A safety campaign for Transport for London, designed to spotlight potential hazards across the network. Led by Ali Augur at VCCP London, the design and art direction made the most of short, punchy headlines within a portrait format. To emphasise impact, Obviously was used for its variable weights. The font is robust even when skewed or angled, always holding its strength and clarity.

Illustrator Andrew Hudson was brought on board to create the textured and colourful visuals that run throughout the campaign, adding depth and personality to the message.

Established in 1906, Justrite manufactures safety cans, cabinets, and other industrial products designed to minimize fire hazards and protect workers. The company’s new identity features JAF Bernina Sans, a typeface used across various applications, including product labeling.

From Community Action for Pembury Circus:

Pembury Circus is one of the most dangerous and inaccessible junctions in Hackney, and one of the most polluted sites in the UK. Air quality is in breach of 3 W.H.O recommendations and in the 99th percentile for the worst pollution in the country.

In January 2023 Hackney Council received £19 million through the Levelling Up scheme to redesign the junction, but the funding expires on 31 March 2025.

We are a community-led initiative of residents, businesses and workers based in Pembury Circus. We are campaigning to ensure improvements are made before the funding expires and the changes address local community concerns.

BC Vafle and Graphik are the brand typefaces for a project about keeping a safe distance – but not from each other as one would guess from the artwork year: 2020. This project is about bicycling, not about COVID. On their portfolio website, design studio Studio Najbrt quote the project initiators:

“Let's respect each other. We want motorists to overtake cyclists 1.5 meters away,” says project initiator Roman Kreuziger, a multiple participant in the Tour de France. He is joined by Slovak cycling star Peter Sagan, motorcyclist Filip Salač, Olympians Petr Vakoč and Jaroslav Kulhavý, The Autoclub of the Czech Republic and the Czech traffic police. That 1.5 m as the appropriate safe distance is a conclusion of a number of scientific studies and as such it is enshrined in law in many European states. In Central Europe, it is currently a symbol of a more universal campaign for greater consideration on the road: “The risk of an accident affects everyone, whether you are training for the Tour or going to buy groceries to your local deli. Also, most cyclists are also motorists and vice versa,” Kreuziger explained. We are happy to join the initiative with a campaign graphics, which quite commonsensically use a warning color and an appearance of a ruler.

Love getting to use Crayonette as well as a big size. The sans for all the singular words is Neue Haas Grotesk Display and the longer statement is Creato Display. Happy with how it came out!

Maystorm Studio was commissioned to develop a unique branding strategy for the 2023 Dam Safety Conference in Palm Springs. The project includes a full suite of digital media, event signage and print collateral, all unified under a color palette of cool blues and warm gradient tones that match the event's location and the organization’s existing brand. We used Noka as the bold main font, softened by a cursive accent font, Palm Canyon Drive, for a touch of vintage charm. The palette is completed by Ridley Grotesk. The cohesive and distinctive visual identity accurately represents the conference theme and objectives.

This Dutch road safety poster from 1967 on the “don’t drink & drive” theme was issued by the Verbond voor Veilig Verkeer (later merged into Veilig Verkeer Nederland – VVN). The designer is unknown (the signature reads PRI, or PRJ [see comments]).

There were several poster variants in this campaign; an earlier version had the more formal “u” instead of “je”, and by the time a later version was printed, the “Glaasje op?” bit had become so well known that this line of text was omitted.

Awareness was further increased by the fact that Amsterdam singer Sjakie Schram scored a hit with the slogan in 1966; the lyrics were written by Veronica DJ Joost den Draaijer (real name: Willem van Kooten).

This is the brand identity for a safety campaign, working to keep you SUP safe at all times.

In the UK, a number of safety concerns have arisen in recent years due to the immense popularity of stand up paddle boarding. In a bid to set the standard for SUP worldwide, the Academy of Surf Instructors of South West Cornwall used their decades of experience in the surfing world and world class knowledge of the sport and surrounding safety parameters to lead this new conversation.

The design identity needed to be universal, professional and champion the sport in a way never done before. Reviving values which were lost in the previous identity, a strategy was devised to produce engaging and informative content in the following years.

Balto Bold was a perfect type choice as it speaks to the humanity of the issues in the industry, whilst representing a positive strive for change. The space given to the headlines to speak for themselves allows the web users and the social media audience to read about the safety measures and make their own judgements based on their ability and environment.

Bespoke Serif is a brilliantly readable and subtle pairing for body copy. Copious amounts of detail needed to be digestable to a large audience, spanning continents (including translations by Google). Whether in paragraphs or captions, Bespoke did a wonderful job at communicating the technical and inviting the audience in closer.

SUP Standards now has a brand it can be proud of, keeping a generation of paddle boarders safer.

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) is an agency of the Irish Department of Transport, established in 2005 to make Irish roads safer. Its remit includes driver testing and licensing, the development and enforcement of driver regulations and vehicle standards, research, education, outreach, and advocacy. Its website, developed by BBDO Dublin, hosts a huge array of information, downloadable and online forms for the use of commercial drivers, hauliers, and the general driving public, all consistently designed for easy accessibility.

Ballinger is used throughout.

Kenny Stabler, notable for his 10-year career with the NFL’s Oakland Raiders, is featured here with his Houston Oilers team helmet – placing the date of this ad in 1980 or 1981 – when Stabler was with the Houston team.

Starting in 1979 (and continuing throughout the 1980s) the Motorcycle Industry Council launched their “Ride Aware. Show You Care.” public relations campaign [source]. Print media ads featured celebrities, sports figures, and motorcycle enthusiasts of the day, including Charles Bronson, Caitlyn Jenner, Lorenzo Lamas, Kent Howerton, Bobby and Al Unser, and American NFL quarterback Kenny Stabler.

Some of those ads, like this example from 1980/81, shouted “WHO CARES?” in large print across the top third of the page followed by a quote from the featured spokesperson warning the reader about the dangers of riding a motorcycle without protective gear. To quote Kenny Stabler from the ad:

I’d be laughed out of the stadium. Or carried out. Yet I see a lot of cyclists riding without even a helmet.

“Who Cares?” and “Ride Aware. Show You Care.” feature Futura Extra Bold Condensed Oblique. The body copy is set in Century Oldstyle Regular and Italic. The wordmark of the Motorcycle Industry Council uses Microgramma Bold Extended.

Century Expanded for a text-heavy ad by Chevron, with double indication for the paragraph breaks (large indents and vertical whitespace) as well as double emphasis (italics and underlines) for the key message.

Based on the rigorously proven neurological protection the product provides, we developed the brand, N-Pro. The product name and logo design made by Dynamo is visually striking, contemporary and professional; the tone of voice is unapologetic and direct. From there they built a rich brand world that illustrates the technology and product benefits in a truly aspirational way.

Euclid Flex, part of the Euclid collection and available from Swiss Typefaces, is used for all typography from headlines to body copy. In headlines, Euclid's alternate glyphs make for an attention-grabbing effect.

RISD:

Patrolling campus on foot, bicycle and in distinctively marked cruisers, the members of RISD’s Public Safety team work 24/7 to maintain a safe environment for RISD students.

The big letters on the cars are from Mierop Inline. This geometric biline sans was originally drawn by Craig Mierop, who also made Ginger Snap. Photo-Lettering’s One Line (1971) shows it in caps only. After House Industries had purchased the PLINC assets in 2003, Australian type designer Dan Milne was commissioned to work on a digital revival and expansion. His version is distinguished by greatly revised letterforms, a newly added lowercase, and a two-color option. It was completed in 2010 and released with the new PLINC incarnation around 2011.
