Popeye Meets the Man Who Hated Laughter, also known as The Man Who Hated Laughter, is a 1972 American animated one-hour television special that was part of The ABC Saturday Superstar Movie. This film united characters from almost every newspaper comic strip then owned by King Features Syndicate in one story.

The main logo for the film is set in Caruso Roxy [edit: or rather its close follower Holiday, see comments], which was popular in the 1960s and 1970s.

American Broadcasting Company (ABC) introduced its new look on August 9, 2021, ahead of the 2021–22 season. Designed by Trollbäck & Company, it is designed to adhere to flat design trends, and returns to a solid, two-dimensional design with smaller and bolder lettering. The main logo is rendered in a dark, blue-gray color, outlined and black-on-red variations are also used, such as for the on-screen bug and promotional usage, respectively.

The main brand typefaces are GT America Condensed Medium for text and Heldane Display Bold for headlines.

Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (often informally called Millionaire) is an American television game show adapted from the same-titled British program created by David Briggs, Steven Knight and Mike Whitehill and developed for the United States by Michael Davies. The show features a quiz competition with contestants attempting to win a top prize of $1,000,000 by answering a series of multiple-choice questions, usually of increasing difficulty. The original U.S. version premiered on ABC on August 16, 1999, as part of a two-week daily special event hosted by Regis Philbin. The words “Who Wants To Be A” are wrapped twice around a circle. Dollar signs adorn the middle, with the Word “Millionaire” wrapped around them. All text in the logo was designed in Copperplate Gothic, which is a pretty popular font for logos.

Copperplate Gothic is also used for other graphics in the show. At least in the early years, the multiple-choice questions were shown in ITC Conduit.

Title sequence by Penelope Gottlieb for the 1986 American science fiction adventure film SpaceCamp. All opening titles are set in a more solid variant of Earth, with most rendered in a 3D chrome effect that is almost identical to the logo of 1984’s The Terminator.

The Persuaders! is an action-comedy series starring Tony Curtis and Roger Moore, produced by ITC Entertainment, and initially broadcast on ITV and ABC in 1971. The show has been called “the last major entry in the cycle of adventure series that began 11 years earlier with Danger Man in 1960”, as well as “the most ambitious and most expensive of Sir Lew Grade’s international action adventure series”. All-lowercase Kalligraphia was chosen for the titles of The Partridge Family. Designed by Sandy Dvore, the opening sequence features an animated family of partridges. See the walking birds in action in the video at the end of this post. Dvore’s original art of the partridge hen and her five chicks was offered in an auction in 2016.

AM America was a morning news program by the American Broadcasting Company (ABC). Launched in January 1975, it lasted only ten months on the air. This promo clip was already mentioned in the post focusing on the program’s logo in Yagi Link Double. Here we’ll take a closer look at the other animated type in this spot, as it pretty much sums up the various trends in 1970s display typography in the United States.

The promo opens up with the name of host Bill Beutel, sliding in from both sides, in caps from the bold and informal Blippo Black, a geometric sans in the vein of Burko, Harry or Bauhaus Geometric. The typeface chosen for the name of co-host Stephanie Edwards – the only woman featured – is Ringlet, an 1880s design with curls, and one of the various Victorian faces that saw a revival in the 1960s and 1970s, in pink. Washington correspondent and news anchor Peter Jennings is represented by a wall of caps in a no-nonsense condensed grot, probably Helvetica schmalhalbfett. “News” gets the (then) futuristic MICR-style face Moore Computer. In further roles: Two staples from ITC; ITC Avant Garde Gothic Bold for Robert Trout and ITC Serif Gothic for Sam Ervin, both in all caps, and the inevitable Bookman Swash with its artificially obliqued and boldened letterforms for John Lindsay. The multicolored “Entertainment” uses an all-caps/unicase face made of dots, available from Photo-Lettering as Dellacroce Marquee B.

Yagi Link Double is the typeface chosen for the logo of AM America. From Wikipedia:

AM America was a morning news program produced by ABC in an attempt to compete with the highly rated Today on NBC. Premiering on January 6, 1975, the show never found an audience against Today or the CBS combo of the CBS Morning News and Captain Kangaroo. Lasting just under ten months, its final installment aired on October 31.

A promo clip featured an animated version of the logo, with the interlinked letterforms from the neon-like typeface gradually building up from three starting points. The A is a custom barless version (like an upside-down V) that flows into the typeface’s alternate M. “ERICA” likewise is made of glyphs that allow for linked pairs. Once the two parts in blue and in red are complete and the former is scaled down to match the size of the latter, the wordmark is perfected by a red star inside the A. Yagi Link Double was also used for the studio graphics, including the date display.

The Conners is an American television sitcom created for ABC as a spin-off continuation of the long-running series Roseanne. The series is produced by Werner Entertainment, with Bruce Helford serving as showrunner and stars John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, Sara Gilbert, Lecy Goranson, Michael Fishman, Emma Kenney, Ames McNamara, Jayden Rey and Maya Lynne Robinson, with all except Robinson reprising roles from Roseanne.

