From Prince’s estate:

The messaging in this video links thematically to Prince’s past activist work in Baltimore in 2015 and the resulting riots that ensued in the city and beyond. That year, Prince released a protest song titled “Baltimore” – along with an accompanying documentary style video – directed squarely at the need for more compassion and peace, an ever-present theme he echoed through his career. The “Baltimore” video ends Prince’s quote “The system is broken. It’s going to take the young people to fix it this time. We need new ideas, new life…”., which Prince delivered during an impassioned speech at his 2015 Rally 4 Peace concert. This video begins with that same quote, a symbolic reminder underscoring Prince’s earlier messaging and a timely reflection on the need for positive change. Directed by filmmaker, Salomon Ligthelm through Stink Films, and shot in New York City, the video pays tribute to the scores of teens and children affected by gun-related violence every year in the USA.

Ten volumes have been released so far, each with a specific typographic treatment for the titles on the front cover.

Introduced to music by his father, a pianist, and his mother, a jazz singer, Prince was a precocious musician. A talented multi-instrumentalist, he landed a contract at the age of eighteen to become a songwriter, composer, performer and producer in his own right. A real workaholic, he quickly became a major musician and singer who turned the music industry upside down.

Fascinated by his charisma and his genius, Gerald Petit retraces the construction of this prodigious destiny and takes us along in the wake of this artist who never ceases to surpass himself and multiplies his wanderings between a public confirming his aura and a critic sceptical by dint of his unpredictability.

Gerald Petit offers a fine analysis of the strategy of conquest of this beast of the stage who, relentless businessman by day and creative machine by night, is constantly on the lookout and never misses an opportunity to perform.

Prince was published by Éditions Les Pérégrines in April 2022. Depending on the era, he had an amazing gift to transform and reinvent himself.

Pialat, by Commercial Type, was a typeface we had admired for a long time after first seeing it in the pages of the New York Times’ T Magazine. We decided it was perfect for this. The proportions of the letterforms, and the subtle flares channeled the 70s in our opinion, when Prince was first launching his career and influenced by Funk. The decadence of the thick-and-thin contrast spoke to Prince’s fascination with all things sensuous that he would then tap into over his entire career. Unfortunately Prince died before this book was published but we would hope he would have approved of this choice. For the body text we selected Gerard Unger’s Amerigo. The angular sharpness of the face, even at a small scale, to us channeled Prince from the 90s and some of the typography from the albums of that era. It’s such a robust and readable typeface despite its edgy characteristics and we always wanted an excuse to use it in a project.

Triboro. License: All Rights Reserved.

Triboro. License: All Rights Reserved.

Triboro. License: All Rights Reserved.

Triboro. License: All Rights Reserved.

Triboro. License: All Rights Reserved.

This post was originally published at Fonts In Use

The single was released in Germany with the above single sleeve in 1983 along with the B-side “All The Critics Love U In New York”.

Prince's name looks to be set in Extrabold Russell Square by John Russell, originally released by VGC in 1973. A-side title is set in all-caps Futura.

This post was originally published at Fonts In Use

He was 19 years old upon its release. The album received a mixed critical response and was seen as a commercial failure. The self-titled Prince (1979) would prove to be much more successful.
