Over its 130 years in commercial real estate, Al. Neyer had evolved from a local, family-owned construction business into a national, employee-owned, vertically-integrated development company. But their name, brand, and website were stuck in the past. They needed a new identity and messaging that matched the progressive, multifaceted major player they had become in order to continue to attract the best talent, clients, and partners—all while honoring their 130 years of experience and brand equity.

Lexicon led the creation of a new name for the firm: Merus, a combination for “merit” and “us,” better reflects the modern state of the business. One Design developed new brand positioning, visual and verbal identity, communication strategy, website, and a brand launch campaign to tell the right story and set their teams up for success as they rolled out their new brand across the country.

Rois from New Letters forms the foundation for the Merus wordmark, bringing warmth and humanity to the new company name. Brut Grotesque from Bureau Brut was leveraged as a workhorse brand type system, to maximize a sense of strength, stability, clarity, and rigur.

First launched in 2011, Mindsparkle Mag is an online magazine and a platform for promoting projects in the fields of design, web design, and video. As of 2024 (and since 2016), the typeface family used for the website is Tilde (2015) by New Letters.

Kenshō Agency's identity for Solar Labs utilises a modification of Laif (New Letters) for the brand logotype, alongside extensive use of both HK Grotesk (Hanken Design Co) and Georgia Pro (Carter & Cone) throughout brand deliverables and communications.

Solar Labs' mission is to bring innovative web3 ideas to life, both for self initiated projects and client led briefs alike. The company strives to be as transparent as possible; providing secure and reliable solutions for web and product development, smart contracts and KYC services.

The visitor's guide to the exhibition Vision und Schrecken der Moderne for the Friedrich Engels Year 2020 exhibition at the Von der Heydt Museum Wuppertal was typeset in Rasmus and Mint Grotesk.

In winter 2017/18 we were asked to participate in the collective transformation process of the various cultural centers operated by the city of Hanover. In a number of workshops, initiated and accompanied by Identitätsstiftung, the group’s aim was to face and master the challenges of digitalization and generational change as a cultural institution. Together with the initiators we created a five parts publication named Funkenflug – Stadtteilkultur im Wandel (“Flying sparks – urban district culture in transition”). It consists of a box with booklets, including a collection of illustrations and an atmospheric photographic essay, and can be read as a project documentation and used as an interactive toolbox.

Mériva and Mériva Extra are used throughout.

The project won an iF Award in 2020, and a Silver Medal in the DDC “Gute Gestaltung” 2019.

Wohnfühl Immobilien is a real estate firm in Leipzig, Germany known for a dynamic, service-oriented and international outlook on the market in their home base. Due to the tenth anniversary of the firm, the identity was redefined to make these core values visible to the audience. As a smaller firm, the main obstacles were to differentiate it from the competitors as well as establishing an environment that allows quick movement when chances are offered. The brick graphics allow just that. Blending in with the word mark they allow playful and loud applications as much as addressing serious matters on the business side.

Tilde is used throughout, paired with Europa on the website. Typold is used for the company’s logo.

The Spring 2020 issue of Max marks the return of the iconic magazine that was first launched in Italy in 1985. From their website:

The MAX is back! We are delighted to present the first global issue of MAX Magazine. [Its] return fits perfectly with our time’s fascination for retro-chic with a fresh new vision, transformed look and sheer creativity.

The first issue of MAX offers spectacular photography and a wide range of topics – exclusive interviews and photo editorials with amazing actresses Noomi Rapace, Katheryn Winnick and Paola Nuñez. MAX focuses on legendary photographer Peter Lindbergh, lets you explore magnificent art and architecture, gives you tips for places offering relaxation for body and mind, and much more.

The typography pairs Flecha from R-Typography with Rainer and Arnold (both by Rüdiger) and Rois (New Letters).

Leeds based design studio Passport creates the identity and supporting print & digital materials for the Vagina Museum in London; “the world’s first bricks and mortar museum dedicated to vaginas, vulvas and the gynaecological anatomy.” From Passport’s website:

We [supplied] seven different typefaces with a variety of personalities, which could be mixed and matched to create different aesthetics as well as distinct tones of voice. We maintained brand consistency by always using black on coloured backgrounds.

The Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz (“German State Philharmonic Orchestra Rhineland-Palatinate”) is the largest and most important orchestra in the state, based in Ludwigshafen. It is considered the symphony orchestra of the Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region with a diverse musical spectrum: this ranges from the great symphonic music to music theater productions to film music projects. This year, the Staatsphilharmonie celebrates its 100th anniversary. For the jubilee season 2019/2020, Michael Francis will be the chief conductor.

The typography uses various weights of Moderat, paired with all caps Mériva Extra for headlines.

Addendum is an Austrian print magazine published by QuoVadisVeritas (QVV). QVV is a media and research platform, financed by Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateschitz.

The magazine’s layout was developed by the New York-based agency Sagmeister & Walsh. Title and headlines are set in the characteristic font Larish Alte. Sagmeister and Larish Alte have both Austrian origins. The Vorarlbergian Sagmeister started his career in Vienna. Larish Alte is a renewal of Plinius, a typeface developed in the early 20th century by the Viennese calligrapher and designer Rudolf von Larisch.

On the inside, the magazine shows two very different fonts: The sans serif Mériva is a rather new, affordable, and relatively unknown font and comes with headstrong details which pay tribute to the early grotesque typefaces of the 19th century. The serif Lexicon No. 2 is a classic, exclusive, world-famous font, and a role model of Dutch type design. The layout uses these two fonts to differentiate between special issue (Mériva) and general content (Lexicon).

Streetart artist Sweetuno developed a “Modern Times” lettering. Modern Times is a concert series with emphasis on early 20th century music. The magazine is not monothematic and is published four times a year.

Unrealized rebranding proposal for Les Merveilles de la Mer (The Wonders of the Sea), a maritime museum in Beirut, Lebanon that displays a vast range of aquatic animals, historical diving and sailing equipment.

The logotype is set in Minérale by 205TF. Seen from a distance, the breaks in the typeface make the logo look distorted by refracting light and the letters seem to be immersed in the sea, setting an underwater feel. This impression is reinforced by the use Kanit by Cadson Demak, a typeface with support for Thai and Latin scripts. The organic curves in the font mirror a seahorse’s tail or an undulating seaweed.

The museum’s signage is based on Minérale’s extensive glyph set. Several shapes have been used to create symbols that allude to the gallery’s contents: the diamond shape – a grain of salt – indicates the saltwater aquariums; the semicircles point to the invertebrate display.

A template has been created for the temporary exhibition’s posters. Each would have its title set in a typeface matching its theme. For instance, the eerie blackletter Respira Black (slighty modified) by Sharp Type introduces the collection of immortal and deadly jellyfish, whereas the organic stencil Saint George by Triple Double Type is used to promote coral reef aquariums. Rasmus by New Letters appears for an exhibition about poisonous fish.

It is worth mentioning that red and yellow are rare in the palette as these colors are invisible in deep waters.

Gut is an agency based in Miami and Buenos Aires. Sagmeister & Walsh created an abstract spiral logo animation inspired by gut intestines.

Typefaces: Mériva and Mineral

Studying photography, and then what? Julia Sellmann is drawn to independence and freelance work. Already during her studies, the young photographer started to publish her works, among others, in SZ Magazin. Parallel to her Masters degree, Julia is starting her career as a freelance photographer. She joint forces with the Dortmund-based design studio KoeperHerfurth and created a visual identity which lets her work breathe, harmonizes with it and supports it.

Julia Sellmann takes pictures to tell stories. It is exactly this aspiration, that can also be found in the newly designed website. Not a blunt showing of pictures, but a website that is inspired by an editorial-style telling of stories. Galleries of various lengths, pairs of photographs and text-picture combinations tell the stories behind the individual photographs. Deduced from her work, the system of colors subdivides the contents, indifferent to being a report about mass weddings in South Korea or portraits of Charlotte Roche for Vice Magazine.

Julia’s subtle photography receives a suitable framework. The broad typography, as well as the system of colors, reappears in the printed papers of the photographer. The typographic system that is reduced yet infused with tough character, combined with colorful backgrounds, shows the peculiarities of Julia Sellmann. Letterheads and business cards are printed with variable fronts and backs. Variety in a row.
