From Wikipedia:

Kirby: Planet Robobot is a 2016 platform game developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 3DS. It is the eleventh mainline installment in the Kirby series and the spiritual sequel to Kirby: Triple Deluxe. The story follows Kirby as he defends Planet Popstar from an alien corporation known as the Haltmann Works Company that wishes to mechanize the planet so that they can plunder its natural resources. New to the series in this game is Kirby's ability to utilize a mecha suit known as the Robobot Armor to solve puzzles and fight enemies.

Fitting the futuristic theme of the game, several of the fonts used are mechanical or computerized in nature.

The title logo is set in Helvetica Rounded (“Kirby”) and Filmotype Flyer (“Planet Robobot”). Both are modified.

The “Kirby” logo is oblique and uneven, and the gap of the letter b is replaced with a star. Unique to this installment, the logo is filled with a glowing scanline effect.

Rodin's numbers are replaced with those from Kafu Techno.

Carat is a typeface with thick vertical lines and thin horizontal lines evocative of MICR fonts. Its characters are blocky but not rigid.

Kafu Techno has strokes of even width, and squared characters with subtly rounded-off edges and tips. It resembles the characters on an LCD screen.

Rodin is a common font family for body text in Nintendo games, easily readable at a distance with consistent stroke widths.

This typeface uses jagged edges and straight lines, with the thickness of each stroke increasing as it reaches the end.

The sentient supercomputer Star Dream’s dialogue is set in Skip. Its vertical lines are slightly thicker than its horizontal lines, and its edges are tapered outward.

From Wikipedia:

Luigi's Mansion is a 2001 action-adventure game developed and published by Nintendo. The game was a launch title for the GameCube and was the first game in the Mario franchise to be released for the console; it was released in Japan on September 14, 2001, in North America on November 18, 2001, in Europe on May 3, 2002, and in Australia on May 17, 2002. It is the second video game in which Luigi is the main character instead of Mario, after Mario Is Missing!. Players control him as he explores a haunted mansion, searches for Mario and deals with ghosts by capturing them through a vacuum cleaner supplied by Professor E. Gadd.

Pop Happiness is used for the game's logo and as the primary interface typeface. Pop Happiness was designed by Fontworks and first released in 1997, per the company's release date timeline.

The logo is reused for other games in the Luigi's Mansion series. Tying into the game's premise of catching ghosts, eyes are imposed onto certain glyphs, and a wave distortion is applied.

The colors and the glow effect for the logo differ between several versions. The international print logo uses a blue-to-light blue gradient and an off-white glow; an alternate version of the international logo used in some promotional material uses white letters and a pink glow, with no gradients or a subtle pink gradient; the Japanese logo uses a dark blue-to-blue gradient and a blue glow; and the in-game logo uses a light-blue to white gradient and a purple glow. Additionally, the Japanese print logo features the game's title in English and Japanese and omits the game's possessive. The Japanese text is placed in the middle of the logo above the English letters, with white glyphs framed by a pink glow.

Various effects are applied to the in-game use of Pop Happiness depending on the context and interface, such as glow effects, outlines, and drop shadows.

For the control settings screen, Pop Fury is used for button labels, Comic Mystery is used for the names of control options, and Chiaro is used for the body text. Comic Mystery is also used for names of locations in the in-game UI and some text on the pause menu. All three fonts were designed by Fontworks; Chiaro was released in 1997, Pop Fury in 1998, and Comic Mystery. Notably, the release date of Luigi’s Mansion predates Comic Mystery’s listed release date. Given Nintendo's extensive use of Fontworks typefaces, this may imply that Luigi's Mansion use of Comic Mystery is a pre-release use.

The Game Boy Horror is an in-universe device based on the Game Boy. Its logo is based on the real-world Game Boy logo, which uses Gill Sans (see also: Game Boy logo, console, and packaging), but adds the word “horror” at the end in hand-drawn lettering. Gill Sans was designed by Eric Gill and first released in 1928 by Monotype.

On the file select screen, the text “Welcome to your mansion” uses Times New Roman. Times New Roman was created by Stanley Morison and Victor Lardent and first released in 1932 by Monotype. The type occasionally briefly changes to “Welcome to our mansion”, reflecting not only the setting (a haunted mansion inhabited by ghosts) but also the inciting incident of the game (Luigi winning the mansion in a contest he did not enter).

