The dust jacket for Atheneum Books’ first edition of Philip Friedman’s Rage was designed by Paul Bacon in 1972. It uses Richard Isbell's Americana typeface with Helvetica.

The synopsis on the back is set in Times New Roman.

God Stalk (1982) and Dark of the Moon (1985) by P.C. Hodgell

The first two volumes from P.C. Hodgell’s Chronicles of the Kencyraths were published by Atheneum in their Argo Book imprint in 1982 and 1985, respectively. Both jacket designs feature Rustikalis Black, with ITC Zapf International for the author’s name. The paintings are by Michael Mariano. The book design is credited to Mary M. Ahern.

Rustikalis was issued by VGC sometime between 1973 and 1977. Its designer is unknown to me. The calligraphic display face shows traits of blackletter, see for example the H K and N with enlarged minuscule forms, the J with middle bar, the descending P and Y, the asymmetrical w, and other details. This, together with the 7 with crossbar and the spelling – Rustikalis with k – suggests to me that the designer might be from a German-speaking country, or at least was influenced by the local lettering tradition.

The Nightwalker – Atheneum book jacket

Prolific book jacket designer Lawrence Ratzkin was fond of blackletter type, as well as ITC Honda, Ronné Bonder and Tom Carnase’s 1970 “grayletter” with equal parts fraktur and roman sans serif.

Ratzkin used a couple alternates for this tight lockup, including a t that I would argue is much better than ITC Honda’s default version, and which tucks neatly into the adjacent w. The standard looped k is replaced with the alternate roman form.

Unfortunately, the current digital version of ITC Honda is missing all eight of the alternates available in the original phototype version. The sample below shows what this headline would look like in the digital font. You can see why the alt t really came in handy.

A gorgeous example of type arranged on a bouncing baseline, on H. Lawrence Hoffman’s dust jacket for the first book by Ernest J. Gaines, published by Atheneum Books in 1964.

The title typeface is Craw Clarendon by Freeman Craw. The author name is set in italics from Century Expanded.
