Lungomare Art, created as part of Rijeka 2020 – European Capital of Culture, was a cultural and tourist route along which art meets people. As a part of the project, 9 works of art have been planned in nine locations along the Kvarner coast. The visual identity reflects these meeting points (9N = nine works of art), while info boards were literally meeting points of different materials:. they are made from metal and glass in urban surroundings, and wood and glass in natural ones.

For Lungomare Art we really enjoyed co-creating with design studio Mikser and sculptor Tomica Grubiša. For the typography of the signs, Delvard Sans from Typotheque is used for headlines, while longer texts are set in Gräbenbach from Camelot.

Back in 2013, Marseille was designated as the European Capital of Culture, a label coveted by all European Union cities. A place of intense economic and cultural exchanges between the two shores of the Mediterranean, Marseille occupies a special place in France. The event reduced the distances in the territory, bringing Arles, Salon-de-Provence, Martigues, Aix-en-Provence, Aubagne, and Istres closer together. The partners were committed to creating a large scale, internationally renowned cultural event that promotes the cultural identities of the region through a dialogue between Europe and the Mediterranean. This project aimed to bring together all relevant stakeholders, producing lasting impacts on the cultural, economic, urban, and social aspects of the territory, with the goal of enhancing its international appeal and visibility.

Lyon-based graphic designer Thomas Serrière was in charge of creating the identity for the event. He worked on various mediums, from posters to badges, from signage to flyers, to cover the whole event.

The identity is based on a typographical system. I designed a complete visual language in order to provide the maximum versatility and expression across every channel, format or material. The typeface was developed with André Baldinger, adapting his BVH BDot in which we introduced little “diamonds”. The MP2013 logo itself consists of a very tiny hyphen, linking all the places, events, dates of the capital year.

The logo combines BVH BLine and FF DIN Round. Some applications additionally use FF DIN.

On the occasion of Mons 2015, European Capital of Culture, author and literary artist Karelle Ménine introduced an original project entitled La Phrase (“The Sentence”), which she wished to carry out with Ruedi Baur. To write, in the heart of the city of Mons (Belgium), a sentence 10 kilometers long, composed from a literary corpus by authors from Mons, Hainaut, Belgium, and from the whole world. Getting the words out of the books, giving them air and space, this long sentence shows the profusion and originality of literary works. It inscribes literature in urban territory and proposes a new literary space. All set in capital letters based on Garaje, it begins at Mons train station, welcomes visitors, takes them through the whole town and accompanies them back to the station ending in a final point. If one could see it from the sky, the sentence would form a strange figure of which each limb connectes to the Grand-Place in the city center, stretching out to the different neighborhoods. The words are applied to the walls and pavements, adjusting to porosity, to the size of bricks, to window frames and street corners. The project is a work in process that will last a whole year. A segment is painted every day by three sign painters along with their caravan. The sentence moves steadily forward, at its own rhythm of writing, from December 2014 to December 2015. On the walls, the sentence is written with ink on a special white tape and painted on the ground.

The project was presented in the book La Phrase, une expérience de poésie urbaine, issued in March 2016 (ed. Gallimard, col. Alternatives).

In every year a few Hungarian cities are applying for the European Capital of Culture title. This year Gödöllő was one of them, so they organized a design contest for the occasion.

Richárd Kelemen decided to create a discreet emblem by using the colors and format of the city’s coat of arms, combined with the image of the Royal Palace of Gödöllő. He designed the logo in three different sizes, defined by the length of the accompanying text.

The process of making Limerick European Capital of Culture 2020, the winner will be selected in mid 2016. The bid process is about widening access and participation in culture. Limerick is on a path of change and regeneration and this designation will represent a very desirable goal. Source: http://www.limerick2020.ie
