The corporate design for Die Mehlwerkstatt is a modern interpretation of baking craft. The focus is on sustainability and quality: no artificial flavors, no additives, no baking mixtures – baking art in its purest form. The taste of the past meets today’s zeitgeist. This look and feel is carried forward in the social media concept and is also reflected in the product photos.

The design was made in collaboration with Dominic Brandt.

Companion is a magazine by Gail’s Bakery, exploring food, history, nature, and craft through essays, stories, recipes, and art. Number 1, “The Bread Issue”, delves into wheat’s terroir, recipes for leftover bread, baking in prisons, the visual beauty of a regenerative wheat farm, and many more inspiring tales.

The layouts are graphic and playful, featuring mostly Sprig from body copy to titles and Basis Grotesque for some typographic highlights.

Para from Rellence and Brandon Grotesque from HvD Fonts are used for King Arthur Baking Company’s Big Book of Bread, published in 2024 by Simon Element, an imprint of Simon & Schuster. The book is a #1 New York Times, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly bestseller, and was named one of the best cookbooks of the year by New York Magazine, The Readable Feast, AOL, and Here & Now.

As the most wide-ranging bread book in a decade, it offers 125 recipes for novices and seasoned bakers alike, from everyday pan loaves to sourdough classics and festive breads. Para’s contemporary serif balances warmth with authority, making it ideal for long recipes, step-by-step instructions, and rich editorial content.

Written by Jen Latham, Baking Bread with Kids brings together twenty bread recipes to make as a family. The book uses Sofia by Olivier Gourvat as the main typeface for the editorial content, while some pages also feature ITC Ronda by Herb Lubalin to mark the chapter openings. The book has 176 pages, measures 7½×10″, and was printed on semi-matte paper with a matte varnished cover and perfect binding. Published by Ten Speed Press. ISBN: 9781984860460.

Tre Mari is an Italian bakery and deli in Toronto’s St. Clair West neighborhood that has been open since 1960. Now in its third generation, they worked with Blok Design to reimagine their identity, packaging, and visual system.

The new identity features my typeface Condor in Compressed and Condensed widths, Displaay’s Avantt and Lineto’s LL Brown, punctuated by moments of Dinamo’s ABC Honeymoon. The logo is typeset in Ivar Headline from Letters from Sweden, with a custom head serif on the A, a featured carried forward from the bakery’s previous logo.

With this identity our goal was to bring a staple of the community forward without losing who they are. Tre Mari is very much a family business with many different characters all coming together. To express this we knew we would like a diverse typographic language and colour palette that evoked their bold, playful side while still holding their Italian heritage and strong family roots. We felt that the final identity evokes these classic elements of Italian/ European design while still feeling contemporary, fresh and bold.

Orange Squash is used together with a yet unidentified sans for the brand identity of Loaves ’n’ Doughs. From design studio Kellie Lynn Media:

Loaves ’n’ Doughs is a micro bakery in Meridian, Idaho that specializes in crafting artisanal sourdough bread and naturally leavened baked goods.

The scope of this intensive was to create a visual brand for labels and social media. The goal was to create a brand that stands out against the other sourdough micro bakeries and establish a brand vibe in-alignment with her lifestyle. Custom illustrations and typography brought this brand to life.

Bellasmith Script is shown in the style guide alongside Orange Squash and the yet unidentifed sans, but it doesn’t appear in any of the shown applications.

Mirá is an artisanal bakery that blends tradition and innovation, drawing on Japanese and Brazilian knowledge to reinvent breadmaking. Inspired by the scientific method and the ancestral art of bread, Mirá is a space where memory, research, and haute cuisine converge – turning the experience of bread into an act of culture and experimentation.

Visual identity, art direction and some assets created last year for Pa i Punt, a bakery that offers bread made with a variety of stone-ground traditional grains, sourdough, and a long fermentation process. The typography pairs Teodor with Neue Haas Grotesk. The logotype is custom drawn.

Le Jardin is a French bakery located in Helsinki. According to the designers, the brand name, meaning “the garden”, –

serves as inspiration for its visual identity, where the concept centers around lush, garden-like arrangements featuring bread and pastries. This approach evokes freshness and delicacy, mirroring the experience of enjoying their pastries straight from the oven. Every detail reflects Le Jardin’s commitment to quality, offering customers a unique and inviting bakery experience rooted in both French tradition and a modern Nordic sensibility.

Designed by Classmate Studio and Studio Bodin, the project beautifully pairs the serif Romie Medium (designed by Margot Lévêque) with the sans serif Social (designed by Dinamo).

Panorama is a bread-focused restaurant located in the 11th arrondissement of Paris, France. The restaurant's concept is "Cuisiner le pain" (Cooking with bread): each day, the baker prepares the signature bread on-site using traditional flours. Then, the chef creates original and convivial dishes around it, all accompanied by fine wines and quality coffee.

For the visual identity, I (Paul Dagorne) created a custom typeface inspired by old French bakery storefronts: Pacifique Panorama, a decorative font resembling ears of wheat, used for the logo. To complement this font, a second weight was developed with the same design but in a thinner style and without the floral accents: Pacifique Regular.

I added a playful mascot, joining the Pacifique Panorama glyphs to create a lively brand identity. This character can be found on all of the restaurant’s materials, engaging in various actions.