Fonts for “Press start!” on the title screen, the Gameboy Horror interface, ghost health, health/Boo count HUD, and names of the ghosts and treasure amounts on the area results screen, are unidentified. Some may be made in-house by Nintendo.

From Wikipedia:

The Game Boy is an 8-bit, fourth generation, handheld game console developed by Nintendo, launched in the Japanese home market on April 21, 1989, followed by North America and Europe later that year. Designed by the team behind the Game & Watch handhelds and NES games (Satoru Okada, Gunpei Yokoi, and R&D1), it was Nintendo's first portable console, combining features from both.

The Game Boy logo uses Gill Sans, set in all caps and italics and utilizing tight kerning. Gill Sans was designed by Eric Gill and first released in 1928 by Monotype. Two logo variants exist; a primary logo set in Gill Sans Italic, and a secondary logo using bolder letterforms. These are not from Gill Sans Bold Italic, but were rather emboldened artifically. Box art for Game Boy games uses the secondary logo, rotated vertically and set along the left side of the cover (see also: Pokémon – “Gotta catch ’em all!”). Print advertisements for the Game Boy console and games use both logo variants. In television advertisements, the bolder logo variant is printed large on the front of the console and the Nintendo logo is omitted. In commercial units, the lighter logo variant is used, printed smaller and with the Nintendo logo set to the left of the logo.

Labels on the Game Boy (excluding the face buttons) use Futura. Futura was designed by Paul Renner and first released in 1927. The face button labels use Corporate [edit: or rather its close copy, Limited, see comments], in all caps, mirroring the typeface’s usage on the Nintendo Entertainment System (see also: Nintendo Entertainment System console and components). Corporate was created by Roc Mitchell and released in 1971 by Alphabet Innovations. The face button labels are set on an angle, mirroring the alignment of the buttons.

The "3D" in the 3D System logo and icon is based on Earth. Other text is set in ITC Avant Garde Gothic.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is an upcoming computer-animated fantasy adventure comedy film based on the video game franchise Mario published by Nintendo, who also co-produced the film with Illumination and its distributor Universal Pictures. It is the franchise's third film adaptation, following the Japanese anime film Super Mario Bros.: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach! (1986) and the live-action film Super Mario Bros. (1993). Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic (in Jelenic's feature directorial debut) from a screenplay by Matthew Fogel, the film features an ensemble voice cast including Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen, Fred Armisen, Sebastian Maniscalco, Charles Martinet, and Kevin Michael Richardson.

Super Mario Bros. Plumbing is a viral marketing campaign to promote The Super Mario Bros. Movie in the form of a website and a video commercial for the titular business. Both the website and the commercial are stylized after advertisements from locale-specific businesses and contain Easter eggs to different entries in the Mario franchise and Nintendo history.

Banjo-Kazooie is a series of video games developed by Rare. The games feature a male bear named Banjo and his friend, a large female red bird named Kazooie, who are both controlled by the player. Banjo originally made his debut as a playable character in 1997 as part of the cast of Diddy Kong Racing. Throughout the various games, they are tasked with thwarting the various evil schemes of a witch named Gruntilda. The first game, Banjo-Kazooie, was released in 1998 to critical acclaim and was followed by three sequels and a spin-off racing game.

Lithos was designed by Carol Twombly and released by Adobe in 1989.

In-game dialogue and the user interface use the typeface Comicrazy.
In the original Nintendo 64 release and the Switch Online emulated version of the first game, copyright information on the game's title screen uses Lithos. In Xbox rereleases, Comicrazy is used instead.

Paper Mario is a video game series and part of the Mario franchise, developed by Intelligent Systems and produced by Nintendo. It combines elements from the role-playing, action-adventure, and puzzle genres. Players control a paper cutout version of Mario, sometimes with allies, on a quest to defeat the antagonist, primarily Bowser. The series consists of six games and one spin-off; the first, Paper Mario (2000), was released for the Nintendo 64, and the most recent, Paper Mario: The Origami King (2020), for the Nintendo Switch.

From Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door onwards, dialogue in the Paper Mario games use Pop Joy, a typeface by Fontworks.

