Dutch sticker from around 1980, advertising “Stabil Oil for active motors”, using Letraset’s adaptation of Dynamo (1930). The letter I was sliced, turning its semi-seriffed top into a dot.

Exide Industries Limited is India’s largest selling battery company. Their logo features distinct, bold red typography with an integrated blue circular emblem enclosing a white lightning bolt, which represents electrical energy and battery power. This logo is using the Dynamo typeface, which has those fancy serifs, but totally a geometric sans font.

The logo was introduced in August 1995 when Chloride Industries Limited was renamed as Exide Industries Limited.

Amenophis were a German prog band who in 1983 released their only album in the original line-up. Unlike the rise of neo-prog at the time, this is pure symphonic prog.

The LP was released privately in an edition that cannot have been more than a few thousand copies. It was released on CD in the 1990s.

Besides loving the music, I’ve always loved the lettering of the band name. A bit bold, bit still rounded and not too harsh, the different top and bottom serifs on the S. The slight bend in the N or the P make it almost friendly. The typeface is Letraset’s Bramley.

Hubert Fischer is credited with the cover design, but I feel that is more about the artwork than the lettering. Rosalia Vollmuth (most likely related to bass player Wolfgang Vollmuth) is credited for the idea for the illustration (“Illustrationsidee” in German).

Issue no. 2 from July 1981. The white text at the bottom is an unidentified typeface similar to Futura Extra Bold Condensed. I wonder if it’s related to Heraldus. [edit: identified by Bryson as Tempo Black Condensed]

Motter Tektura is the logo typeface for Your Computer. The Australian monthly home computing magazine “for business and pleasure” ran from May/June 1981 to May/June 1997. From 1977 to 1984, Othmar Motter’s typeface was also used for the logo of the Apple Computer Inc., likewise in all-lowercase letters.

Initially edited by Les Bell and published by the White House Publishing Group under licence from Motorword Pty Ltd., Your Computer was typeset by Hughes Phototype, Mosman. and printed by The Lithgo Centre, Waterloo. Barry Brady served as the magazine’s first art director. In 1982, he was superseded by Michelle Mabbott. Rolf Hagenmaier filled this role in 1993.

By 1994, the logo had been redrawn (almost) beyond recognition.

Friseurteam Iris is a hair salon on Grünberger Straße in Berlin’s Friedrichshain quarter. The sign above the graffiti-covered shopfront combines a bichromatic all-caps setting of Cabaret (Letraset, 1980) with Vivaldi (VGC, 1966). The words “New Style” on the window are in a different script: it’s Ex Ponto (Adobe, 1994)

This second issue of Mushroom People magazine, published by Broccoli, features “astromycologists, academics, architects, pharmacists, foragers, fashion designers, home cooks, shopkeepers, composers, and poets all inspired by the many radical ways of being fungi embody.”

Exploring the topics of “creation, destruction, attraction, and revulsion”, each chapter is printed on a different paper and uses a different set of typefaces.

The nameplate is set in all-caps Bradley DJR, and most body copy is set in ABC Marist and Calibre.

“Habitats for humanity” is set in Charlottenburg.

“Destuct” is set in Respira Black, “Two” uses Michaux and the small type is Calibre.

“Spores” uses ABC Asfalt.

“What” and “Lurks” are both set in typefaces from Dinamo: ABC Laica and ABC Maxi Round.

The text on this page is set in three columns of pink Certeau, with the headline added in Cancellaresca Script, partly arranged on a curve. The drop cap appears to be custom.

These imaginatively rendered title cards were a high point of each Batman episode. While some (like “Harley’s Holiday” and “Time out of Joint”) were character portraits, most often the cards depicted an emotional impression of the given episode’s theme. According to Eric Radomski, who designed many of the cards, “Going with the overall retro-forties feel we were giving the show, we wanted to treat the episodes as mini-movies. The title cards allowed us to create great drama in a very subtle fashion. It was a process of trying to capture what the overall episode was, and not just show a scene or moment from it.”

Most of the title cards of Batman: The Animated Series’ first season (which first aired in 1992–1993) use fonts that were available from Letraset.

On our way from the parking to the cliffs of Beuzec-Cap-Sizun, Bretagne, we passed workers dismantling a stage from a festival that ended the previous day plus a sign explaining what we had just missed. Fête de Bruyères (“Heather festival”) is a local folk festival with dance and music held every second Sunday in August. The billboard shows a man in folk costume playing bagpipe and women in traditional clothing riding a horse carriage, with the côte sauvage (“wild coast”) as a backdrop. The airbrushed image is partly covered with vinyl lettering, using a different font for each line. It is signed by local sign firm Le Bars Publicité in the bottom left corner, but not dated.

