The fifth edition of Colligo Festival took place in the former Cinema Sidion in Gravina, Puglia, a cultural venue brought back to life to host music and contemporary arts.

With Sangria Creative Studio as a media partner for the second time, a visual identity was developed around the theme of transformation. The visual direction interprets change through fluid, layered illustrations without rigid contours, deliberately left undefined to express evolving identities. The color palette follows the same logic. Blue evokes movement and depth, pink suggests experimentation, and red conveys urgency and intensity. Together, they create a vibrant chromatic language that refuses neutrality.

The typeface Hagrid by Zetafonts plays a crucial role. It was chosen for its strong presence and its ability to support the conceptual direction. Its bold, contemporary and variable forms communicate both solidity and versatility, qualities that reflect the festival’s character and its ongoing metamorphosis. Hagrid becomes a defining element that gives structure to the entire graphic system. The accompanying brush typeface is Bitterbrush by Hanoded.

The poster, the core of the visual project, acts as a manifesto of the festival and its commitment to revitalizing cultural spaces and engaging new generations. Alongside the visual identity, the concept and storytelling were defined so that every graphic and narrative layer communicates a single idea. Transformation as a continuous condition.

Cover art of the Mono Mind album Mind Control

Mono Mind – yet another side project of Per Gessle – have released one album and seven singles. They all feature designs that follow almost a cookie-cutter template, with coarsely halftoned images of the band characters on random backgrounds in bright colours. The band's name has always been set in David Kerkhoff’s Dirrrty, with the release title in Bureau Grot Medium Compressed. The sole exception to this is the album which has its title set in Akzidenz-Grotesk Extended. From the third single onwards, the single titles have been mechanically skewed 15° to create a faux italic.

Zilok Roams Yosemite is a children’s book written by Lee Peglow and PJ McCabe, and illustrated by Jamie Kwok Sitt. It tells the story of an alien stranded in Yosemite National Park. From the illustrator’s website:

After an unexpected crash-landing in Yosemite, Zilok needs to climb to the top of Half Dome to send a signal home. Along the way he receives some help from the incredible creatures of the forest!

The cover combines Pigeon Post for the title with Fictional for the author and illustrator credits. For the book’s interior text and the back cover, P22 Mackinac is used.

When going out cycling north of Rotterdam I often pass by this little restaurant that also happens to use a personal favourite among typefaces: Museo by Jos Buivenga / exljbris in the logo. It seems to be accompanied by Museo Sans in their signage.

“Welkom!” is added in Sensory Overload, and “123” from an unidentified sans.

All-lowercase Jane Austen for the “Westend Flows” single, May 2022

BIMI, an emerging rapper from Finland, embodies a unique sound of the classic 2000s rap era. In recent years, we did the art direction and designed the cover art for BIMI, experimenting with diverse typographic styles.

For the initial covers of his tracks “Westend Flows” and “Versace Mamis,” we opted for a handwritten aesthetic, which perfectly complemented the nostalgic vibes reminiscent of 2000s rap and R&B. For the Balaclava Mixtape EP, we strived to transform Nefarious into a captivating title that evokes the essence of both horror and gangsta rap, creating a cinematic experience for the listener.

The cover art for “Westend Flows” juxtaposes the suburban lifestyle with the opulent Westend, an affluent residential area near Helsinki, Finland. By contrasting these two worlds, BIMI’s music encapsulates the aspirations and realities of different societal spheres.

On the other hand, the cover art for “Versace Mamis” draws inspiration from Antonio Canova’s renowned sculpture, The Three Graces. This artistic choice represents the timeless allure and elegance of BIMI’s R&B side, harmonizing the rap part into it.

Moreover, when it came to designing the cover for “DMX,” we deliberately delved into the raw essence of hardcore rap, reminiscent of DMX’s iconic style. The cover exudes a sense of grit and intensity, akin to DMX’s way of incorporating aggressive dog imagery in his visuals and music videos.

Through our art direction, we aim to capture the essence of BIMI’s music, blending nostalgia with modernity, and paying homage to the influential rap icons.

In the graphic novel Copy Shop, Julie works full time in a Berlin copy store, and she likes doing it. Her boss is unusually nice, and the pay is surprisingly okay. Ro also works here. He is a student and needs the part-time job. He can’t believe that Julie likes the store: in addition to boredom, there are fine particles in every corner. But Ro realizes that it’s not easy for him to talk to Julie.

Larousse Jeunesse invited me to design the logotype for P’tit Sherlock (“Little Sherlock”), a French book series for children written by Pascal Prévot, for which I also provided the illustration. I’ve used my own Balter Serif for that. The book covers were designed in-house at Larousse Jeunesse, and additionally use Beanstalker and ITC American Typewriter.

Peter Pauper Press published an English translation titled Little Sherlock. It uses the same design and typefaces.

Ding is used for the YouTube channel of starlets Vlad and Niki in the logo and on merchandise T-shirts. On merchandise, Ding is paired with Canoodle.

Franziska Neubert used David Kerkhoff’s Rotorua (Hanoded, 2014) for the cover of Der eiserne Gustav (“Iron Gustav”).

In this novel, Hans Fallada depicts the German society after the First World War, life in the Weimar Republic, and the challenges of modernity. First published in 1938, it’s named after the coachman Gustav Hartmann (1859–1938) from Berlin. In 1928, he drove his horse-drawn carriage all the way to Paris. It took him two months to get there. Accompanied by a newspaper reporter, this trip was supposed to be an act of protest against the decline of the cab trade and the increasing number of automobiles. Goebbels urged the author to change the ending, bringing it into line with the Nazis’ expectations. This new edition by Büchergilde Gutenberg claims to be the first to match Fallada’s original intention.
