Omnes is one of the brand typefaces for Oatsome. The German food startup offers smoothie bowls, crunchy toppings, nut spreads and other products for a healthy diet, all with 100% natural ingredients and no additives or added sugar.

Darden Studio’s selectively rounded sans is available in four widths: Narrow, Condensed, Semicondensed, and Standard. The Oatsome designers work with several of them, in various styles including the italic. Omnes Condensed and Narrow are being used for the product descriptions. These space-saving fonts also come in handy for placing all relevant consumer info like nutrition facts on the packaging designs.

Omnes is combined with Stick-A-Round by PintassilgoPrints. The unicase sans is used with some of its playful ligatures and nested letter pairs for the product names. The Oatsome logo features Shinntype’s Aptly in lowercase letters.

When Darden Studio introduced Omnes Widths, we designed promotional graphics with condiment packs. These demonstrated how dry information like lists of ingredients can still be presented in ways that are readable and appealing alike. We’re thrilled to see such an application in the wild!

Knusperone is the house brand for cereals by the ALDI discount supermarket chains. The impactful font used for their “Premium Müsli” is Peperoncino Inline, printed with silver ink.

The flavor is rendered in Garden Grown, in white and on an angle. The key ingredients are highlighted in KG Next To Me Solid, and the percentage value in the top left corner uses Peperoncino Sans.

Surreal Cereal, founded in the UK, offers delicious, high-protein, zero-sugar, plant based cereal in all your childhood favourite flavours.

Their branding and marketing by Onwards has a playful humorous tone that demands attention in the competitive industry of breakfast cereals. Roc Grotesk is supported by Tomato Grotesk throughout the brands packaging, social media, digital and print advertising.

Bobby Sherman (b. 1943) is a Californian singer and actor who started his career as a teen idol. In 1969, he signed with Metromedia Records, a company founded by Len Levy (1925–2022) shortly before.

Metromedia explored a novel way to reach his teenage fanbase: it partnered up with Post Cereals, who would include Sherman’s sixties bubblegum pop with their cereal products such as Alpha-Bits, Honey Comb, and Raisin Bran. The single-sided 6″ records didn’t come inside of the box. No, they were part of the box! Alan Cross recalls:

To play the record, you had to cut it carefully from the packaging. Yes, it was crappy, warpy cardboard coated with the thinnest, crappiest grooves that quickly wore out. Audio was predictable awful.

According to Mr. Breakfast, there were four different cardboard records available, each with five songs.

Bobby Sherman’s name is rendered in yellow caps from the condensed width of Benguiat Buffalo, set on a circle, featuring letterforms that were distorted by means of lenses. With its pronounced slab serifs, Buffalo was well-suited to withstand such a treatment, see also the Hello, Dolly! movie poster from around the same time. The designer cleverly used the alternate A with double-sided top serifs to minimize any interletter gaps.

To the best of my knowledge, Bobby is unrelated to Nick Sherman, who collects “interesting examples of type and lettering that follows a curve, including text that wraps around a circle or arch”, especially such that “incorporate some amount of arching, fanning, and/or distortion to improve the effect.”

Frosted Rice Krinkles is a discontinued sweet crisp rice cereal brand by Post Foods. It was originally known as Sugar Krinkles and later as Sugar Rice Krinkles. In the early 1970s, probably coinciding with the rebranding as Frosted Rice Krinkles, the package received a major overhaul. The name now was shown in three stacked lines of fat shaded caps; in blue, yellow ocher, and orange.

“Free inside: One Rip ’n Zip Speed Machine. Just rip … ’n zip! Collect all 3”. The ad for Kids magazine on the side mentions an expiry date of 12/31/72. There was also a version featuring “3 Jackson Five Groovie Buttons”.

The lettering appears to be a redrawn Albert. This film typeface was available from Lettergraphics in 1968, together with an outlined and shaded companion style named Fat Albert. The solid cut is different in some details. Most notably, the counters (in C or O) and apertures (in F) in Albert are bigger. The lettering on the cereal box looks like a protruded version of Albert, with a deeper shadow than Fat Albert has. Some letters were further streamlined: the stem of K got a consistent width and R now is on firmer footing.

I assume that Fat Albert is a copy of OP-Letter. If this is true, then Albert was probably derived from Fat Albert (and not the other way around). And “Frosted Rice Krinkles” then is shaded lettering based on a solid typeface, which in turn is based on a shaded typeface copied from a piece of lettering by Walter Haettenschweiler. Along the way, some of its more whimsical details were eliminated, but OP-Letter’s charm is still visible in the contrasting stem widths of N or the horizontal terminals in C or S. Neither OP-Letter nor Fat Albert are available in digital form. In April 2019, however, Pink Broccoli released Mushmouth PB, a digitization of the solid Albert.

The cereal box with this design is prominently featured in a number of TV commercials. Thanks to Duke University Libraries and the Internet Archive, several of them can be found in AdViews, “a digital archive of thousands of vintage television commercials dating from the 1950s to the 1980s. Bodega Sans Black is one of the typefaces used periodically for the Corn Flakes logo.

Ovomaltine (or Ovaltine, as it is known in English-speaking countries) was developed in Berne, Switzerland. The name comes from ovum, Latin for "egg", and malt, originally its main ingredients. According to Wikipedia, in 1909 "it was a misspelling in the trademark registration that led to the name being shortened to Ovaltine in English-speaking markets" when they started exporting to Britain.

The German label sports one of Europe’s most frequently used packaging typefaces, FF Dax. The logo is customized with a modified ‘t’. The official Swiss website uses FF Dax as webfonts throughout.

The packaging designs for the müsli varieties by Allos is less consistent than those for Dorset Cereals or mymuesli. Typewise, FF Market by H. A. Simon is the only constant.

For their work for Dorset Cereals, Big Fish was awarded a Gold DBA Design Effectiveness Award for best branded packaging.

For the lovers of a healthy breakfast and FF Sari.

mymuesli is a Bavarian start-up that offers organic cereals which can be custom-mixed on their website. The available ingredients allow for “566 quadrillion possible muesli variations”. Furthermore, mymuesli offers a ridiculously diversified range of ready-made flavors, too: There is a special mix for bikers and one for hikers. Instead of one “Kids” mix, there is a “Princesses” edition for girls and a “Pirates” version for boys. I can confirm that all those varieties actually exist; I’ve seen more than a dozen of them at the supermarket.

All muesli tubes feature big FF Sari Black paired with confident Futura caps. FF Sari was designed by the late Hans Reichel. It is the improved version of his own Barmeno (originally published as Barmen for H. Berthold AG in 1983). FF Sari was released as FF New Barmen (1999), but had to be renamed soon after due to a legal dispute. If you are curious what Reichel has amended in the remake (apart from adding two additional weights and a wider language support), just compare the ‘e’ in FF Sari to the one in Barmeno.

The special editions for Christmas 2011 and 2012 featured Metroscript. In 2009, mymuesli relied on the even more festive Flemish Script. The “Love Crunch Muesli” was another excuse to deviate from the FF Sari & Futura norm: Valentine’s Day was celebrated with Ministry Script.
