The updated direction, seen in issues Nº 31 to 37, balances contemporary elegance with the magazine’s bold editorial voice, unifying fashion, culture, and design through a sharper visual language and cohesive art direction.

As the main typeface, Maligne by Maxitype, a geometric sans inspired by 20th-century letter painters, serves both display and text roles, while OT Kairo by Omnitype provides a complementary serif counterpart.

The exhibition A History of Possible Encounters was conceived by Para Site and first shown in Hong Kong in 2012. It subsequently traveled to SALT Istanbul, NUS Museum Singapore, and e-flux New York. The catalog was designed by textandpictures and co-published with Sternberg Press in 2015. Proto Grotesk is used throughout. It’s paired with Monotype Baskerville for captions and obliqued Hobo for inline emphasis.

How did Ai Weiwei, Frog King Kwok, Tehching Hsieh and Martin Wong—four artists of Chinese heritage hailing from mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and San Francisco, respectively—all end up in New York in the heady 1980s? By considering them together, what might we learn about their practices and this storied time and place in art history? With these questions in mind, Taiping Tianguo: A History of Possible Encounters takes nuanced glimpses of the artists’ overlapping experiences, networks and friendships. Monopol is a German “magazine for art and life”. Since the makeover in May 2009, the covers feature Serifa Bold, several styles of Linotype Times, and, always in a fake sticker, Times Modern, the family’s elusive bold display cousin. The nameplate with the grotesque unicase is very likely custom.

Because of its heaviness and the delicate counters, Times Modern asks for a very tight spacing. This has not always been considered, as the cover of the current issue demonstrates.
