Description of the Museen Basel:

Welcome to museum city, welcome to Museen Basel! Basel was home to Europe’s first publicly accessible museum, which opened in 1661. Today the museum association Museen Basel comprises 37 museums in the city of Basel and the surrounding urban region. The sheer range of exhibitions on offer is staggering. Subjects covered include international art, natural history, architecture, medicine and much else, and the quality of the collections is high throughout.

Museen Basel is a platform jointly run by the museums and the Canton of Basel Stadt’s division of cultural affairs. It aims to promote museum-related matters as a community and to enhance awareness of Basel as a museum city. Museen Basel is a network that has grown organically both as a brand and a quality label.

The website museenbasel.ch facilitates access to the Basel museum landscape and presents an overview of the exhibitions and events on offer. It also provides information on collective commitments, joint projects, special highlights and the unique flair of Basel as a museum city for the benefit of both inhabitants and visitors.

The website of the institution is set in NN Swinton ​​by Nouvelle Noire.

Poster / flyer designed by Hoang Nguyen to advertise the two Master programmes of the Visual Communication Institute of the Basel School of Design. One being the Master of Arts in Visual Communication and Iconic Research and the other the International Master of Design UIC/HGK (MDes).

The display typeface shown prominently when the flyer is still folded up is called Kiosk. It was designed by David Gobber and is available from his website. The typeface used to set the running text is Unica77, the corporate typeface of the Basel School of Design designed by Team77, which is available from Lineto. All other letterforms visible in the design were created for this poster / flyer by Hoang Nguyen and are not part of any available typefaces.

Hauser, Schwarz continue to design the Basel Sinfonietta’s communication for this new season.

Euclid Flex is part of the Euclid typeface, available from Swiss Typefaces.

In 2014, the Swiss studio Hauser, Schwarz conceived the entire re-branding of the internationally acclaimed Orchester für Neue Musik / Basel Sinfonietta.

Euclid Flex is in use for the logotype, posters, website and other media.

Basel Antiqua is a new Renaissance typeface designed by Christian Mengelt. It was released in May 2014 under the name Mengelt Basel Antiqua in the Linotype Originals library. The typeface comprises four OpenType fonts with support for Latin, Greek, and Cyrillic.

The publication on Basel Antiqua and its background is also available online, in English and German.

Nina posted this on Twitter before: The new owner of Basel-based confectionery Läckerli-Huus apparently found the fraktur ‘H’ unacceptable. It got replaced with a dumb and unskilled hybrid form in the new logo. The ‘s’ lost its fine top swash, and the ‘l’ was messed with, too. Also, the (double) hyphen had to go.

This is not the first time that blackletter peculiarities were sacrificed: In the 1990s, the logo still proudly featured a ‘ck’ ligature. When the ligature was dissolved, the new ‘k’ kept its very tiny and high loop — and got an enormous leg (see images below).

All logo versions are related to the model of Fette Fraktur. The newest one is derived directly from a digitally available font. By the way, Linotype’s Fette Fraktur has the “romanized” ‘k’ as included in the Läckerli Huus logo, while URW++ and E+F offer the font with the original fraktur ‘k’.

Maakii Makis are animals with very big eyes, which excel at communicating and know their way around the media jungle. For the Basel- and Cologne-based media production company Maakii I developed this fresh identity that aims to be simple but surprising.

The 'K' and other glyphs were modified.

“Zu bürgerlicher Eintracht und Vertraulichkeit – Ein gartnernzünftiges Geschichtenbuch”, published in November 2011 by Friedrich Reinhardt Verlag, Basel. This 256-page, illustrated storybook celebrates the rich and eventful 750-year history of the Basel Gardeners’ Guild and its complex interconnections with Basel’s local history, with a diverse selection of stories, images, and glimpses into Basel's past.