River Raid is a 1982 shoot ’em up video game developed and published by Activision for the Atari 2600, designed by Carol Shaw. […] River Raid was the top-selling Activision game of 1983 and the second best-selling game for the Atari 2600 in 1983, only being beaten by Ms. Pac-Man. Shaw responded to the sales stating “I knew it was a good game, but I didn’t expect to hit number one. Of course I was happy when it did!” The Atari version sold almost one million copy in total by 1984, making it one of the best-selling video game at that point.

The headline typeface in this ad from a 1984 issue of the British Crash magazine is Conference. The bold spurless sans with the characteristic pointed e was designed by Martin Wait and released by Letraset in 1978. Despite being available in digital form, it hasn’t come up on Fonts In Use before.

A bicolor application of Letraset’s Plaza Inline, paired with Flash Bold on an angle, for the sleeve to Mike Krüger’s 1980 single “Der Nippel”. The comedy schlager that pokes fun at nonsensical user manuals and operating instructions was a #1 hit in Germany and Austria. The song is taken from an album of the same title (and with the same cover design) that was performed live at Saalbau Witten in January 1980, recorded and mixed by Conny Plank.

Class Photo Bordermania

Two display typefaces, Algerian and Ravie, both in use for an official class photo of a freshman section in the school year 2009–2010 in provincial Philippines.

Filipino graphic designers and layout artists never shy away from combining two typefaces, oftentimes working with available resources at hand–in this case, typefaces that come bundled with Microsoft Windows. You know what they say: the more the manyer.

Perfect Blue (パーフェクトブルー) is a 1997 Japanese animated psychological thriller directed by Satoshi Kon. The movie poster shown above features the title in shaded and reversed Plaza. The tagline “excuse me … who are you?” is in OCR-A. Other fonts used on it include Tube, Times New Roman, and Gill Sans. The Blu-ray/DVD cover shown below uses Trajan.

Dimension 20: A Court of Fey & Flowers is the 15th season of the tabletop role-playing game show produced by and broadcast on Dropout TV. DM’d by Aabriya Iyengar, this season follows the politics and relationships of six archfey from various faerie courts as they prepare for and attend a social event known as the Bloom.

A Court of Fey & Flowers the font Vatican for its title, opening credits, and character information, and this particular season uses Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition for its game system.

Disco Jazz is an album by Indian singer Rupa Biswas.

It was recorded in 1981 at The Living Room Studios in Calgary (Alberta, Canada) and originally released in 1982 by Megaphone in Calcutta. The album was reissued in 2019 by the Numero Group.

Chesterfield is used in all caps for both the artist’s name and the title on the album cover.

Weatherlight is an expansion card set of the playable card game Magic: The Gathering. Weatherlight was released in June of 1997, and was the eleventh expansion set released for the card game.

Shown here are a variety of card packs, boxes, and print advertisements. Above you will see two packs of magic cards.

The logo for Weatherlight is set in Liefendre, a calligraphic typeface designed by Jim Marcus and released by T-26 just a year earlier. The logo uses the alternative W glyph.

The Magic: The Gathering logo combines custom lettering for “Magic” [based on Quadrata II, see comments] with Belwe for “The Gathering”. The print ads below use a combination of Liefendre and ITC Legacy Sans.

The Canon Typestar used Letraset’s Bramley (1980) as the logo typeface, with the letter a replaced by a star.

The Typestar was Canon’s series of compact personal electronic typewiters. The portable, optionally battery-powered word processor was described as a cross between a notebook computer and a typewriter. In 1985, Canon advertised it as follows:

This is the debut studio album by the Japanese fusion band Kangaroo. They would only release four albums before splitting up in 1986. At the front cover, the typeface used for the album title is Boul Mich, while the band's name/logo is set in Plaza Inline.

At the back cover, the title tracks are set in Futura, while the music personnel is set in an italic variant of Helvetica. Lastly, the Japanese sans serif typeface at the bottom uses Ishii Gothic (石井ゴシック) by Shaken.

Giulia Julss is an aesthetician who decided to open her own beauty salon in 2023. Her dream has always been to create a place where people can feel at home, take care of their bodies, and relax. This is how Giuly Julss – Un momento per te (“A Moment for You”) was born. The project was conceived by combining visual elements in a way that might seem inconsistent at first glance; in fact, the real goal was to create a cohesive style suited to a local, personal business without disrupting the surrounding context.

We used a combination of four fonts— Apfel Grotezk, Park Lane, Pinyon Script, and Molle—to further enhance this balance. Specifically, we chose a refined aesthetic (cooler colors, more formal fonts) for the first customer touchpoints, such as gift vouchers and business cards, while opting for a warmer, more informal, and spontaneous style (warmer colors, friendlier fonts) for touchpoints experienced within the salon itself. The logo is custom drawn.