Research drawing inspired by old French bakery storefronts

One day, walking together around Tbilisi, collector Giorgi Japaridze and gallery owner Tamuna Gvaberidze bought a loaf of shotis puri, a type of traditional Georgian bread that is baked on almost every street corner. While enjoying their crusty snack, they decided to photograph all the bakers of Georgia. The two teamed up with photographer Alexander Zachs and travelled to the Samegrelo region. Having talked to a number of local bakers, Giorgi and Tamuna realised that their quest should result in a bilingual book rather than just a photo series and asked author Maria Korolkova to join the project.

The book was designed by Daria Yarzhambek and Yury Ostromentsky. They picked Loos by CSTM Fonts (co-designed by Daria and Yury with Ilya Ruderman) for Georgian text and opted for Parmigiano by Typotheque to set English.

Lilova is a bakery located in Vinnytsia, my hometown in Ukraine. Lilia, the chef and friend of mine, draws inspiration from the natural world. Her name, Lilia, even means “lily” – a flower!

The concept for Lilova blends natural motifs with baked goods. I selected shapes that mirror both elements nature and baking. Take the croissant, resembling a seashell, or the silhouette of a leaf, mirroring the form of a loaf of bread. These shapes not only establish a visual connection but also symbolize Lilia's commitment to using only the freshest, locally sourced ingredients in her baked goods.

Founded by two French friends, Street Bakers is a company based in Chile. Their specialty is bread-making, and after years of perfecting it, they've succeeded in creating a unique recipe for all entrepreneurs in the restaurant industry.

The typefaces chosen for this branding are Brice, developed by Cahya Sofyan, which takes its inspiration from 1980s pop culture. The second typeface is Roboto Condensed, a free font designed by Christian Robertson in 2011. The handwriting font is Elena Genova’s Lumios Marker.

Stephenson Blake’s Romany is a turn-of-the-century design similar to Pretorian (Patent/Shanks) and DeVinne Ornamental (Stephenson Blake), but a good deal wider. With its soft, extending shapes, it’s a natural fit for the topic at hand.

The Bread Book was published by David & Charles in 1973. If its author is identical with American alternative health writer Carlson Wade, the recipes maybe should be taken with a grain of salt: according to Wikipedia, his ideas “on dieting and health were criticized by medical experts as quackery.”

From brand story to architecture and copy tone, British design company Wash Studio started by repositioning the Northern Dough Co. more confidently in the current marketplace.

Working with illustrators they focused on “great food, made together” using playful hands to bring the baking process to life. Rolling out across packaging, a shiny new website, social media launch campaign and advertising specs this project spans film, photography and animation.

For the logo and texts, the designers chose to work with Kent 4F, a woodtype-like design which imitates handwork on a rough surface. It was designed and released by 4th February Type Foundry (Sergiy Tkachenko). In the summer of 2023, the new design celebrated its fourth year in use.

Tous les Jours is a South Korean bakery franchise owned by CJ Foodville, a business group of CJ Group. Since 2019, the American branch uses Risotto Script on their packaging designs.

Angel Bakeries is a family-owned baking business which specialises in high quality pita bread. Its focus is to make bread without preservatives, artificial flavourings, and unnatural ingredients. Norbert Extended serves as a meaningful headline font for the look that transports the brand's artisanal focus perfectly. In the design by Awaken, Norbert is complemented by HK Grotesk for text and Sweet Sans for menu and footer.

Bread Ahead: The Expert Home Baker: A Masterclass in Classic Baking is the latest book by baker, entrepreneur and publisher Matthew Jones, “featuring over 90 fool-proof, classic baking recipes, discover the joy of baking like a professional but from the comfort of your own home kitchen”.

Art direction by Evi O. Studio. The book title is set in Voyage, and most copy uses Cako (both available from VJ-Type). Texts are set in GT Alpina from Grilli Type, with GT America Mono used for footnotes.

German chain Krome’s Backstube has been serving up baked goods since 1881, through four generations. Emphasizing their values of tradition, handmade quality, and fresh goods, the branding pairs Study, a warm, calligraphic, bookish serif with Canela Bark, a jaunty swashed script.

The bakery’s website was designed and coded by Exportarts in 2019, based on previously established branding.

If it couldn’t be a better ‘In Use’ for this, the Sourdough Factory logo uses a typeface aptly named Sourdough.

The Sourdough Factory was conceived by Henry Ng. It is a bakery wholesaler of different kinds of bread for use in various food & beverage outlets and ship chandlers. Ng also owns a bakery cafe, Bread & Hearth, that sells entrées, pastries and desserts for dine-in and delivery.

Created by Darrell Flood, Sourdough exists as an all-caps with a possibly faux italic counterpart. It possesses a digitally hand-drawn appearance with seemingly sensitive pen pressure, having an initially thin width and becoming very thick at the stroke terminal. The overall character set doesn't consistently sit on a single baseline, with the right stem of U extending way below it. The strokes of some glyphs also seem to start short, such as N and W.

While the logo exists as a standalone wordmark, the company’s tagline (“Artisan Bread Supply”) can be at times seen added beneath. It is styled in Trajan, with the font also being used as body text for their print collaterals.
