Companion is a magazine by Gail’s Bakery, exploring food, history, nature, and craft through essays, stories, recipes, and art. Number 1, “The Bread Issue”, delves into wheat’s terroir, recipes for leftover bread, baking in prisons, the visual beauty of a regenerative wheat farm, and many more inspiring tales.

The layouts are graphic and playful, featuring mostly Sprig from body copy to titles and Basis Grotesque for some typographic highlights.

Martha Stewart celebrates her landmark 100th book with an intimate collection of 100 treasured recipes, along with stunning photos from her personal archives and the stories behind them. A must for anyone who has ever been inspired by the one and only Martha.

Published by Clarkson Potter, the book was designed by Susan Roxborough, Stephanie Huntwork and James Maikowski. The project uses Romie Regular and Italic (designed by Margot Lévêque) as the headline and text typeface. The accompanying sans appears to be Commercial Type’s Graphik, used with its alternate schoolbook a.

From Odd Notion:

Back in 2021, we met Willis Anderson III, a retired chef selling his homemade BBQ sauce at farmers markets. Seeing the potential in his product, we encouraged Willis to apply for our Dream Night initiative, which helps minority-led brands with branding and websites.

Problem:
Willis faced limitations selling only at local markets and desired to tap into the wholesale market. Lack of online presence hindered his growth, and his branding didn’t match his product’s premium quality.

Solution:
We revamped My Daddy’s Sauce, emphasizing its superior quality and fresh ingredients. By creating a user-friendly website with updated product visuals, we facilitated wholesale transactions and connected Willis with a broader customer base.

Morgenmete is an independent publisher dedicated to exploring the humor and absurdity of life through the lens of breakfast. We believe in print, and in celebrating the best meal of the day, and we love that breakfast is a topic that speaks to both universal experiences and unique traditions in imaginative ways.

Although Morgenmete takes inspiration from iconic food magazines like Lucky Peach and The Gourmand, as well as industry classics like Bon Appétit and Saveur, we aim to publish stories by contributors who don’t come from traditional food-writing backgrounds. Breakfast is the starting point for our editorial, but our diverse cast of writers, illustrators, and photographers interprets that topic in endlessly creative and varied ways.

About the issue:
Morgenmete’s Always Connected Issue believes the breakfast table is the best lens through which to examine our screen-based culture. It’s hard to get away from being extremely online, and breakfast is no exception. We examine what this means for the first meal of the day with deep stories, tantalizing photo essays, delicious dishes, and plenty of hot takes. Come hungry.

The New York Times Magazine’s “The Voyages” issue 2024, art directed by Gail Bichler and Claudia Isabel Rubín, uses Maria by Threedotstype and NYT Mag Serif as well as some NYT Mag Sans by A2-Type.

It explores the display features of the Maria Connected typeface for all its titles and the index. Carina del Valle Schorske and Molly Young (Perfume story) carefully wrote the stories. Powerful photography by Gueorgui Pinkhassov, Marta Luccisano, Matthew Pillsbury, and Christopher Gregory-Rivera. What a trip!

Velká kuchařka světových kuchyní (English: “The big cookbook of world cuisines”) is a beautiful recipes book from Czechia, edited by Daniela Mrzenová and Petra Ostrá and published by TopLife Czech. It features Turquoise on the book cover and the spine.

52 of the best Czech chefs present their recipes in complete three-course menus. In their biographies we will also learn which world cuisine inspires them most in their work and much more. Every recipe title is also typeset in Turquoise. The sans is Avenir Next Condensed. In addition to traditional Czech recipes classified as Central European cuisine, we can find recipes with Creole, Asian, Middle Eastern, Scandinavian, Mediterranean, French, and American steakhouse cuisine. For each dish, the selected chefs prepared a detailed recipe with all the necessary ingredients.

Les Trésors de Gilberte is a familial recipes book based on Gilberte H. Acampora’s kitchen notebooks. Book design by Léa de Pannemacker, setting in Kalice (by Margot Lévêque), Maison Neue (by Milieu Grotesque), and Snell Roundhand (by Matthew Carter).

Dedicated to her family, her children and grandchildren and strongly inspired by the grandparents' retro-romantico-mediterranean aesthetic house, this object is a small part of memories with which new memories will be created through time and generations.

Volume one was made in 2021, volume two followed a year later.

Simple & Clever Cooking is a cookbook adventure by Hamburg-based chef Stevan Paul with photography by Vivi D’Angelo, published by Brandstätter Verlag. It celebrates the versatility of modern vegetable cooking, the art of omitting and focusing on a few quality ingredients with lots of flavour and inspiring ideas for your kitchen. Awarded with the German Cookbook Prize as well as the Swiss Gourmet Book Award in gold.

This book by Angelika Maria Schnell is about traditional dishes from a village in the mountains of South Tyrol: Altrei. There are old recipes, rituals and cremes – provided with dialectal sayings.

In the design we have placed great emphasis on the font choices. We used Wayfinder CF by Connary Fagen for the titles and Maiola by TypeTogether for the basic text and ingredients. With Wayfinder, we found it especially exciting to use all the great ligatures and beautiful glyphs.

The book was published by Effekt Verlag.

Designed by Capucine Labarthe, Story on a Plate is a beautiful editorial object combining Apoc for the titlings and Aperçu for the text.

Brand identity, portfolio book and website for Food Pirate Studios, a food photography agency based in Milan. Basis Grotesque (Colophon, 2015) is used throughout.

Duo-Tang is a Montreal based studio specialized in food photography. Co-founded by the creative duo Patricia Brochu and Frank Lat, the studio works in a spirit of collaboration using their art and knowledge to bring projects to another level.

The fonts used in this identity project are Uxum Grotesque by Bureau Nuits and Iskry by Laïc Type Foundry.

The Holiday Special of Bon Appétit magazine from December 2018 makes prominent use of Beatle (Lián Types, 2014), a contemporary homage to bottom-heavy scripts with high contrast like Gonzales Jeanette and Brandywine. In the words of type designer Maximiliano Sproviero:

What if Platt R. Spencer and Charles P. Zaner were born in mid-20th century? What if instead of Beethoven or Chopin they were fan of The Beatles or maybe The Mamas & the Papas? Beatle is what I think those masters would have made with their hands if they were influenced by music of our 60s. Letters shouting for peace, like a true hippie does, with a lot of elegance.

Beatle is paired with words that mix caps from Rui Abreu’s Grifo and its extra condensed companion, Grifinito (R-Typography, 2016–17). The sans serif is Futura PT. The Bon Appétit logo is custom. It was drawn by Tal Leming “for Alex Grossman’s 2011 redesign of the magazine. The initial version of the previous logo was developed by Matthew Lenning and Matthew Carter based on Zuzana Licko’s Mrs Eaves.”