Interfaces in the international releases of the Paper Mario series use Pop Joy and an unknown jagged typeface. The unknown typeface is found in most modern Mario games from Super Mario 3D Land onward. It is colloquially known as “the Mario typeface” by fans. It was designed in-house by Nintendo.

Interfaces in the Japanese releases of the Paper Mario series additionally use the typeface Seurat, also by Fontworks. In international releases of the Paper Mario games, Pop Joy replaces Seurat.

Pop Joy is often mistaken for Hey Gorgeous, the latter of which is a reproduction of Pop Joy.

Pinto Flare might have been one of the few originals by the NYC-based company. Its designer is unknown. Don Roberts was the TV show’s art director in 1972. I don’t know if he takes credit for the logo.

When Bob Barker (b. 1923) retired in 2007 after a remarkable thirty-five years as the show’s host, passing the mic to Drew Carey, this change was marked by a new logo variant: the curly dollar sign and the title were now framed by two shapes that resemble the sliding doors, or maybe also a rotated shopping basket.

License: All Rights Reserved.

Left: The current logo for The Price Is Right, in use on the website since September 19, 2022.
Right: a resetting in the Pricedown font. Differences include the height of T, the waistline of P R and C, as well as the size of the counters and apertures.

Over the years, the logotype was adjusted and redrawn numerous times, for various applications (for more images, see the dedicated wiki). The letterforms underwent slight (and sometimes not so slight) changes.

In or before January 1998, Ray Larabie of Larabie Fonts (now Typodermic) released a digital font based on the show logo, and named it Pricedown. The marquee text that accompanied the release made it clear where he got the inspiration from:

Come on down, you're the next contestant on the Price is Right (tm). I’m sorry, you have all overbid. It’s time for Plinko! Let’s play Squeeze Play. Spin that wheel. A new car!
If you can’t figure out where this font is from I suggest you put those books away and catch up on some daytime television.

In an early version (v2 from 1999), the ampersand in the font is still the curly one from the TV show logo. Larabie’s interpretation isn’t faithful to Pinto Flare. Most notably, the counters and apertures in Pricedown are larger, and letters like g or q don’t have a notch at the top. These details actually match some (redrawn) versions of the logo, including those seen on the board game boxes.

A board game from 1998 appears to make use of Larabie’s font, see below – if that’s indeed the case, Pricedown came full circle right after its release. The authors of the Price is Right wiki claim that, “starting in 2007, the font for the Carey logo is, and still is, a custom version of Pricedown.” I can’t confirm this claim, but the comparison shown above suggests that it’s imaginable.

In 2013, Larabie released a rebuilt and improved version of Pricedown, expanding the design to nine weights from Ultralight to (the original) Black, with numerous alternates and ligatures, and a character set that covers Latin (incl. Vietnamese), Greek, and Cyrillic.

In 2005, Patrick Griffin of Canada Type issued another digitization. His interpretation named Jazz Gothic is based directly on Pinto Flare and hence stays closer to the original than Pricedown. As far as I can tell, this font was never used by The Price is Right. It’s a handy option if you want to recreate the original 1972 logo, though.

From Wikipedia:

A major revision to the Game Boy came in 1996 with the introduction of the Game Boy Pocket, a slimmed-down unit that required just two smaller AAA batteries, albeit at the expense of providing just 10 hours of gameplay. […] The Game Boy Pocket launched in Japan on July 20, 1996, and in North America on September 2, 1996, for US$69.99 (equivalent to $140 in 2024).

Introducing Cruis’n World on Nintendo. 16 exotic cars, 15 foreign countries to race them through and enough tricks to turn anybody into a hot dog.

This is a 1998 magazine print ad promoting the Cruis’n World video game, which was a Nintendo 64 port from Midway’s 1996 arcade game of the same name.

It features the tagline “Get N or Get Out”, which was used by Nintendo during the 1997–1998 period, to promote videogames for their Nintendo 64 gaming console.

The entire ad is set in Resbaloso. It is listed as a 2001 release in the Fonts In Use database, but this ad suggests that the typeface existed in some form in 1998.

License: All Rights Reserved.

Page 1 of the 2-page magazine spread.

License: All Rights Reserved.

Page 2 of the 2-page magazine spread.

License: All Rights Reserved.

A zoomed in image of the text used in this ad, set in Resbaloso.

This post was originally published at Fonts In Use
