Tender is an ongoing project initiated by A Published Event and supported by Public Office. The website hosts a collection of collaborative and experimental forms of writing, with numerous footnotes and cross-references. It was designed by Melbourne-based graphic designer Paul Mylecharane, who describes it as a “project about time and relations unfolding; and working through a multiplicity of ideas about self-publishing, writing and making with.” It features work by writers such as Margaret Woodward, Justy Phillips, Catherine Rose Evans, Ilana Halperin, Jen Bervin and Wendy Morrow.

The book was published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux in April 2023. Picador’s paperback edition is scheduled for April 2024. The jacket design is by Grace Han, with art direction by Na Kim. Gretchen Achilles designed the book’s interior.

Mark Sinclair included Han’s work in his “Book covers designs of the year 2023” for Creative Review, and comments:

Single-colour book covers are rare and I’ve not come across one that takes the blue palette of cyanotypes and employs it across both illustration and typography. Everything is stretched, too, while the overall aesthetic feels indebted to early New Directions paperbacks. Grace Han’s intriguing cover does an awful lot with very little.

The explicit oblongness is indeed an eye-catcher. For a second I was tempted to find typographic meaning in the weeds illustration, too: the dense pattern of blue and white with an occasional diagonal is reminiscient of extremely elongated typeface designs.

I previously hadn’t paid close attention the more condensed styles of Etna. Mark Simonson’s design is inspired by the Aetna wood type style of the late nineteenth century, which also was produced in various widths. The font in use is Etna XX Condensed Light, the narrowest out of thirty styles in the family. It’s similar in feel to Joy Redick’s Willow, which is even narrower, and also based on wood type, namely a Clarendon. Etna is distinguished by its flared strokes, among other things.

Etna is also used on the title page, paired with Fournier.

Paperback edition, Picador, scheduled for April 2024. It looks like the designer of the adaptation wanted to match the typeface used for “Author of The Everlasting” for the added blurb, but only came close: it’s ITC American Typewriter, not FF Elementa.

“Pop-Kultur” is an international festival, held from August 21st to 23rd in 2019 at Kulturbrauerei in Berlin. The first edition happened at the Berghain in 2015, the second one in the district of Neukölln in 2016. Pop-Kultur is based on three elemental foundations:

On all posters, fertig design cooks up the exact same recipe with two variables. For every poster, a different stunning space photograph is selected with a supernova, galaxy, star, or nebula as captured by the Hubble telescope, courtesy of ESA/NASA; The name of every act is set in center-aligned and skewed Le Murmure with information in Suisse Int’l Mono. The Pop-Kultur logo seems to be made with Neue Helvetica, with a K from Fette Fraktur and the year in oldstyle figures from FF Elementa, which is also used for the Pop-Kultur website

A vintage-style packaging for the German salt brand Bad Reichenhaller by Südwestdeutsche Salzwerke AG. The subbrand Alpensaline uses Wood Bonnet Antique No.7 by astype fonts.

Graphic design and branding for RRUUMMOOOREEE (or in english: NNOOIISSSEEE). A celebration of noise and experimental music, with an evening of live concerts and a DIY musical instrument (daxophone) workshop at Cascina Torchiera – one of the oldest squats in Milan.

O Street worked with craft brewery BrewDog; best known for their beers and big attitude but also a growing hospitality presence throughout the United Kingdom, to create a distinctive menu design and system for over fifty of their bars. This included a full menu which features a handmade backboard, and a Daily Drafts menu, individually finished at each location, and share a typographical contrast of Veneer and FF Elementa.

Visual identity designed for, Paradise City, USA, a contemporary menswear collection based in southern California.

The design for the Paradise City logo took inspiration from international maritime signal flags. The emblem comprises the P and C (“Papa” and “Charlie”) flags, merged together into one solid logoform.

Art prints, labels, totes and more, designed for The Provincial Trading Co, a fictional apothecary and supply shop from the rugged North (and further parts unknown). The designs were a chance to revel in a bit of tongue-in-cheek revisionist history with a macabre twist.
