated with meticulousness, computing was considered well suited to women. In fact, the first people to write a computer program were women (ENIAC Six), the first software engineers in history. Thus, women have always occupied important roles in the transitioning of these technologies.

CMM Coda draws a conceptual and typographic connection between the notions of typing, coding and writing. It connects feminist histories of typewriters and software engineering with roles and visualities of monospaced and proportionally spaced typefaces characteristic for writing processes associated with typing, coding and writing.

Integrify is a training and recruitment platform that exists to change what’s next for the coders and companies of the world. They break down barriers of economic status and work experience to train and connect coders with their future employers.

Kallan & Co’s team worked closely with Integrify to realise a dynamic visual identity that communicated their future-focussed aspirations.

The Munken Creator is a web-based application for creating font animations in an experimental way.

With ‘Raising Questions’ and the Munken Sans font, the Swedish paper manufacturer Arctic Paper invites creators to playfully develop and experiment with typographic design in the Munken Creator. The typographic artworks created aim to inspire people to think beyond the boundaries of how we communicate.

Questions are the answers of our time. When asked correctly, they open the senses to new challenges. Because good questions are messages of change.

‘Raising Questions’ is an invitation to create visual messages using the newly developed Munken Creator Web-based animation application. Creators can then share them with a wide audience under the hashtag #munkencreator.

In 2020, Munken developed the font Munken Sans and shared it with the design community. Now new in 2022, Munken launches the Munken Creator, which is giving creators unimagined possibilities to develop and experiment with the font to create visually animated messages. These visuals can then be used for classic print or Web projects, with the animations directed or remixed in real time. Images and backgrounds can be combined with type editing in a nearly unlimited number of ways.

The creations from Munken Creator can be saved not only as images, but even as videos in WebM and MP4 formats and used in a variety of ways – from book projects to projections on house walls, there are almost no limits. The possibility to combine it with augmented reality allows the digital world to accentuate the tactile analogue experience.

For the launch of the Munken Creator, a large-format magazine will be published featuring artworks created using the Web-based application. With the augmented reality app Artivive, the digital level is combined with the magazine design to create new dimensions of perception.

Star Wars Coding Projects is a step-by-step visual guide to designing and coding in Scratch, with examples inspired by the Star Wars franchise. Written by Jon Woodcock, it was published by DK Children in October 2017.

“STAR WARS” is of course in its familiar custom wordmark; the “CODING PROJECTS” part of the title is in FF QType Square Black, with a small drop shadow. Secondary text is set in other fonts from the FF QType family, including even the speech bubble: FF QType Compressed Bold and the only lower case on the cover.

Radicle is a secure, peer-to-peer network for code collaboration. All typography on the website uses three typeface families by Kris Sowersby: Founders Grotesk (subheads ad body text) and Founders Grotesk Mono (illustrations) are paired with The Future Mono, used for headlines and logo.

The website uses Simplon Mono for text, with Boogie School Sans for headings. Druk Bold and ITC Cheltenham Italic, both in all caps, add another level of emphasis. The illustrations feature White Oleander.

CPS IT is a full-service internet agency based in Berlin. To provide the CPS-IT brand with a timely, appealing appearance, we have redesigned their corporate identity. We designed a playful and exciting visual identity, that better represents a contemporary tech company.

When we set out to create the brand identity for CPS-IT, we started questioning ourself on how to translate the professional expertise service into a visual language. The brand idea derived from the visual combination of blocks of code and the computer keyboard used to type it.

Typography is a key feature of the CPS-IT identity. We combine Space Grotesk (designed by Benjamin Critton) with Space Mono (based on Space Mono and designed by Florian Karsten), making for a a typeface selection that references coding and adds impact where necessary. The colour palette is bright and contrastful, echoing the accentuated coded text. This gives us great possibilities to create a playful and dynamic brand style.

Divine Synchronicity is a techno-doomsday new religious movement with a syncretic faith system pulling doctrines from Heaven’s Gate, Scientology, Christianity and writings by Ray Kurzweil.

They believe that the coming human-computer singularity will provide an opportunity for late capitalist oligarchs to enslave humanity in a virtual reality, and wish to escape it by using DivSync’s faith to forge a closer relationship with technology and establish a “Divine Circuit.”

The copy used throughout the cult’s collateral is a unique language generated using Javascript, with grids and shapes being generated by tech diagrams and particle systems.

Popular resource for everything web, Smashing magazine has been redesigned by Elliot Jay Stocks, using Skolar by David Březina for the headlines and intros, and Proxima Nova by Mark Simonson for the text. Smashing magazine also uses Skolar for its conferences, books, and workshops – in print as well as on digital platforms.

Tal Leming’s fantastic new resource for young type designers is a step by step intro to creating OpenType features. He lays out the basics and some neat tricks with wonderful examples. The website uses his upcoming type family Queue for text, Queue Mono for code samples and Timonium for illustrations. 

Code for America is a non-partisan and non-political organization that arranges and alleviates the collaboration between technology and design professionals and city governments in the United States in order to build open source technology.

For the web appearance of the organization design agency Clearleft used Freight Text for captions and subheadings and Interstate for everything else.