The show follows the Conners, a working class family struggling to get by on a modest household income. After the death of the original show’s lead character Roseanne, they are forced to face the daily struggles of life in their home in the fictional mid-state exurb of Lanford, Illinois, in a way they never have before.

The typeface used for the show’s identity is the same one that already served for Roseanne: It’s Cooper Black.

A matchup between league-leading teams from major television markets (the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics) got a special promo video last week that aired on ABC, ESPN, NBA TV, and online. The big names were set in big lights, using UNDA Circle. It’s a long shot, but I wonder if the creators of this solid 30-second spot for NBA Saturday Primetime, an ESPN/ABC broadcast series, were influenced by ABC’s historical promotional films — specifically the “Funshine Saturday” title from ABC’s 1974 Fall Preview which features Chicago (MN), another lightbulb typeface.

Lancelot Link, Secret Chimp is an early 1970s comedy series featuring a cast of chimpanzee spies. It was produced by Sandler-Burns-Marmer and first aired on ABC on September 12, 1970. From Fabulous Sebastian’s review for DVD Purgatory:

Children’s television in the sixties and early seventies was bizarre. Really bizarre. I don’t know if drugs were involved, but reflecting on shows like Batman, The Magic Roundabout, Banana Splits, HR Pufnstuff, and even Sesame Street, makes me think they were. And in large quantities. Perhaps the oddest of them all was Lancelot Link, Secret Chimp, which was produced from 1970 to 1972. Mike Marmer and Stan Burns, probably inspired by the success of Get Smart (where they were writers), Planet of the Apes, and Mr Ed, had the idea to create a spy series using talking chimpanzees. The cost of creating costumes and sets in perfect scale for the apes made it the most expensive Saturday morning children’s show of its time. And it looks fantastic for the effort.

The show centred around Link and his love interest, the glamorous Mata Hairi, who were spies for APE (Agency to Prevent Evil). APE were in a continual war with CHUMP (Criminal Headquarters for Underworld Master Plan), headed by Baron von Butcher (voiced by Bernie Kopell who played Siegfried in Get Smart). Each show also included Lance and friends performing as The Evolution Revolution, who were the coolest band of the time (much cooler than Josie and the Pussycats or The Monkees).

The Agency to Prevent Evil (A.P.E.) wordmark uses City Bold with faux small caps, set on a curve and framed by bananas.

Roberta appears again for the secondary title card.

The squarish sans-serif caps with rounded corners used for the logo of C.H.U.M.P. (Criminal Headquarters for Underworld Master Plan) appear to be custom lettering.

Among the accompanying merchandise was a metal lunch box produced by Thermos (1971). Here, the “Lance Link” wordmark uses Bauhaus Geometric Shaded (Photo-Lettering, 1970). This precursor to ITC Bauhaus (1975) was drawn by Ed Benguiat, who also helped to develop the title graphic for Planet of the Apes in 1968. [House Industries] “Secret Chimp” is set in Broadway Condensed. Link is shown together with Mata Hairi and his boss, Commander Darwin.

The reverse side of the lunch box shows Baron von Butcher, the Duchess, and another CHUMP villain.

Lancelot Link also had a band, The Evolution Revolution, which released one self-titled album (Dunhill/ABC Records, 1970) of psychedelic bubblegum pop music, with a cover design by Douglas Carr. Cattanooga Cats is an animated television series from Hanna-Barbera Productions that aired on ABC from 1969–1971. It features a band of anthropomorphic cartoon cats who travel around in a van and play bubblegum pop music. This record was a marketing tie-in for the cartoon and includes songs from the show.

Released in 1969, the album’s design seems to be riding the wave of success from Lance Wyman’s multiline identity for the Olympic Games in Mexico City the year before. The typeface on the cover is nearly identical to the corresponding Mexico Olympic typeface, with the only notable deviation being in the top left of the N. The repetitive treatment of the type also mimics techniques used for the Olympics.

A three-colored Filmsense forms the centerpiece of the visual identity of Zacharia, “a 1971 American Western musical film directed by George Englund and written by Joe Massot and the four members of the comedy troupe The Firesign Theatre […] The film stars John Rubinstein as Zachariah, and Don Johnson as his friend Matthew, as two gunfighters journeying through the American West.” — Wikipedia. The secondary type on the movie poster is set in a number of slab-serif styles, apparently from Rockwell and Stymie.

The multiline typeface by Push Pin Studios reappears on the cover of the soundtrack album, here in black and white. The artists’ names are in caps from Kabel Black.

The soundtrack includes tracks by a solo Neil Young and Crosby, Stills, and Nash. Kabel Black coincidentally is the signature typeface of The James Gang.

Diff’rent Strokes is an American sitcom that aired on NBC from 1978 to 1985, and on ABC from 1985 to 1986. Despite some flourishes, the title font is Cooper Black Italic for “Diff’rent” and Cooper Black for “Strokes”.

In the titles of the first episode, the letterforms didn’t have a shadow yet.

I woudn't normally contribute something like this, but the typography of The Story of Diana was so distracting throughout, with the mix of smart and dumb quotes, so I just had to.
